S1E7: Sonata Runs The Branch Line

It was a beautiful day in the Island of Sodor. All the engines were doing their jobs to please the Fat Controller. Thomas, the blue tank engine that everyone loved, always runs his branch line with his faithful coaches named Annie and Clarabel. One morning, the Fat Controller arrived at Tidmouth Sheds. Aria and Sonata were there.

"Sonata, Thomas has popped a piston. He has to go to the Steamworks. I want you to run his branch line for today. As for you, Aria, I want you to take me and my mother, Dowager Hatt, to the mainland to have tea with the Great Western chairman."

"Yes, sir," replied both engines. Sir Topham Hatt then left.

"Aria, this is so exciting! I get to pull Tommy's train!" exclaimed Sonata, referring to Thomas's coaches.

"Yeah, whatever. My job is even better than a stupid branch line. They're so boring," replied Aria as she headed for the turntable.

Sonata didn't care what Aria said. She was too excited. Soon, she was at Knapford Yard. Annie and Clarabel were there.

"Another beautiful day on the island, isn't it, Clarabel?" asked Annie.

"Yes, indeed, Annie," replied Clarabel.

Then, Sonata backed up to the two coaches.

"Is that a streamlined engine?" wondered Annie.

"I hope we are not going on another fast adventure," replied Clarabel.

Soon, Sonata was coupled up to Annie and Clarabel. She then set off for Ffarquhar to start her 10:00 run to Knapford.

"Hi! You must be Thomas's coaches, right?" Sonata asked in excitement.

"Yes, indeed," replied Annie.

"I'm Sonata. Who are you, ladies?"

"I'm Clarabel, and she's Annie," replied Clarabel.

"Nice names," complimented Sonata.

Soon, the trio arrived at Ffarquhar. The passengers soon got on board.

"Careful, Sonata, this man needs help on boarding," said Annie.

Then, it was time to go. The guard blew his whistle, and off Sonata went, pulling Annie and Clarabel.

As Sonata chuffed down the tracks, the coaches were giving her warnings.

"Don't go too fast," warned Annie.

"Yes, indeed, don't go too fast," chimed Clarabel.

But Sonata was too excited that she forgot what the coaches had said to her. She began to go faster. And faster.

"Wheeeeee!" exclaimed Sonata in excitement.

"WHOAAAAAAAA!" cried Annie and Clarabel.

Then Sonata passed by Toby, who was taking the workmen to the Ffarquhar Quarry.

"TOBYYYYYYYYYYY!" yelled the coaches.

"Annie? Clarabel?" wondered Toby as he came to a halt.

"I'm guessing Thomas is being cheeky again," replied Henrietta, who is Toby's carriage.

"But that isn't Thomas. That's a streamlined engine running his branch line today," said Toby.

"Oh, right," replied Henrietta.

Sonata sped around curves and past fields. Even stations were missed.

"Yay! I'm pulling Tommy's train! Woo hoo!" cheered Sonata.

Then there was a hiss. Suddenly, Annie and Clarabel's wheels started screeching. Somebody had pulled the emergency cable.

"SONATA, STOP THIS INSTANT!" yelled Annie.

"YOU'RE GOING TO GET OUR WHEELS FLAT!" Clarabel shouted.

Near a junction on the main line, Aria was pulling her coaches, named Diana and Kaarina. Sir Topham Hatt and Dowager Hatt were on board, watching the BBC news on the coaches' built-in TVs.

"This is just in. A contender from Australia that participated in the Great Railway Show visits London," said the reporter on TV, referring to an SAR Class 520 tender engine named Shane.

"It's a great thing to have a GRS member visit the UK," said the Fat Controller.

"Indeed, Topham," replied Dowager.

Then there was trouble. Aria then noticed Sonata around the bend near where the branch line ends at the junction.

"SONATA, LOOK OUT!" shouted Aria as she applied her brakes and blew her whistle.

Sonata gasped, then applied her brakes.

"I can't watch!" cried Annie as she closed her eyes.

"Nor do I!," replied Clarabel, also closing her eyes.

Then, Aria and Sonata then came to a halt, just a few inches from impact. This made Aria very cross.

"Sonata! What do you think you are doing?! You would've got people killed!" Aria scolded her sister.

"She's right, Sonata," said Annie.

"Indeed. Now the Fat Controller won't be pleased," chimed in Clarabel.

Diana and Kaarina looked cross, too. Just then, Sir Topham Hatt came out of Diana, wearing Dowager's hat as a result of the incident.

"What's all the commotion about?" he asked.

"Sonata almost crashed into me, Sir," explained Aria.

"She even skipped stations," said Annie.

The Fat Controller was then cross with Sonata.

"Sonata, you have caused confusion and delay. You almost caused a nasty accident. I want you to go back to the stations you have missed," said Sir Topham Hatt.

"I'm sorry, Sir. I'm also sorry, Annie and Clarabel. Especially you, Aria," said Sonata, looking sad.

Sonata then returned to the stations she had missed. By the time she got to Knapford, it was already 3 in the afternoon. Thomas was there. He had already got his piston fixed.

"Hey, Sonata, how did it go with Annie and Clarabel?" asked Thomas.

"Not so well, Thomas. I was too excited that I went too fast, that I nearly crashed into Aria," explained Sonata. "The Fat Controller was cross with me."

"Don't feel so bad, at least you took care of my branch line and that nobody got hurt," assured Thomas.

Then, Aria arrived at Knapford Station with the Fat Controller and Dowager.

"Sonata, you finished stopping at the missed stations?" he asked.

"Yes, sir. But now that Thomas is fixed, I'll let him do the afternoon run," replied Sonata.

"I've see you learned your lesson. Now you deserve a rest," said Sir Topham Hatt.

"Apology accepted," said Aria. "You're my sister, that's why."

"Aww," replied Sonata.

"At least we didn't have a crash," chimed in Annie.

"Yes, indeed," replied Clarabel.

Everyone then laughed. When an engine gets too overexcited, things can be so confusing. And so, Annie and Clarabel were back to being pulled by Thomas.

The end.
