Chapter 8 "First Day Pt. 2"

Daniel kept listening, completely enthralled with the filly teaching him about the different and interesting species living in the small kingdom.

“Anyways, we are almost there are there any other questions?” Starry asked, looking slightly up at Daniel a small smile touching her face.

Daniel shook his head, taking his eyes off the young filly and becoming rather interested in the floor as a small blush spread across his face.

As they continued they’re walk, the school began to come into view along with the edge of the wall Daniel saw when he first arrived.

“Well…here we are if you need any help with notes I’d be happy to help.” Starry stated nervously, looking up at the prince with a small blush.

Daniel simply nodded, looking at the school curiously.

*W-What is this feeling in my chest* Daniel and Starry thought, looking down their blushes deepening.

“STARRY SWIRLS!” a female voice called, distress clear in her voice.

Immediately, Starry let go of Daniel’s hand for the first time since they left the castle straightening herself as a soldier would to his commanding officer.

“Y-YES MA’ME!” Starry replied, a little louder than intended as she looked down at her teacher’s front claws.

The creature that Starry addressed as a filly, looked rather strange to the young prince, she looked more like a griffon with her sharp talons grounding her to the dirt below, her wings which to him looked to be just as large as his mothers, and even a beak. However, Daniel noticed that instead of the lion’s tail that Starry described on their way over wasn’t present, instead it looked more like a pony’s tail, her hind legs ended in hooves rather than lion’s paws. All a shade of golden brown with darker brown spots covering her underside, except for her head and tail which were a color of white Daniel couldn’t describe. He looked at his soon to be teacher, with pure child-like curiosity.

This brought Starry out of her embarrassed state, as she looked at Daniel with worry, thinking that maybe he was afraid of their instructor.

*Daniel…* Starry thought, sympathy in her eyes as a small blush returned to her face.

“Miss Crush, I’m sorry for being late please don’t blame Daniel…” Starry stated, her voice losing confidence as she spoke to her instructor.

“Daniel?” Miss Crush questioned, looking over the boy curiously.

Daniel, shied away unsure how to respawn, choosing instead to nod his head gently. He maybe curious, but to him this ‘teacher’ made him very nervous all the same.

“So, you are the boy princess Luna came to tell me about?” Miss Crush questioned, more to herself than anyone as she slowly moved around the young prince looking him over suspiciously, stopping once she stood in front of both once again. “Well, I suppose I can’t punish either of you for being late.”

Starry worry began to fade as she looked at Daniel again, assuring him everything would be okay.

“However, you will have to stay late to help clean and catch the young prince up on his studies.” Miss Crush stated, a small smile playing on her beak as she ruffled her most prized student and her newest, and interesting student.

At this, Starry smiled grabbing Daniel’s hand, pulling him inside to start their new day of learning.

“Come on let’s sit together, there’s always an empty seat next to me.” Starry stated, causing the young prince’s face to turn a light shade of red, as he followed her not saying a word.

“Ah…young love.” Mrs. Crush chuckled under her breath, as she slowly entered the schoolhouse to start the day’s lesson.

It was probably one of the most, interesting experiences Daniel has had since being brought to the castle. The whole time during his new instructor’s teachings, Daniel had been asking questions nonstop about almost everything they discussed, causing the class to run longer than any had regularly expected. While Mrs. Crush, and Starry both appreciated his curiosity, most if not all the students looked at Daniel as if he was one of the most hideous, and idiotic creature they have ever seen.

As the class began to leave Starry eagerly moved her desk right against his, excited to see how the young prince thought of his first day of school was. “So, were the lessons easy to understand, or do you want my help to understand more?” She asked, her eye’s turning into the shape of stars, eager to teach Daniel everything she could about today’s assignments.

Daniel simply nodded, mesmerized by the stars in Starry’s eyes, a small blush spreading on his face as his heart began to race once again.

“Oh good, did you take notes? I didn’t see you do much writing.” Starry asked bluntly, receiving a rather confused look from the young prince.

“N-Notes?” Daniel repeated, still finding it hard to speak in full sentences at times especially around the filly that seemed to make him feel…happy?

