A Fish Named SkyStar

Flirting & Stuff (Part I)

This chapter is from Pinkie's perspective.

Pink text in italics is Pinkie's thoughts.

Green text in italics is my thoughts (since this is a Pinkie Story and she breaks the fourth wall)

“Super glad you could meet me here.”

“Hey, it’s no problem, Skies, it’s always nice to meet with you.” SkyStar Novo, an old friend of mine a bit back before my family moved to Canterlot, had invited me to hang out at the beach that we seemed to be hanging out at more and more.

“Hey, I’m just finally glad my mother is letting me out of the room after all these years” she moved closer to me. “Though there are scouters for me everywhere.

“Yeah, speaking of which, how is your mother doing?”

“Still doesn’t come to the surface, preferring to use her guards to communicate with humans.”

“Yep, I figured.” Even with the Arissian embassies and nearby town to interact normally with the surface, Cassiopeia Novo was still suspicious of outsiders. Heck, I was pretty sure she hardly left the throne room, much less visited the surface.

It was Skies’ turn to ask, “So, what’s been going on with you?”

“Well, I got a job at the 50’s place in the mall, and me and my friend Fluttershy are officially a thing. We started just dating a couple months ago.”

“Oh.” Skystar looked a little disappointed over that. “That’s nice.”

“Are you okay, Skies? You look like you...”

“It’s ok Pinkie, I’m fine. Honestly, I just always thought you had a thing for me.” I looked at my fish-slash-human friend, (technically called an Arissian). She was barefoot, wearing a stomach-exposing white crop-top with no bra underneath, a blue buttoned shirt over it (unbuttoned of course), and cream-colored shorts that went about one-third of the way down her leg. Skies still didn’t like covering herself up too much, even after all her time on the surface. I guess spending practically your entire life wearing only seashell necklaces will do that to you. Her wavy pale blue hair was combed to the left side of her head, and she had the most adorable tiny freckles on her nose.

“Look, Skystar, I’m not denying you’re attractive - like a million times more than me - I only see us as friends, and even if I still liked you like that I don’t think I’m the kind of girl for you.”

“It’s okay, Pinkie, I’ve actually had my eye on other people,” she said sheepishly.

“Oh, really, who do you have in mind?”

“Well…” Skies stopped herself as we walked up to a seafood-type cart, with Skystar practically frozen in her tracks.

“Him.” Skystar pointed to the man behind the cart. He had slicked-back dark hair with a yellow streak in it, a pale-silver complexion, and his face had a boyish, hopeful look about it, basically what Rarity dubs a ‘Superman face’. He was wearing a bit more clothing than Skystar, his outfit being a black tank top, a royal-blue jacket with bright yellow and silver trimmings, and traditional blue jeans, rolled-up to show a bright yellow swordfish tattoo running down his leg.

“Whoa, who’s he?”

Skystar was clearly nervous, not making any direct eye contact with him, acting like a way more extreme version of Fluttershy (but not really). “He...his name is Spada.”

“Well, I’ve gotta say,” I paused trying to find the right words. “He’s...not bad-looking.”

Sky gave a light-hearted snort. “That coming from a girl that likes girls.”

“Hey, I like boys, too!” I protested, my hands on my hips. “I’m what you call a people person!”

“Sure, you keep telling yourself that,” Sky replied. The smile quickly fell from her face and she sheepishly looked down at her feet, holding her stomach. “Do you think I should talk to him?”

“Oh, come on, is that even a question?” I gave her a friendly punch in the shoulder. “If you like him so much, you should tell him how you feel.”

In hindsight, I should have probably been more…what’s the word...nuanced with my advice.

“Really?”

“Well yeah…”

“Thanks,” Skystar interrupted me and headed towards Spada.

“Wait, Skies, I think you should at least...”

It was too late. Skystar was already talking to Spada.

Awkwardly.

“Hiii Spaaada,” she said in an overly sensual and romantic tone.

“Oh, hey. You’re Skystar, the...ambassador’s kid, right.”

“Yes.” I watched the two, still unsure of where this was going.

“So, how’s life with your mother?”

Ok, she’s bringing up her personal life, this isn’t going too badly. I said to myself. Hope she doesn't screw up.

“It’s fine, I like that she always sends Scouters to keep tabs on me,” she said, a little too close to Spada.

Oh, jeez why would you say that OUT LOUD to another boy.

“Ok...too much information. How about we talk about something else?” Spada awkwardly replied.

“Oh… okay.” Sky seemed to deflate a bit, but quickly picked herself back up. “Say, would you like to know about my best friends Shelly and Sheldon?” she asked excitedly.

