The Magic Words

by Inactive Pone

So Common, Yet So Different...

It was a fine and normal day in Equestria, like always. Today, Starlight originally invited Trixie to come over to the Friendship Castle to have a little bit of a chat, since they haven’t talked in a while. Problem is, Starlight had something to do at the last minute that she had forgotten, and unfortunately had to leave.

Trixie sighed as Starlight rushed off the castle doors before her.

“*sigh* Well... Guess I’ll come again another day,” She sighed.

She was going to leave, when somepony that she would definitely never forget tapped her from behind. The magician turned around, to find a purple alicorn, her arch nemesis, standing right in front of her.

Yet, Trixie blushed as she spoke.

“Trixie?” Twilight asked. “I haven’t seen you in like... Quite a while! What have you been up to?”

Trixie blushed even harder- For some reason, Twilight seemed a little more... kind to her than usual. Unlike the last time, Twilight didn’t seem to really hate her as much anymore. Taking a deep breath, she decided to reply.

“O-Oh, hey,” Trixie stuttered. “I-I was just going to talk with Starlight, but... *chuckles* Looks like somepony forgetful happened to remember something last minute. I’ll be on my way.”

But to her surprise, Twilight stopped her by walking in front.

“You can talk to me if you like,” She offered, smiling.

Trixie’s expression turned into a confused one. Twilight has never acted this way to her. Never has she been so kind, due to everything that happened between them. In the past, they were still pretty big rivals in magic. But it seemed to her this was a possible chance for them to connect with the other again.

“I’m intrigued by your words,” Trixie commented, tapping her chin with a hoof. “Trixie will accept your little request, if that makes you happy.”

Twilight nodded. “Great! Let’s talk in my bedroom. It’s pretty comfortable there and I just really want to relax there all the time for some reason. Come on!”

As the two walked side-by-side, they didn’t know this- But they were secretly blushing, and didn’t look at each other. They had some interesting things to talk about.

Once they took a moment to get comfy, they sat on the bed to have a nice friendly chat, without either of them trying to argue over who’s better at magic this time, at least.

“So... What’s been going on for you?” Twilight opened the conversation.

Trixie rolled her eyes, as always in her boastful style. “The Great and Powerful Trixie has a spectacular show coming up in Las Pegasus, princess. And let me tell you- I am beyond ecstatic about it!”

“Really, now?” Twilight’s eyebrows twitched in curiosity.

“Oh, I am dead serious!” Trixie exclaimed, shaking Twilight as if she’s emphasizing her point. “And you have no idea who I will be performing with! Take a guess.”

Twilight thought for a while, but she shook her head anyway.

“I am performing with two extremely famous magicians in Equestria,” Trixie explained, getting more excited. “And one of them happens to be Jack Pot, my father!”

Twilight gasped. “Wait, really? Rainbow Dash didn’t tell me that! She watched the show a while ago but I didn’t know that!”

Trixie nodded. “It’s true! And I haven’t seen him in like, forever! He’s been busy with his career. Oh, I can’t wait to see him again and do this wonderful show!”

Twilight gave a few little claps. “That’s great! Oh, is Starlight going with you?”

She nodded.

“Hm, I figured. You two always hang out together,” Twilight said, giving a intrigued glance.

“Why, of course! Trixie treats her friends really well and-“ She stopped. “Heeeeeeey... Ugh, what messed up thing are you thinking of now?”

Twilight giggled as Trixie gave her a nudge.

“N-Nothing! I’m just worried she’s going to skip her work again,” Twilight briefly explained.

Trixie shot her a confused look. “Wait, what work?”

“Oh! She didn’t tell you?” Twilight giggled, getting up. “Well, after we saved Equestria from the Storm King, we’ve noticed a lot has changed outside our land. Other tribes are all around us and we want to spread the magic of friendship to them too, so my friends and I decided to open a friendship school! I’m actually a little surprised you didn’t see it, despite it being just next door.”

The magician was very interested. “And Starlight teaches there?”

“Mhmm!” Twilight replied. “Hey, would you be interested in enrolling next year, by any chance?”

“R-Really?”

“Yeah!”

Trixie was really excited and let out a squeak as she shook her body and her tail swished. Twilight could tell she was trying to go for a hug, but Trixie resisted.

