Speeding Ticket

by Feeling Grand

Those Darn Wonderbolts!

She flew like there was no tomorrow.

A lightning bolt of bright rainbow colours whooshed behind her tail. Her wings flapped against the air and brought her higher and higher up into the sky.

She wanted to break through the atmosphere if she could, but that always zoomed passed her mind when she was in this mode.

No, she just wanted to break through all sound itself.

Keep her promise to herself, make it on time... just make it.

She shot faster forward, a bullet not even half her speed. A rainboom blasted against the night sky, lighting it up and little fillies and colts below watched in amazement.

She kept going. Maybe, if she tried... she could go faster...

For time was slipping by, and in this state... it was almost like she could slow it down.

Though she knew that was thee impossible.

Her wings pounded harder and harder against the air underneath them. Her eyes were so used to the howling wind whipping into them, that the pegasus knew she had built up quite a resistance to it over the years.

Suddenly she heard it... for the first time.

A beeping.

She turned around, and saw the pegasai police brigade were on her tail.

The main leader yelled.

“SLOW DOWN!!”

Rainbow’s eyes widened. What-? When-? When was there police pegasai in Ponyville?? And since when had she ever gotten a speeding ticket.

“I CAN’T!!” she yelled, as she knew that when she was in this mode she had to keep going.

Especially when she was needed.

But she suddenly realized... that in her bullet like flying dash, she was no longer surrounded by cottages and the crystal castle... but by sky scrapers... high buildings.

Wait... had she just suddenly arrived in Manehattan?

She exploded forth, doing a quick dive upwards and leaving the police to crash into each other at the spot of her turn.

They glared up watching her zoom back the other way and followed quickly, the lights on their side belts blinking and the beeping, getting louder and louder.

Rainbow swallowed, petrified. This was serious... but, but how did she not look where she was going?

Another rainboom blasted forth from her, as she sped up her pace, and dived faster through the dark sky. City lights lit up all around.

She suddenly blinked her eyes, seeing police just up ahead, and dropped, ducking them and swooping beneath their hoofs.

However what she didn’t know was that she had two geen eyes on her, as a stallion watched, and shook his head.

He dashed forward, following the pegasus, before he spread his very light coloured slightly blue tinged wings upwards and hit the sky, just touching base with her in her speed.

Rainbow turned her eyes to look at him quickly, and blinked them a few times, baffled.

“Soarin?!”

“Why are you speeding in the city?” he asked her with a concerned voice. “That’s not Wonderbolt behaviour.”

“I didn’t realize I was in the damn city!” Rainbow only yelled back in defence. Her breath was steady, but Soarin was panting a little. For with even his own fitness, he still found it hard to keep pace with this pony sometimes.

“Well, I can hear the police.” he said, worried, as he looked back at the pegasai that were on her tail.

“Great! Now we have two speedsters!” the chief yelled through a megaphone and Soarin turned his worried green eyes back to the zooming blue pegasus beside him. He knew Rainbow was not going to stop. She probably saw herself in the right.

He sighed.

“Turn left ahead, there’s a back alley which is too narrow for them to follow you. I’ll keep up the chase on me.”

Rainbow looked at him surprised. She saw his steady gaze, and his firm nod and she just beamed a happy relieved smile.

She swooshed in a left curve, flying sideways as she reached the alley that was so small, she could hear one of the police yell.

“Hey! Where did she go!!”

Rainbow stopped her flight for a second, hiding in the dark, just between two buildings only a few inches apart, before she heard the yell.

“Did anypony get a mug shot of that pegasus?”

She hovered there, panting, before she saw a window open to the side of her, as an elderly pony looked out confused.

“Oh... who is there...?” she asked in a weak tired voice, and Rainbow only stared into the apartment.

She dived in, shocking the mare, and flew to the door, smashing it opened. She flew against the next door that was on the otherside of the hallway, colliding with that too and exploding it to pieces till she crashed through the next window of the other side of the apartment block and swooped down to the ground.

She quickly bought a hat, coat and glasses, tossing the bits to the stallion before she shot to the sky again, but kept a much slower pace... much to her irritation.

It took an hour till she was out of the city... with air traffic and all, and once she saw the country grass just below her hoofs, she blasted forward... losing all reservations as she smashed through the air and another rainboom hit the sky.

And then another, and one more...

Three in a row, and she just roared out.

“YES!!”

Before remembering... she still needed to be somewhere... as all this time her flank had been vibrating with a glowing cutiemark.

She could see before her, the town of Ponyville reach nearer and nearer, and she just smiled widely. She swooshed passed the buildings, making them blow almost over from the gust of wind that blew behind her.

She reached the castle at last and landed on her seat around the cutiemap.

“WHAT IS IT!!” Rainbow yelled, nearly out of breath. Not from exhaustion that should have been from a flight no pony in their right mind would make. But from all the exhausting delays that kept getting in her way.

Twilight and Starlight Glimmer were there, looking at Rainbow’s cutiemark signal floating around a city far enough away from here and Twilight said.

“Looks like you are needed in Manehattan for a friendship lesson!”

Rainbow’s mouth would’ve dropped off her in that second if it could... but it didn’t and she only yelled.

“WHAT!!”

“Yep, you better hurry on your way.”

She grumbled annoyed, getting up and blasting back off from the ground into the air.

“Wow, “ Twilight just giggled, “That was quick.”

When Rainbow reached the city, her outfit having flown off her in her trip to Ponyville... all she saw waiting for her was a group of police ponies.

Their hoofs were folded, and their eyes were glaring.

“Heh, heh...”

It wasn’t till seconds later that Rainbow found herself in a prison cell with Soarin for the night and he said nervously.

“I hope this doesn’t go on record...”

“I think I know the friendship lesson... and I think it's actually for me...”

Her cutiemark began to vibrate as Rainbow simply admitted.

“If you break a crime... you need to pay for it.”

“Couldn’t it be...” Soarin added on quickly, “Don’t leave your friends hanging?”

“No...” Rainbow said on, thinking some more... “Maybe its, apologize to ponies for destroying property."

The two tried to guess what it was all night long, and when the final guess came out, dawn was approaching.

“How about this?” Soarin said, thinking hard and finally giving it his last shot, “Obey the law?”

Finally her flank stopped glowing and the police opened the metal bars, pulling the gate opened and letting the two out.

“Okay, your time is up.”

“THANK CELESTIA!” Rainbow just cooed, and walked in exhausted steps out of the prison cell. She looked back to see Soarin had fallen asleep on the ground just before he could step out, and Rainbow yawned.

She walked back to the cell, confusing the warden, shutting the gate and saying sleepily.

“Just give us another eight hours...”

She smiled sleepily as she curled up on the bench and said with eyes drifting off to sleep.

“We haven’t learnt our lesson yet...”