“Yes notes, you know what you write down to remember specific, and crucial information?” Starry asked, her large vocabulary only confusing the young prince more.

Daniel only tilted his head, oblivious to what she had just explained to him as he did his best to try and understand.

Starry gave him a concerned look, sighing as she realized that she forgot to mention that little bit of information with him.

“I’m sorry Daniel; I forgot that this was your first time at school. Let me expla-“

“HEY SWIRLY!” interrupted a young boy’s voice, causing Starry to face hoof and groan in annoyance.

“Not him again, Daniel stay behind me okay.” Starry instructed, the young prince acting quickly behind her.

This time, Daniel quickly recognized the boy in front of them was a griffon, but a much smaller and assumed younger than he heard griffons could get. Behind him was another griffon, but one that looked a lot slenderer, and feminine than the boy, so Daniel could only assume she was a female. Alongside both, were two less intimidating griffons that bore angry looks on their beaks. The young prince looked on in caution, but also a hint of curiosity.

“Your stupid pet kept me, and my friends from our recess time.” The griffin stated, stopping right in front of the filly, Daniel hiding behind her fear written on his face.

“He’s not a pet Butch his name is Daniel, and it’s ‘my friends and I.’ not ‘me, and my friends.’’ The young filly corrected, doing her best to sound confident for the sake of her newfound friend.

“Oh, aren’t we feeling brave Swirly, so what is this freak your boyfriend or something?” Butch asked, pushing the unicorn roughly causing Starry to bump into Daniel.

“N-NO HE ISN’T” Starry unintentionally shouted, a large blush plaguing her muzzle.

“W-We aren’t f-friends?” Daniel asked shyly, worried that he might not have gained any friends like his mother told him.

“N-No we are friend’s Daniel, i-it’s just- he just- UGH!” Starry tried to form a coherent sentence, but was too flustered to say anything that made any sense.

“I can’t believe this little ‘Swirly Spells’ her has her very own little crush.” Butch teased, laughing at the filly with no restraint his friends following suit.

“Sh-Shut up, B-Butch you Beak brain!” Starry yelled, her embarrassment getting the better of her as she insulted the larger boy.

“What did you just call me?” Butch asked the group’s laughter from before dying after hearing the insult towards him.

Starry let out a small ‘eep’, realizing what she just called the griffon in front of her.

“I-I’m sor-.“ Starry tried to apologize, but was slapped violently to the side falling to the hard dirt path below.

“Sorry, isn’t going to save you horn head.” Butch said darkly, cracking his talons for more intimidation.

As Butch lifted his arm to enact more damage on Starry, she flinched clenching her teeth as she prepared for the blow.

However, it never came; instead she heard a loud +SMACK+ and the sound of something hitting the dirt next to her.

“Huh, so what now the FREAK wants to be a hero?” Butch said, as Starry opened her eyes to see that Daniel had taken the blow for her and was now on the floor, his face bleeding from a not so small cut on his cheek.

*H-He protected me?* Starry thought as she moved closer to him, a worried look on her muzzle.

However before she could, two of the other male griffins pinned the young filly down, her muzzle being pushed into the dirt.

“Oh, no if you’re little “Friend” here wants to play hero, let’s see how he can protect you from me.”

She heard Butch say, as she saw him move closer to Daniel a devious smile on his beak.

“Don’t hurt him!” Starry yelled, fighting desperately to break away from the two bigger and stronger griffons.

Butch didn’t listen, this was shown as he pick Daniel off the ground and began to hit him over and over, giving Daniel more bruises and cuts on his face.

“STOP BUTCH, PLEASE!” Starry screamed her crying intensifying for her friend.

Starry could only watch, as tears of fear and worry for her friend streamed down from her eyes to the dirt path below.

It felt like an eternity before Butch finally stopped, leaving Daniel on the floor his breathing shallow and facing away from Starry.

Starry had long since stopped resisting, as Butch pulled her up by her hair ready to finish what he originally started with her.

“This is what happens Swirly, when you insult someone bigger, and stronger than you will ever be.” Butch stated, his breathing slightly ragged as he lifted his talon once again to start another beat down.