“Pfft, no!” She moaned in grotesque. “The Great And Powerful Trixie doesn’t do hugs. And definitely not with her former rival.”

Twilight snickered and smiled a little coldly. “Guess we still hate each other, huh?”

They turned to look each other with narrowed eyes. A second later, they started laughing. They both knew they’ve ended their rivalry after Starlight fixed things between them. The two continued to chat a little awkwardly for the next half an hour or so about other things that’s been happening, and talking more about magic, of course.

This was when Twilight brought up an interesting question.

“Hey... Trixie?”

“Yes?”

“I’ve had this question in my mind for a while now...”

She rolled her eyes. “Go ahead, Trixie awaits your little question.”

Twilight blushed. She was really shy to ask about this.

“You see... We’ve been through a lot as rivals,” Twilight began. “You and I were at each other’s throats very often. A while ago, we had this magic duel, you remember that?”

“I know. And I would’ve won if you didn’t ‘cheat’...”

“That’s not the point,” Twilight reminded, carrying on what she tried to say. “What I mean is... Why are we still fighting? Yes, yes, I know we argue a lot over who’s better at magic and I was the one who started it in the first place, which was a foolish decision of me... but why can’t we just agree we’re both just as good at it now?”

“W-What? Trixie is confused...”

She sighed. “You see... Why can’t I be friends with you just like Starlight? I am the Princess of Friendship, I shouldn’t despise another pony just because they’ve hurt me or my feelings... I was just defending what’s right when you returned. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Trixie nodded. “I’m listening. And... Yeah, my revenge was taken... A little too far. I will admit that.”

“*sigh* I just want to forget everything that happened between us,” The alicorn continued. “All of our fights... our disagreements... Whatever moment that we had where we didnt respect each other.”

There was a moment of silence as the two collected their thoughts.

“You’re not the only one thinking that way...”

“Huh?”

Trixie walked over to her. “Starlight And I went through our rivalry several times before, since she was curious. She... She told me a lot of meaningful things and I’ve been reflecting a lot. *sigh* I did a lot for worse, I know. And I know I shouldn’t be boasting so often. I was... kinda naive.”

Twilight playfully chuckled at her words.

“It’s not your fault I hated you,” Twilight carried on, keeping the gap close. “I did something wrong too. I didn’t want to escalate our magic duel into something all of Ponyville had to bear. And, I didn’t mean to hurt you and Starlight’s friendship when I first knew about it. It’s just... *sigh* At the moment, I just hated seeing anypony being your ally.”

“Why didn’t you say so, then?” Trixie asked.

Twilight was confused.

“Okay, well, even if you told me, I wouldn’t have listened, since I haven’t technically changed yet,” She giggled. “What I mean is... If you really hold such a grudge about me, why don’t we talk about it together? No need to fight and all that.”

Twilight thought for a moment- She’s right.

“Yeah, I suppose that’s a good idea,” She agreed. “I didn’t think you’ll change at first, but seeing how Starlight helped you realize your flaws... That’s such a good thing to hear. Haha, I’m going to thank her in a minute when she comes back.”

Trixie smiled as Twilight went to look out the window of her room. She wanted to ask her something, but was so shy that she didn’t want to embarrass herself in front of her rival. The princess noticed her sudden silence. She was deeply in thought, thinking about everything she said- Trixie has never been kind to her. And she noticed her change in tone as she spoke. All these clues... Did that mean something, perhaps?

“Wait a minute...” Twilight suddenly said. “Trixie...”

“Huh? What’s with your change in tone?”

Twilight slowly walked back over, and threw a hoof around her neck. Trixie let out a squeak and blushed.

“Do you have something about me you’re trying to hide?” The princess winked at her.

The showmare let out an innocent chuckle. “Oh... I...”

The two stood in front of each other, both smiling nervously and their cheeks turning red.

“Come on,” Twilight playfully teased. “Tell me about it...”

Trixie wanted to bail off from how shy she was- She won’t ever show this side to anypony that’s not close with her. But even so, now that they’ve kinda made up for everything, she knew she had to confess it to her.

“P-Promise you won’t tell anypony?” She asked.

Twilight smiled. “I promise.”

The magician took a deep breath.

“I don’t know why... And I don’t know how, but...” Trixie stuttered, tracing circles with her hoof on the floor. “I... I like you, Twilight.”

