Twilight Gets a Puppy

Winter Woof Up,
Part 2
[ At a more reasonable time of morning. ]
Twilight galloped towards the town hall with a still sleepy Spike clinging to her back and Rahs loping along beside her.
“How could you let me fall back asleep?! We're going to be tardy!” Twilight yelled.
“Woof?” Rahs questioned.
“Yeah seriously, the whole town knows how you are with crowds, I’m pretty sure none of them expect you to be here at all.” Spike grumbled.
“I'm getting better.” Twilight fussed as she spotted the crowd ahead of them and slowed down a bit .
“Yeah, but look at that crowd … it's huge, must be everypony in Ponyville. No one's seen you yet you can easily slip away.” Spike muttered.
Twilight came to a stop her ears flattening to her head before she gritted her teeth. “ No, I'm going to do this and it will be the best thing ever!”
Spike blinked then slapped his forehead with a claw. “Crap I pushed her too far and into stubborn mode.”
Rahs rolled his eyes and gave his little brother a shove launching him off Twilight's back and into a snow drift.
“Woof!”
“You can't blame me for trying to get her to go home.” Spike protested.
“Bork!”
“Okay okay you can blame me for trying to do that by making her freak out.” Spike admitted digging himself out of the snow bank before joining the other three walking towards the crowd.
“Those must be the vests Rarity designed. Blue for the weather team, tan for the animal team and green for the plant team.” Twilight smiled ignoring her brothers bickering.
“I'll take a blue vest, the color of my blanket which I hear calling my name.” Spike yawned.” Spike..... Spike.... come to bed.... it's too early.....”
“Spike! There yah are!”
“Huh?” Spike blinks before a heavily bundled Applebloom runs up and starts pushing him across the snow covered ground away from the crowd.
“Come on, Sweetiebelle has a plan how we ken git our snow removal cutiemarks.”Applebloom cheered pushing Spike along, the little dragon's feet gaining no traction on the snow.
“Hey, wait, what!?” Spike protested.
Twilight and several other who had heard Applebloom's shout watched as the pair went down the street towards the hoof ball field.
“Mayor did we re-insure the park?” a voice finally called up to the stage from the crowd.
“I'm sure it will be fine...” Mayor Mare stated as a loud boom filled the air.
Nearly as one the crowd of ponies all pulled out and opened an umbrella, save Twilight who ducked under Rahs' coat.
A moment later at least four inches of snow was suddenly dumped over the area around town hall.
“Oops” was heard off in the distance.
Twilight slipped back out from under her brothers coat as the annoyed Moon Dog worked on getting all the snow off his head.
“To answer your question yes.” The mayor stated closing her umbrella.” Will some pony from the weather team go and check to see if they are alright and assess the damage please. Now then I would like to thank every pony for being here bright and early. We need every single pony to ensure that winter is properly wrapped up this year. Now you all have your vests and teams, so lets do even better than last year and have the quickest winter wrap up ever.”
“Oh wow... where do we go? I mean where would we even fit in? What does every pony even do?” Twilight muttered as the others move towards their group leaders.
“Woof.” Rahs smirked pointing upward.
“Yes well I suppose it's kind of obvious that we are not going to be aiding the weather team.” Twilight considered.” I'm not ready to try that flying spell out yet.”
Rahs' ears perked up as the first notes of music fill the air.
“Woof?” Rahs questioned
[I think you all know the song by now]
Rahs stands there clapping loudly at the sudden song and even Twilight’s musings played into it without breaking the rhythm.
“ Bark” Rahs nodded fairly impressed but confused at the same time.
“Oh.. we've been practicing for weeks at the town hall, didn't you see the fliers?” Pinkie Pie popped up offering a flier to Rahs before she pronked off. The flier showed the times and planning for the Winter Wrap up song practice.
Rahs blinked looking at Twilight who simply shrugged.
“Really with how this town is I should have expected that. Now lets see what team we're on.” Twilight smiled.
“You're making birds nests?” Twilight tilted her head. “ Don't the birds do that naturally?”
“Yes darling but these nests are special.” Rarity smiled showing off a well woven nest with several ribbons in it that were sitting on the table before her. The fashion-eta had made a few nest and each one was quite pretty.
“ Well it is pretty but how's it special?” Twilight questioned.
“Simply put darling, Fluttershy asked some birds one year what they would like to get them to come back the following year. Quite a number of them wanted pretty nests in order to attract mates with more ease. So for the past few years some of us have been working on the nests like this. It has proven to do wonders and the amount of beautiful birds that come to nest near Ponyville has increased dramatically. While this task isn't priority, it's important enough that at least one pony has been put on this duty for the past few years.” Rarity explained.”Usually I am selected for my artistic flair.”
“And tha fact if she does anything else she whines about tha mud.” Applejack called as she walked past with the rest of her team getting a glare from Rarity.
“Wow... that makes more sense than I thought it would.” Twilight admits.
“Would you two like to give it a try?” Rarity asked.” I was hoping Sweetiebelle and her friends would help this year, but if I’m not mistaken they are trying for … different cutie marks.”
Rahs simply shrugged and took a seat on the bench as Twilight hopped up next to him.
“Now then Take some straw twigs and ribbon from that basket.....” Rarity blinked as Rahs simply dumped the whole thing in front of him where Twilight had in a matter of seconds organized the sticks straw and ribbon by different colors, sizes, and, thickness. “ Now just stake a little bit of straw and bend it a little, then a stick to hold it .. oh dear no a little less straw Rahs, wait no less sticks, Twilight not that way.....”
Rarity trailed off watching the pair work for a moment more before she had to look away.
Twilight had made..... well something. It might have been a nest though the lopsided monstrosity had twigs and ribbon sticking out of it ad odd angles and Rarity was not even sure how it had been possible. Nor was she sure how it acted more like a liquid as it sloshed about when all that it was made of was sticks and straw.
Rahs on the other hoof had made a perfectly serviceable straw hat. The Moon Dog looked as confused at his result as the others did. With a sigh he simply flipped it over and showed it could be used as a nest still , with a wide landing pad.
“There! And it looks just like yours Rarity.......... or not.” Twilight sighed then looked at Rahs.” How did you make a hat?”
“Well umm I suppose that's not bad Twilight. It needs a bit of work.” Rarity placated.” Perhaps the birds could use it as a umm....”
“An outhouse?”
“Yes, I mean no, I mean what?” Rarity blinked as she noticed Twilight was glaring at her brother who had an evil grin on his face.
“Right clearly I am not cut out for this sort of thing.” Twilight grumbled grabbing the nest and flinging it off into the trees.” I'll see what Pinkie's doing. Let's go you overgrown hairball.”
Rahs waved goodbye to Rarity leaving her standing there confused still looking down at the hat and then off into the woods where Twilight had flung the abomination.
“Did Rahs just speak?” Rarity stammered.
