Sly Cooper: Family of Thieves

Interlude: Aftermath

After defeating Clockwerk, and securing his fragment of the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly insisted on taking Derpy to a hospital, one that catered to both sides of the law, as the doctors didn't tend to care which side their patients were on and he couldn't take his sister to a hospital that would turn them over to Carmelita and her buddies. There wasn't much he could do in this situation, as no one in the van really had any medical experience, save for the little that Bentley had used to help Derpy when she was wounded, so they needed an actual doctor to see what the extent of Clockwerk's final act was. As he thought about that he turned towards the back of the van, where Gilda was sitting next to Derpy and was carefully tending to the cuts that had been carved into her face, as one thing that Clockwerk took was their sister's right eye. Derpy, on the other hand, was resting as Murray drove the van away from the volcano that they had fought the terrible leader of the Fiendish Five at, putting as much distance as they could between them and that place.

It also gave him the chance to think about what Mz. Ruby had told his sisters back when they fought her in Haiti, as the voodoo priestess had said that both Gilda and Derpy had powers of their own and that they needed to experience some sort of event to trigger the awakening of their abilities. Sly had no idea that Clockwerk would have been the key to his sisters gaining their abilities, nor did he have any idea that Gilda's power was over the wind itself and Derpy appeared to channel the power of the storm itself. After fighting the Panda King, who appeared to use something that was akin to the magic that Mz. Ruby, Gilda, and even Derpy used, he had to admit that there was definitely magic in this world and that his sisters were bearers of that power. This was a lot to take in and he could tell that he wasn't the only one thinking about it, as Murray occasionally glanced back at Gilda and Derpy while he was driving and Bentley was making notes on how Sly's sisters might have acquired the power they now commanded... and Sly was sure that Carmelita was likely thinking about what she had seen earlier, which was what he was doing.

Gilda had slammed her fist into Clockwerk's metal face and left a dent in it, despite the fact that they had no idea what sort of metal his body had been made out of, and Derpy had summoned a bolt of lightning that stalled Clockwerk where he was flying, giving him the time to destroy the enemy of the Cooper Clan... but he was fortunate that he hadn't lost either of his sisters in the process, otherwise he would have vented so much more anger out on the metallic body they had torn to pieces.

"The bleeding's stopped," Gilda said, to which she sighed as she leaned back in her seat, as she insisted on sitting near Derpy for a few hours before she switched with either Bentley or Sly, before she collected the bloody tissues and similar items and stuffed them into an empty trash can, "and I put a small towel over her eye, just in case one of those cuts decides to open while we're heading back to civilization. At least Derpy's sleeping at the moment... I can't imagine the pain she's in, of having one of her eyes damaged in such a manner, but at least the awakening of her powers has drained her so she can peacefully slumber for a few hours."

"And what about you?" Sly asked, causing his sister to turn towards him for a moment, where he could still see the anger in her eyes, the anger that had been directed at Clockwerk earlier, but he was relieved to see that her anger was starting to cool off, "You awakened your inner power as well, just like Mz. Ruby said that you and Derpy would do at some point in time... so what will you do?"

"I... I don't know." Gilda admitted, though as she answered the question she glanced over at her sister and ran a hand through her hair, allowing herself some time to actually think about what she wanted to do before they reached civilization and headed to the hospital that Murray was heading towards, "Maybe... maybe I'll fly to the Panda King's stronghold and see if I can't find the vault that we didn't get while we were there. It'll give me some time to clear my head and stop thinking about the anger that I feel inside my heart."

Sly knew how Gilda felt, since he had been angry with the Fiendish Five for the loss of his father and everything that happened after that fateful night, but it had allowed him to meet Gilda, Derpy, Bentley, and Murray in the first place, where they had formed a bond that wasn't easily broken. He was sure that heading back to China could wait until Derpy was stable and ready to move again, but he wasn't about to stop Gilda from doing what she wanted, not when she needed to come to terms with the fact that she now had magical abilities. As such he remained silent for the part of the trip that they were on, where he sat beside his sisters and stared at Derpy while she slept, while Gilda eventually moved away and started talking with Bentley about the combination for the vault and any supplies she could take with her for the journey to the stronghold. He then simply listened to the two as they talked about what his sister wanted to do and where they would meet up once they had taken Derpy to the hospital in question, just so Gilda knew where to find them once she had the missing page of the Thievius Raccoonus.

When Murray stopped the van, to refuel their gas, Gilda parted from their company and took off, heading in the direction of the Panda King's stronghold, though Sly simply sighed and returned to watching Derpy... and he remained that way as they traveled back towards Paris.

Finding the hospital that treated both sides of the law was easy, especially with their contacts, though getting in proved to be quite simple when Bentley informed the staff that a member of their gang had been wounded by Clockwerk, where Sly discovered how infamous that name really was. Despite the fact that it was only a few scratches to the eye, including the loss of the eye and the fact that the three cuts would forever remain embedded on her face, the staff insisted on not only checking Derpy for any other injuries, but also insisted on checking out the entire gang. Of course they weren't happy when they were told that the final member of their gang, Gilda, was somewhere else, but they reserved a spot for her in case she decided to show up later on. The only good thing about this situation was that there weren't a lot of people around when they checked themselves into the hospital, otherwise Sly was sure that they would have been swarmed with people, from both sides of the law, asking questions about what happened... though this allowed them to have some peace while the staff did their jobs.

The main doctor that checked up on them was a male donkey that seemed to walk with a limp, which was combated by his walking cane, and he seemed to be in a grumpy mood, or something similar, though if he was impressed by what they had done he didn't show it... not like the rest of the staff, who seemed happy when they learned that the Cooper Gang not only fought Clockwerk, but had bested him as well.