The alicorn’s eyes were open wide in surprise. “Wh-What!?”

Trixie sighed. “I know. Shocked, aren’t you? But... Really... I don’t know how in the world I got this crush, but I did somehow. It’s just... Since I became friends with Starlight, I’ve learned just how amazing you really are and how great of a friend you could be. I... I understand we’ve been fighting with each other a lot, but this thought won’t leave my head... And every time I think of you, for some reason, I... I feel something... Different, you can say. I hate you, but... somewhere in my heart... Something tells me that... That you’re my friend all along.”

Twilight’s eyes was getting a little moist. “Trixie...”

The mare didn’t really listen and carried on. “Starlight taught me so much about friendship and... I’m guessing it all came from you. She did encourage me a lot to apologize to you, that’s why I wanted to talk with you. But... I was never brave enough to admit my mistakes... I know I was wrong and I am sorry, Twilight. You probably won’t like me back, but... Can we at least stop quarreling with each other?”

Trixie held out her hoof. Twilight, surprised, smiled and shook it with her’s.

“I’m sorry too,” She confessed. “And... Honestly... I don’t know why either, but... I like you too...”

“Wait, you do!?”

Twilight wiped the tear from her eye. “It sounds weird, but... You are a really interesting pony. I really want to know more about your better side, besides how boastful you are, of course. And... I guess that derived my feelings for you. I really never thought I would say this to you, Trixie. Never in my life. However... Maybe we can be something more? Together? I’m new to this relationship thing and I know we just made up, but I just... I really couldn’t resist thinking about you.”

Trixie grinned with a blush. “Awww... Twilight...”

Twilight grinned too and pressed her cheek against her friend’s, making her giggle.

“So...?” She asked, chuckling.

“Are you kidding!? Yes!” Trixie squeaked, tackling the princess in a hug. She nuzzled her head against Twilight’s chest, and the pony princess could only lie down and watch at how playful her friend was.

“Hey, I thought you didn’t like cuddling?” Twilight asked, her hooves around her best bud.

Trixie just laughed. “Oh, I was kidding! I said I didn’t like that because you were still my rival!”

“In that case...” Twilight had an idea. “Wanna snuggle up in bed together, perhaps?”

“O-Oh... B-But...”

“Come on, it’ll be fun!”

Without hesitation, Twilight grabbed Trixie’s hooves and proceeded to pull her up onto the bed with her. She was beyond excited to do this, for one, she loves snuggling, and two, she’s hoping to help Trixie loosen up and tighten their bond more through this. Only a few seconds upon they got themselves comfy, Twilight was nuzzling her muzzle against Trixie’s affectionately, making the showmare let out an adorable squeak.

“You do know how to cuddle, right?” Twilight asked, her ear perking up.

Trixie blushed- She didn’t want to admit she doesn’t know that. Especially when Twilight wanted to do it with her so badly. She didn’t really want to crush her hopes.

“Well...” She nervously giggled. “Truth is... I don’t do this often.”

Twilight laughed. “That’s okay. I guess I’ll tell you how. Cuddling it’s a great way to deepen friendships, so this would be perfect. It will involve a lot of close contact with your partner. *sigh* Guess we’re stuck together if we wanna do this. But, it’s not bad at all, trust me.”

“Okay...” Trixie agreed, her cheeks still burning red. “I kinda still hate you for what happened, but Trixie will make a pass for this moment, for her new friend is desperate for affection.”

They shared a short giggle.

“Alright,” Twilight began. “This is really easy. But first, let’s hug.”

The two blushed, and wrapped each other in their hooves in a warm embrace.

“Now, just ease into the contact. Do whatever you feel comfortable, Trixie.”

“Can I?”

“Sure! Just... Don’t get too carried away.”

***10 Minutes Later***

“Ahhhhh~” Trixie purred blissfully. “Why in the absolute world are you so comfortable to snuggle with?”

Twilight tugged her closer to her body. “I could ask the same thing...”

It’s only been around half an hour since they made up, and now they’re freaking spooning together in bed. The princess just buried her head in Trixie’s pretty blue fur and nuzzled it. Trixie turned, and nuzzled her head against Twilight’s with affection. Rubbing her hooves up and down on the alicorn’s back, she found this rather amusing as she got the same treatment. Crossing their legs together, they tried to deepen their contact.