Oh, boy she‘s telling him about her inanimate object friends! I mean, I still talk to Gummy and Maude’s rocks, but still.

“Um, maybe?” Spada shrugged, seemingly slightly creeped out, but still interested...hopefully.

“HAW! HAW! HAW! You’re funny, Spada.”

Dear oatmeal she’s trying too hard.

“Anyway I made them when I was about four so I’d have someone to talk to when my mom kept me holed up in my room.”

“Ok, that’s a bit...creepy,” Spada said awkwardly, probably wishing to change the subject...again.

“I may be half-crazy…” Skystar said in an overly flirtatious tone, hugging Spada by the neck and got real close to his face like I have a habit of doing. “....But the other half is just fine.”

“S-somehow I doubt that,” Spada said, now a bit more fearful.

You and me both.

“Oh, just you wait, you’ll see.” Skystar got even closer to Spada’s face, sticking her tongue out.

Oh, poop this is getting bad, I need to do something.

I interjected just before Skies could start licking Spada.  “Hey, so you’re the Spada guy Skystar keeps talking about! You know, she said you were hot, but wow! That was the understatement of the year.”

Smooth, Pinkie, you do realize you have a girlfriend, right.

Shush up, Talky-box. I awkwardly defended myself “Sorry about that, you’re attractive and all, but I have a girlfriend, cause I’m bisexual, (not that I want to make that a big deal), so don’t….”

Spada sighed, looking slightly relieved as he disentangled himself from Skystar “Hey, it’s ok, I get complimented on my looks a lot. But, anyway, do either of you girls want any fish from the cart? I’ve got some fine stuff at a decent price.I’ve been meaning to ask you guys, do you want anything fish from the cart, I’ve got some fine stuff at a decent price.”

“Ummm, yeah…” I looked up at the menu above us, eyeing one of the options. Nothing immediately leapt out. I shrugged “I guess I’ll have one of your salmon pinwheels. Do you want anything Skystar?”

Sky looked at me unsure (and, in hindsight a little queasy). “No, not really, I’m good.”

I pulled out my wallet and handed him the money for the salmon. Which he promptly began cooking.

“So, SkyStar, how did you and Pinkie get to know each other?” he turned to us both.

I took the initiative to tell him. “Well, several years ago, my family was visiting this beach back before Ms. Novo took it over, I went for a swim and I got too far away from the shore and I forgot how to swim...she brought me back to the shore and saved me from drowning, we talked a bit and we decided to be friends…just friends….

“Yeah, she almost died! Our lips touched!”

I promptly whacked her in the back of the head.

“SkyStar!! Why would you tell him that?! Besides you had gills when you saved me, you couldn’t even do mouth-to-mouth, you used an artificial air bubble to save me.” I said, trying to keep Spada from hearing.

Well, I didn’t want him to get suspicious about me and the Arissians.”

“It’s fine,” Spada said, looking defeated as he handed me my salmon  “My father came from Arissia, I know all about that stuff.”

Ok, now this is significantly more awkward.

“Look, Spada, I know how you must feel about…”

“Hey, it’s fine, she was trying to save your life,” Spada said with surprising understanding knowing Arissians.

“And besides, you’ve kept it a secret for this long, knowing you, that has to count for something.” SkyStar tried to look optimistic, but that was quickly nixed by a convulsion and the sound of something trying to reach up SkyStar’s throat, which she quickly swallowed.

“Jeez, Skies are you ok.”

“Yeah, I’m fine Pinkie.”

She wasn’t. “Look, Sky, do you want to get back…”

“I’M FINE!” she protested….before immediately hacking up...whatever the Arissian Merfolk eat...on Spada and my fish.

“THE F-- DID YOU EAT!” Spada shrieked (for lack of a better term).

“....SYRUP AND SCRUNCHIES.”

Before I could say anything else, Skystar burst into tears and took off running towards the ocean. For not having been born on land, that girl could run when she wanted to. She quickly reached the ocean and disappeared beneath the waves. (In case you’re wondering, the Arrisians use artificial currents to get to and from the surface and their city, yes they are that advanced.)

I turned around to Spada, looking horrified and revolted  as I handed him some towels and napkins. “Look, Spada, I’m so sorry this whole thing happened, SkyStar is actually a pretty great girl when you get to know her, she’s just...hopelessly naive.” I turned my attention to the ocean behind me as I ran after SkyStar, pulling an orange pearl ring out of my hair and readying it for when I jump in the water.