Before that could happen however, Butch felt something push him with the strength of a battering ram as he let go of Starry’s mane letting her drop to the ground, he following soon after.

As Butch slowly got back up, he looked around angrily searching for his next punching bag. Instead, he found Daniel standing in front of him, his arms out as he looked down.

“What the hell?” Butch looked with a furrowed brow, moving towards Daniel getting in his face.

“So, still have some fight left in you FREAK?” Butch asked angrily, a slight growl in his voice.

“L-Leave….My…..Friend…ALONE!” Daniel yelled, pushing the griffon again, this time farther and with much more force.

The sky became darker, as dark clouds mysteriously formed above them as Butch once again got up flinching at the unexpected pain in his chest from where Daniel had pushed him.

“DAMN YOU, FREAK OF NATURE!” Butch yelled furiously, as he spread his wings flying towards him with all the force he could muster.

Before the attack could land however, a powerful force field appeared around Daniel, causing the griffon to essentially hit the magical field hard and landing on the floor.

There was a bolt of lightning, and for the first time they noticed a larger than average ponies shadow moving towards them.

Starry as well as the other three griffins’ looked in awe at the sight before them, the former shying away from the mare approaching.

At first, the figure just kept moving closer, however when another bolt of lightning struck, the mares wings unfurled and her eyes turned pure white with rage.

It was then that the group of griffin’s felt fear unlike anything they’ve felt in there short lives, as Luna the princess of the night and stars moved inside the magical force field around Daniel gently lifting his head and looking down at him with a look of sorrow, and pain.

“Who did this?” She asked in a normal tone, one that sent shivers down the spines of all the griffins.

When no one answered, the lunar princess with her magic, gently lifted her son onto her back, and turned to the group of griffins once again putting more emphasis into her earlier question.

“WHO DID THIS, to MY SON!?!” She yelled, the griffins around her holding their breaths Butch being the one more terrified than anything.

Pointing a hoof in Butch’s general direction, Starry said nothing choosing instead to just cry, regretting that as Daniel’s friend she couldn’t protect him.

Luna looked to Starry nodding in understanding, using her magic to levitate her onto her back as well, next to Daniel where she only continued to cry gently nuzzling Daniel and his bruised up face.

Butch was filled with dread his expression, clear that he was afraid that the princess would hurt him, or worse.

“You…” Luna stated darkly, the storm clouds above dispersing as she slowly approached the young griffin.

Butch stumbled backwards, tripping over fear, and landing on his rump looking up at the monarch frightfully.

“I-I’m sorry, I-I didn’t know he was your son please forgive me!” begged Butch, fear evident in his voice as he bowed to the princess of the night to emphasize his point.

Luna lowered her head towards the young griffins face, giving him a stern look.

“Come anywhere near my son again, and I’ll make sure you never see the light of day again. Do I make myself clear?”

Luna sat at the foot of her bed, looking down towards the two young children currently laying there one with her hooves wrapped gently, but firmly around the others arm. The other, being bandaged and with more than a few bruises covering his face, and upper body from the injuries he sustained. The sight alone was enough to break the monarch’s heart; as yet another set of tears began to fall from her muzzle.

*How could I have let this happen, I should’ve sent a small group of guards with him.* Luna thought, mentally whipping herself for what had happened to her son.

After she had dealt with the young griffin by informing his parents of what he had done, she took her Starry and her son back to the castle to receive treatment for their injuries. It took about an hour before Starry could speak clearly, but when she could Luna asked the young filly what had happened to cause the whole thing. To be honest, Luna was rather upset at Starry, but calmed herself knowing that she was only a child and had no experience in dealing with petty squabbles.

Ivory had later come rushing into the room, worried about what had happened to her daughter, but after a quick explanation from the filly herself she immediately turned to apologize for what had happened, scolding her daughter for being so irresponsible. Starry however, stayed next to the young prince holding his hand the entire time, doing her best to help Luna tend to him best she could. Ivory had attempted to take Starry back home, but in the end, Luna offered to watch over them for the night, assuming that no matter how much Ivory tried her daughter wouldn’t budge.