They both sighed in bliss and looked at each other.

“Please don’t let go,” Trixie begged. “The Great And powerful Trixie is enjoying this very much.”

Twilight shook her head with a few cute squeaks like a filly. “Of course I won’t let go! Your... Your body is surprisingly fluffy, so good for cuddling. And what is that scent you’re using? It’s so unbelievably nice.”

“It’s roses.” Trixie winked. “Your choice ain’t that bad either, even for Trixie’s tastes.”

Twilight tittered. “Lavender. It just suits me. Haha, I guess we’re kinda getting into a little... A bit more personal, huh?”

“Yeah,” The magician said before brushing Twilight’s mane. “Never thought this would happen. Honestly, if I hadn’t changed, I would be so disgusted right now. Seriously! Cuddling with my arch nemesis? Confessing how much I wanted to be your friend? It’s just... Ugh!”

“I would have felt the same way,” Twilight confessed, letting out a playful laugh. “Come on, snuggling with you, Trixie? So gross for a princess like me. It’s not the same case now, at least.”

They sighed gladly. They’ve really changed, didn't they? From rivals in magic to now best friends, it was hard for them to believe, but all along, they were friends meant to be. It’s just they didn’t know it at the time.

“Actually, Trixie...”

“What’s up?”

“I... I kinda lied to you,” Twilight sheepishly said. “I actually have another special somepony already. So... I really can’t be with you. I’m sorry.”

Trixie shook her head with a grin. “No, it’s okay. We’ve just made up, it’s a bit quick to jump into it anyway. Plus... I too have feelings for somepony.”

“Really? Who?”

Trixie leaned her head closer to whisper, even though they were already tightly hugging each other. Twilight gasped at her response.

“Yes, yes, Trixie knows... I am weird, wanting to go out with Starlight, another mare.”

“*giggles* You’re not the only one.”

Twilight whispered that she was dating Tempest.

“Wait, What!?” Trixie burst out laughing. “You’ve got to be kidding me! You’re dating the one who was once your biggest enemy to date? I heard about what happened and oh my Celestia is she strong! And I don’t understand- You’re a princess, but you’re not straight. What!?”

The princess just shut her up with a hoof in her mouth.

“*chuckles* It’s what I do,” She explained. “Going around and spreading the magic of friendship to Everypony, even my enemies. Including you, Trixie. To be honest... I’ve wanted to apologize to you about all our quarrels for a long time and be your friend. But... I just never had the courage to do it directly, because...”

“Because you thought I wouldn’t accept your apology?” Trixie finished her sentence.

She nodded.

“Oh, Twilight...” Trixie cried, tightening her grip on her friend. She felt the same treatment. “If you know how much Starlight has changed me, The Great And Powerful Trixie would certainly have accepted you. I’m sorry too, you know I am. Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”

She heard sobbing coming beside her. She brushed away Twilight’s mane, to see her friend crying.

“*sobs* I’m... I’m so sorry I treated you like that...” Twilight cried. “When you returned... I... I felt I was... *sob* I was so mean to you! I was trying to tear you and Starlight apart... Can you ever forgive me, Trixie?”

She smiled, and nuzzled her muzzle on the alicorn’s.

“The regret is on me,” Trixie replied. “Boasting how good I am at being a magician... How naive of me. We both did something wrong to each other, Twi. So... Let’s just forget that we fought and move on, okay?”

Twilight’s tears stopped flowing as Trixie placed a hoof under her head. Finally, she nodded.

“Truce, Trixie?” Twilight asked.

She agreed. “Truce, Twi.”

The two beamed and cuddled, with one on top of the other. Their foreheads touched, and they both held each other’s hooves. Their faces were as red as a rose.

“I have a request...” Twilight broke the silence of their cuddling. “It’s... It’s going to be weird, though.”

“Tell me,” Trixie begged.

Twilight broke her eye contact with her best friend for a few seconds, before turning back.

“C-Can I...” She stuttered. She took a deep breath to try to rephrase it. “*chuckle* Can I kiss you?”

Trixie immediately covered her mouth with both her hooves in shock.

“D-Do you... Are you sure?” She questioned.

