Names, Names, Names

Girls, just to let you know two things:

There’s a storm round the Crystal Empire, so there won’t be any aethernet from there for a while. The storm is not Windigo created, so you can relax. They are doing fine :)

Also, LyraHands is in hospital, expecting the foals any day now. Since you see me calm, you can guess that it’s not literally any day. Her parents decided it was better that she spend a while there to get used to her surroundings, and for the doctors to get used to her. The next time you hear from her will be after the event :)

Bob

@Bob: Did you pick names yet?

MixaMax

Hmm what would Danny choose? You know, I think it would be hilarious if you named the foal Poseidon if it’s a colt. Just think about it: Ponies walking in the part with their foals, enjoying the fine afternoon... suddenly Lyra shouts “Poseidon! Come back here this instant!” I guaranteed that it will be pretty clear who’s a Nightling and who not :P

RRBB

Hmm, I’m curious what names would humans use? I mean we have a pretty large list of names from MC, but what's the logic? Just random combinations of sounds?

PaintDrop

Seems like. The same as centaur names (and yes, I’m shocked I’m using this example unironically and without any hidden plan).

From what I could tell it’s the sound that determines if it’s a good name or not. Oh, and it absolutely must be deprived of meaning. Of course, I know that lots of authors sneak in pony names (Sunny, Rain, Wind, Cloud...). I wouldn’t say this is wrong in itself. After all, even names with meaning are composed of sounds, but for really good and authentic names I’d recommend using the following principle:

Syllable-syllable with double consonant-vowel for females
Syllable-vowel-syllable with double consonant for males

Rebecca, Volarry, Estrella (example female names)
Joanacc, Morigann, Kelakett (examples of male names)

As you can see they are very human sounding. And of course you can mix things up a bit based on taste:

Dann-y for a male name
Bell-u-cio for a male name
A-ten-a for a female name

Your welcome!

MightyDragon

@MightyDragon: nice, though I somehow doubt that Lyra would use this method to pick a name :) Maybe I’ll write a few shorts using your method until I’m a mother :)

Bob

Hmm... miracles never cease! @MightyDragon actually did something useful! And no, that won’t get you automatic story approval! Just learn to write! How hard can it be? There are literally schoolfoals who’ve managed since the site started!

I used a slightly different method for coming up with names, but it’s sort of embarrassing and I’m not sure I’ll share it. Or maybe I will? :P (Nah!)

RRBB

I use this:

First syllable of your first name, first syllable of your second name, last syllable of your last name :) It doesn’t always work, but is funny :D

Swebly :P

SweetStuff

@SweetStuff: you’re such a cheat! Why did you even bother with the explanation!

Diatirand

Lol! That sounds so male! Actually yours does too! Wow, you just discovered an easy way to create human personas... no way this will be abused. :P

Distak (wow! It always works!)

RRBB

My darlings, I don’t want to alarm anypony, but maybe use MightyDragon’s method instead? As fun as it is to have your own personalized human name, using your own to create it is dangerously close to revealing you rename, and sometimes that isn’t desirable.

Furthermore, definitely avoid using that method to transform the names of friends.

Grace

@SweetStuff: nice try, but I I experimented with that and found the names often aren’t pretty good. My method is scientifically the best there is (I dare someone prove me wrong! If anything I’d be really impressed.)

MightyDragon

@Bob: okay, here’s a silly question. What caused the storm? I was suppose to receive a lot of mail scrolls from there today.

EverSpike

@EverSpike: just you standard storm from the frozen north :) They do happen to occur every now and again. :)

@Grace: I absolutely agree, and we should remember that as popular as MC is becoming, there are still Nightlings who wish it not be known they are into human fiction.

That said. I think Lyra would appreciate having a human name :)

Lyharra... that actually sounds quite nice. (And no, such a name won’t even be considered!)

Bob

I just invent names on the spot. When I think of a character I think of his features then imagine a tune that would describe them. More often than not it’s a quick process and, for me, much more involved than following formulas.

No offense, MightyDragon, but it sounds a bit too much like rolling dice, than putting any effort into developing the character. Keep in mind that it is entirely my personally opinion. Maybe others disagree.

Jade

@Jade: kisses! How are things there? Did the Manhattan mares stop whistling at you, or must I go there?

MixaMax

Yeah, they should know better! It’s been mentioned on the site lots of times!

DON’T HIT ON JADE ... unless you’re AwesomePony :P

Feather

@Feather: she’s on patrol right now, but I promise I’ll share her reaction once she reads this :P Not that there’s any doubt what it would be :) (we are so evil)

Brush

Did you know that human names actually do have meanings? The majority of human names are based on words that from Old Human of various regions. After centuries the original meaning of most of them has been forgotten making them seem like a random combination of sounds.

Also, did you know that humans almost always keep their parent’s names? Danny Williams is Williams because that is the name of his family and not because he was given it at birth.

Speculator7

It’s me! Spike Sparkle! Also known as Spispak! :D

@Bob: hmm, okay :)

EverSpike

@EverSpike: you’re so silly :) Never change :D