"Well, it appears that the majority of you are just fine," the doctor said, which was followed by him walking into the room that the others were in, while at the same time Sly carefully helped Derpy into a sitting position so she could see the doctor as well, "physically anyway. Sly Cooper, it seems that whatever pain you were feeling for the last ten years has been replaced by a new one, though maybe this time you'll succeed in getting rid of it, instead of finding a new source of pain to latch onto. It seems that, while he didn't actually participate in the battle with Clockwerk, your friend Murray still hurt himself on the way here... apparently he got so angry at seeing his friend hurt that he punched one of the brick walls near an area where you stopped for the night. Instead of breaking his bones, like he should have, he only bruised himself and took the wall down."

"That sounds like Murray." Sly commented, though at the same time Derpy nodded her head in agreement, as their friend did have a slight anger problem at times, but now he was likely thinking of a way to prevent the same thing from happening in the future.

"He also insists that he's going to become 'The Murray' and help you in the future." the doctor continued, his tone suggesting that Murray shouldn't even attempt something like that, but since he had no control over what his patients did before coming here he was going to let Murray do whatever he wanted, "Your friend Bentley managed to survive this conflict without being hurt, both physically and mentally, so he's good to go, though now he's also thinking of lending you another helping hand... increasing the number of active Cooper Clan members to five, instead of three."

"Hey, it'll help in future heists." Derpy said, knowing that it was only a matter of time until Murray and Bentley joined them in actually stealing things, even if they focused on other criminals that stole things they shouldn't have.

"And then we come to you, the main reason why the Cooper Gang came here," the doctor said, turning to actually face Derpy this time around, while at the same time he set down the clipboard that had been in his spare hand since he wanted into the room, "you are fortunate that all Clockwerk took was one of your eyes, as that bird has been known to seriously wound and cripple those that get in his way. That brings us to what we can offer you; we can get you a glass eye to replace what you've lost, we can try to get an eye like the bird you took out, or you can take the easy way out and just wear a protective eyepatch over your eye."

"I think I'll stick with an eyepatch for now... at least until the pain goes away." Derpy replied, as the thought of a glass eye or some sort of eye that resembled Clockwerk's eyes didn't sit well with her, especially after everything they had been through to best the Fiendish Five.

"As you wish." the doctor stated, though at the same time he picked up his clipboard and started to head for the door, but as he did so he turned and looked at the siblings, "You aren't the only ones that checked in recently, nor are you the only ones claiming to have fought Clockwerk... I believe it was Ms. Fox that showed up shortly after you did."

To Sly's surprise not only did Carmelita beat them to the hospital, how he didn't even want to think about, but she came in without her weapon and badge, the weapon having been turned over to the staff to make sure that the two sides didn't attack each other, while her police badge not being present meant she wanted to meet them as equals.

"I see all of you are doing well." Carmelita commented, though at the same time the look on her face said that she was nervous about being here, especially since this was likely going to appear on her record, that she visited this particular hospital, and that some of her superiors would be asking her about this visit in the future, "Especially Gilda. I saw her when I walked into the building and the staff said that she was in good health... despite the fact that she flew all the way to China, grabbed the last page of your family tome, and came back here while suffering from some muscle cramps, which is because she was flying so fast for a long period of time."

"Sounds like her," Sly said, though he knew that it would be some time before the staff let Gilda in to see them, if they thought there was more they needed to observe and study before they concluded that Clockwerk had done nothing to her... and he suspected that they wanted to study an actual griffin before the chance slipped away from them.

"Sly, there's another reason why I came here so quickly," Carmelita said, to which she pointed at Derpy for a moment, where occasionally one could see the flicker of lightning over her fingers, the sign that her power was real and that she could unleash it whenever she desired, even if it had destructive consequences, "I talked with one of my superiors on the way here and told them what happened to Clockwerk, so they could rest assured that he was taken care of, and they know that both Derpy and Gilda have powers. Now, before either of you shout at me for giving away your secrets, let me inform you that the powers you have awakened make you both a greater threat than most of the villains Interpol has been hunting down, and you've only used them once. Secretary Sen, one of the highest members of Interpol's governing body, learned of what I told my superiors and has asked me to tell you something... he wants Gilda and Derpy to train with Mz. Ruby so they can understand their powers and not become monsters like the voodoo priestess did."

Sly stiffened for a moment, because if one of the Secretaries of Interpol's governing body wanted his sisters to train and understand their abilities, learning from one of the Fiendish Five in the process, he knew that the answer had to be yes, otherwise they could easily be placed at the highest point of their list, where Clockwerk used to be, and they'd be arrested at some point in the future.

"There's more to this than what he told me, that much I know," Carmelita continued, to which she glanced over at Sly for a moment, remembering what had happened after Clockwerk's defeat, before sighing as she spoke again, "Sly, he wants to meet you and your sisters here, in two days, to personally explain everything to your gang... and I'm supposed to stay here and make sure you go nowhere, even though you wouldn't leave without making sure Derpy is fine and checked out by the staff."

Sly nodded and sat back in his chair, as it appeared that their lives were about to get all the more complicated than he had originally thought, as all he had been planning was taking out the Fiendish Five and collecting the pages of the Thievius Raccoonus. Even as he thought about the family tome Gilda walked into the room and joined them, happy to see that Derpy was okay and that there wasn't any additional harm to her from their fight with Clockwerk, before she turned over the page that she had found in the last vault, which had contained Colonel Reid Cooper's Time Stopper technique. Sly let a smile appear on his face as he stared at the completed tome once more, as the last time he had held it was when he was eight years old, and he knew that he, Gilda, and Derpy were truly master thieves for being able to take out the Fiendish Five and recover what they had stolen... and now it was their turn to write their adventures in the great book, once they were discharged from the hospital in a few days.