*She cares for him deeply, I’m glad he’s found at least one friend. There aren’t many in this world who would do what this little filly is doing now.* Luna thought, a small smile playing on her face as she looked upon the sweet scene displayed before her.

“M-Momma, are you okay?”

Luna was snapped out of her thoughts, seeing Daniel opening his eyes the tired expression on his face turning to one of worry as he asked his question.

“Hello, my little one, yes everything I’m doing just fine…how about you, are you in any pain?” Luna asked, nuzzling Daniel’s cheek gently doing her best not to hurt her son further.

Daniel’s expression turned sour, as he looked down towards Starry who was only holding onto his arm tighter.

“I-Is Starry okay, that mean griffin hit her, and gave her a scratch.” Daniel asked, with all the worry a young child of his age could feel for another.

Luna nuzzled Daniel, assuring him that everything was fine, and that they were both safe in their bedroom.

“Starry really cares for you, she wouldn’t leave your side, and helped the nurses patch you up.” Luna stated smiling, causing Daniel to blush slightly from the information.

“S-She’s my friend, like the ones you told me about, right mommy?” Daniel asked, looking at his mother with a hopeful expression.

“Yes, she is exactly the kind of friend I want my adorable son to have.” Luna stated, nuzzling the now beet red prince as he looked down embarrassed.

“You were right, some of my classmates were looking at me funny, and then Butch showed up and he…hurt her.” Daniel told his mother, looking down sad that he couldn’t protect his friend.

“Daniel, don’t feel down, most just need the time to know you, and how amazing you are.” Luna stated, now laying down to join the two resting children wrapping her wings around them in a loving embrace.

“D-Do you really think so, a-am I really that amazing?” Daniel asked his mother, his hope beginning to rise in his chest from his mother’s words.

“Of course, you are!”

Both Daniel, and Luna looked surprised at Starry who had a determined look in her still tear swollen eyes looking at Daniel specifically.

“You are amazing, your kind to somepony you only just met, and were willing to protect me. You are amazing, in every sense of the word, and I’m more than glad to have you as my friend.” Starry stated, a small blush playing across her muzzle at her confession.

Daniel was shocked, a much larger blush on his face, as his mother looked at the two young children with a knowing smile on her muzzle as she turned to her son.

“Daniel, this choice is yours, do you want to continue going to school?” Luna asked, worry in her chest as she silently hoped he would say no.

Starry looked at Daniel, hope in her eyes as Daniel stared back his earlier blush diminishing into a light pink hue on his face.

“I-I do, I w-want to go to school again momma.” Daniel said, slight fear in his voice as he wasn’t entirely sure why he agreed to it until he stared into Starry’s eyes, her alluring golden eyes that seem to entrance him every time he gazed at them.

“A-Are you certain, even after what happened today?” Luna asked, voicing the same concerns as Starry when it came to the safety of the one they cared deeply for.

Daniel nodded, a more confident expression on his face from being near Starry.

“Yes momma, while it didn’t end well I learned a lot from my teacher, she was nice and if I didn’t understand Starry would always help me, so I’ll stay so I can stay with Starry.” Daniel stated, causing Starry to blush intensely, and his mother to giggle slightly at his oblivious statement.

“Very well my little one, but I will have you under guard protection to, and from school I will NOT have this happen again especially so far away from the castle where I can’t keep my eye on you.” Luna stated in a protective tone, gently nuzzling Daniel’s head lovingly with tears of a worried mother in her eyes.

Daniel simply hugged his mother, smiling as tears also fell from his cheeks.

Starry was shuffling her hooves a bit, causing both the young prince and his mother to look at her in confusion for a moment, before Luna gave a knowing smile, soon gesturing to the filly to join in the embrace which she quickly, and happily did nuzzling into both Daniel’s and Luna’s chest.

Unbeknownst to the young children she was holding, the lunar princess was squealing like a little filly on Hearts Warming Day, at the adorable connection between her son and the young filly.

*I’ll have to teach him on how to treat a lady properly, after all what kind of a mother would I be without encouraging my sweet boy to make bonds with his friends.* Luna thought excitedly, as both children soon fell asleep in her arms leaving what was a difficult day, on a sweet note.