Twilight laid a hoof at where her friend’s heart was supposed to be. “If you do love me, why not? *giggles* Besides, I’m helping you get ready to go for the big fish later. You’ll thank me, I swear.”

Trixie playfully rolled her eyes, and chuckled. “Okay. Haha, yeah. This really is weird... But... Kiss me, Twi...”

“*giggles* Haha, you come here!”

And all of a sudden, the door swung open!

“Hey Twilight I just got back from-“ Starlight stopped.

The two heard her and instantly jumped up, still holding each other.

“Ahhh! Starlight!” They both yelled.

The mare gasped- She couldn’t believe her eyes either- Twilight and Trixie, together, hugging? In bed too? She was immediately intrigued, and knew that they’ve made up. She slithered over to join the two, bringing them close with her hooves between them.

“Awwww, cute~ You two made up?” Starlight asked, looking back and forth. “Ugh, about time...”

Twilight winked to Trixie, and Trixie winked back to Twilight. They wanted to play along with a joke.

“Pfft, no!” Trixie rejected, moaning in disgust. “Why would I, The Great And Powerful Trixie surrender to her rival and become her friend?”

Twilight let a frown take over and got off the bed. “Ugh, Finally something we can agree on, why would I be friends with you? I hated you, Trixie!”

“I hate you too, Twi! Get out of my face!”

The two pushed heads back and forth, feeling upset that they’re with their rival and being so close. They let out a few grunts and closed their eyes as they started to argue, until Starlight cut between them.

“Hey hey hey! Calm down!” Starlight said.

But the two just smiled and started loosing their minds.

“We were kidding, Starlight!” Twilight laughed. “You really think we meant it?”

Trixie went to put a hoof around her friend. “You tell her, Twilight! Just take that as payback for bailing off from our hangout at the last minute.”

Starlight snickered and gave her a little hug. “Hey, come on! Sorry I forgot that I had to do something with Sunburst, okay?”

“Haha, it’s fine.”

“We’ll tell you everything later,” Twilight said. “Right now... We’re kinda busy.”

Starlight couldn’t help chuckling. “Oh, I see what you two are doing... I’m watching you...”

As she left and the doors closed, the two looked at each other.

“Where were we?” Trixie asked.

Twilight gave her a kiss. “Uhhhh that?”

They both laughed and went back to bed, before Trixie returned the favor.

“Wanna stay for the night?” Twilight suggested. “It’s early now but we can have a sleepover. Just us.”

“Ha, you still do that? Okay, okay. That seems really fun! I have some stuff to do at the moment to kill time. I’ll see you in a bit?”

“Not a problem. Bye!”

**********

That night, the two ponies met up just outside the room.

“*chuckles* Hey, bestie~” Trixie said in an amused tone.

They exchanged a kind hug.

“Hey,” Twilight replied, smiling. “Come on, time is candy.”

As soon they entered and plopped back onto the bed, they were already snuggling each other like crazy, nuzzling forcefully against their friend. They messed with each other’s mane and fur too, tickling each other.

“Hahaha, stop it, Trix!” Twilight laughed as Trixie was tugging her ear a little from behind.

She turned to nuzzle their foreheads together, pushing just a bit.

“No, you stop it, Twi!” Trixie giggled. “Don’t you push me!”

It was like they were two naive fillies again- Tickling and playing around with each other. They kept cuddling in different ways, played along in a silly quarrel, and of course flirted a ton, even though they won’t be a couple. All the two wanted to do was have some nice quality time with their new friend.

“*laughs* I wonder... Why did we fight again?” Trixie jokingly questioned.

Twilight rolled her eyes. “I don’t know, because we were arguing over who’s better at magic?”

They both laughed. They couldn’t believe how naive they had been.

“Haha, very funny,” Trixie commented. “Seriously... I’m so glad to be your friend. Really.”

“I think so too.”

They both stared at each other for a few minutes.

“So... About what happened before Starlight came in,” Twilight said, sticking out a tongue playfully. “Shall we?”

Trixie rolled her eyes and grinned. “Oh, haha, that. Well, there are no more distractions this time, at least. In fact, I have a fun little idea we could try out.”

She proceeded to wink at her as she got off the bed. Twilight, with her eyebrows perking up a little in curiosity, decided to just go with the flow and got off the bed, back on her hooves.

“You know... we’ve technically never settled our magic duel, Twilight,” Trixie pointed out.

Twilight knew where this was going, and winked back to play along as she stepped over.

“Oh, really?” She asked, standing in front of her friend. “I thought I won the duel?”

“Pfft,” Trixie jokingly stuck out a tongue to make fun of the princess. “You won one, and I won one too. It’s kinda natural we need a decider.”

Twilight rolled her eyes. “Come on, Trix. Do we really have to argue over this again?”

“*Snickers* Yes we do!” Trixie replied.

“We just made up!”

“I don’t care...”

Narrowing their eyes and stepping close, the two ponies playfully argued over who was better at magic, pushing heads and all that and squeezing each other’s muzzle.

“Right here, right now?” Trixie suggested.

Twilight nodded. “Oh, why not. Don’t get too carried away, though.”

“Hmph, Fine. Ready, Twilight Sparkle?

“Ready, Trixie Lulamoon.”

They both spit onto their hooves a little and pressed them against each other’s, then giving a hoofshake. Twilight made fun of Trixie a bit, and Trixie did the same. They walked close, and winked before their expression changed.

They starred for a minute or two, waiting for each other to start it. But seeing the silence won’t help, Twilight just Encouraged Trixie by clashing their horns together, both glowing. Trixie smiled. So did Twilight.

They were going to spark it off when they tilted their heads and accidentally kissed each other. Splitting themselves apart and covering their mouths, they both blushed.

“W-Wow...” Twilight said. “I... I didn’t expect that to be so...”

“Heartwarming, perhaps?” Trixie finished her sentence. “Yeah, me neither...”

They both winked, and burst into laughter after they tried to hide their smile.

“*giggles* Oh, Trixie, you are so bad at acting!” Twilight giggled. “I totally knew where it was going!”

Trixie laughed as she nudged her. “Oh come on, Twilight! I was going to be the one kissing you, not both of us doing it!”

“*laughs* Haha, come here!”

Twilight just pulled her into a hug. Trixie accepted it very kindly, and squeezed her friend’s body. They let go for a moment to get back on the bed.

“Wanna try it again?” Twilight offered.

Trixie didn’t need her to ask- She pressed her lips on Twilight’s, making the princess squeak in surprise, before applying pressure to the contact gently. They kissed a couple more times, on the cheek, the ear, the horn, and of course on the lips as well.

Twilight pulled the bedcovers up to prevent anyone from seeing them being so cheesy.

“Mmmm,” She hummed as her lavender lips drew impact wh Trixie’s blue ones. “This feels so nice...”

“I’m liking this too,” Trixie responded, breaking the kiss afterwards. “This is actually pretty new to me. How’d I do?”

“Haha, you played along well!” Twilight winked. “Oh sure, we’re not lovers but Nopony said friends couldn’t do this either! It’s just... An interesting memory to share, don’t you think so?”

“Mhmm,” Trixie agreed as she snuggled up closer. “And I learnt something from today.”

“What’s that?”

“Even the worst of enemies could become friends, as long as they try to work past their differences.”

Twilight nodded. “Indeed, Trixie. And for that, come here!”

“Whoa, hey!”

She leaned to place another smooch- A forceful one. Trixie responded to the strong contact and hummed happily. Their lips parted around 10 seconds later.

“It’s late now,” Twilight reminded. “Let’s get some shut-eye.”

Trixie nodded. “Sure. I think I’ll sleep better tonight- Having cuddles with my best friend.”

“Of course you will. So... What other things have you got planned?”

“The show I told you about is in a month or two, so... Nothing special for now. Heeeeeey, you wanna have more sleepovers with me, don’t you?”

“Haha, you got me.”

With only their heads peeping out of the covers, Twilight gave a peck on the muzzle, which Trixie gladly returned. Finally, after all that has happened, under the light of the moon, they said the magic words to each other.

“I love you, Trix. I really do.”

“And I love you too, Twi.”

Before they went asleep, they let their heads draw closer as Twilight pulled them close together with a wing. Their tails swished across each other’s body as they cuddled in bliss. Giving a playful lick on each other’s lips, the two giggled. Letting themselves rest into the contact, they closed their eyes and dreamt about each other.

And they were right- They indeed slept very well, in the hooves of their former rival, now a loving friend.
