Holding Onto You

Chapter Twelve: Playgrounds and Swingsets

‘Mmm.” Scootaloo sounded, quietly nomming her colourful rubbery sparkle keys, her mind curiously aimed towards evaluating the various brick textures and cracks in the pavement that surrounded her. Taking a deep breath in and out, she failed to even noticed the growing spots of drool forming on the corner of her lips.

Laying back in her cushy car seat, she couldn’t help but feel strangely light headed as she was driven closer to her destination. She was feeling awful hungry after all.

“Heh, I think next time we might want to head out a teensy bit earlier.” Fluttershy said, curiously peeking her head up as she found the two a spot in the restaurant’s parking lot. “I don’t get hungry very often. So if my tummy is rumbling I can only imagine what a little one like yourself’s feels like. Let alone the fact you- well, you know.”

“Heh, poopied!” Scootaloo giggled, playfully bouncing up and down in her padded seat. Happy to come off as childish as possible.

The aunt nodded her head. “Yes, heh. You certainly did do that.” Fluttershy giggled, using her hand to disengage her car and undo her seat belt. Stepping out of her car, she went to the back seat to tend to her little one. Being the good girl, Scootaloo simply sat back in her car seat and let her aunt fiddle with her safety belt herself.

“Alright, pumpkin. You can climb out now- just be careful.” Fluttershy mused, hunkering herself over the car door’s opening defensively so her little one couldn’t ‘fall out’ by accident.

With one hand still very occupied keeping her teething rings up to her mouth, Scootaloo very slowly got on her knees, turned around to face her high chair, then climbed off backwards.

Fluttershy reached her hand out and grabbed her little one’s one free hand. “Heh, are your chewy rings that nommy- or are you just hungry?” she teased, slumping her niece’s diaper bag over her shoulder as she walked down the asphalt parking lot.

Scootaloo stared blanky for a second as she was tugged along, then a response came to mind. “Heh, both!” She chirped, with a snide smile.

“Hehe, silly girl.” Fluttershy smiled, walking the girl into the front door of the restaurant. “So lovey, what kind of meal do want for lunch? A burger, chicken nuggets, something vegetarian?”

Tilting her head to the side, Scootaloo looked up at the big colorful menu-board that advertised the restaurant’s kid’s meals. “Uh… chicken nuggets… and a coke!” she exclaimed, rather happily.

Fluttershy nodded in confirmation as she approached the granite counter. In front of her stood a perky teenage girl- not much older than Scootaloo- staring at her with a smile. “Hello. Could I have one number six with a coke and a children’s number three with a small coke?”

“Surrrrrre!” The girl mused, staring down at her register and poking it with her finger. “Alrighty- anything else?” She asked, looking back up at Fluttershy.

“No, that fine.” Fluttershy replied, twisted her hip. Unable to get to her purse with Scootaloo’s bag over her should, she it on the counter, unzipped it, and pulled out some loose cash.

The counter girl wrinkled her nose, a little off-taken by the smell of baby powder permeating from the diaper bag. She raised an eyebrow, spotting a diaper’s colourful cartoonish backing and peaked over at the child.

Scootaloo stood, idly leaning against her aunt’s side. She continued to chew at a her sparkly purple ring as she stared back at the counter girl. Despite a fair bit of droll leaking down the side of her mouth, she didn’t seem to emote any more or less.

Fluttershy smiled, patting her little one’s back. Looking up at the cashier, she handed the counter girl the money she owed, “Thank you. Keep the change.”

Passively, the counter girl nodded her head and stood back as she watched Fluttershy tuck her purse back into the bag and drag it and the girl away to a table.

“Heh, you really like your keys don’t you Scoots?” Fluttershy asked, a little amused as she walked over to two nearby trash bins. She picked up a red plastic booster seat.

“Mmmhmm.” Scootaloo moaned, continuing to follow her aunt over to a nearby bench seat. She watched as Fluttershy set down her diaper bag on the right side of the booth, then set down booster on the opposite side. Without a word of warning, she was hoisted into the air and set on the red plastic booster.

Taking a seat herself, Fluttershy rather lazily rested her elbows on her table and held her chin with her two hands. “Heh, keep it up and you’re gonna chew through the thing.” She teased, admiring the way Scootaloo bite at her rings like a puppy with a chew toy, “Gosh- you’re drooling an awful lot you know?”

Scootaloo paused a moment and pulled the rubber toy out of her mouth, then looked down- only to find there was a decent wet spot on the blouse of her sun suit. “Oh, heh. Oopsie.” She blushed.

“Heh, you’re fine dear.” Fluttershy smiled, turning to her side. Digging into her little one’s diaper bag, she pulled a big white bib a pink trim.

Smirking, the child set down her chew toy on the restaurant table and pouted. “Wha? I dunno needa bib. I’m notta messy eater.”

“Oh I know you’re not a messy eater dear.” Fluttershy cooed, leaning forward in her seat. Working diligently with her long nimble fingers, she wrapped the bib’s fabric on the other side of her neck and gently buttoned it closed.

Scootaloo looked down at her chest, a little flustered at image of little colourful chirping birds covering a decent portion of her tummy. “Mmm, I’m too old to be wearing a bib.” She whined, shyly.

Standing up from her seat, Fluttershy rolled her eyes. “Heh, the BIB is too much for you? You’re silly dear.” She said, trailing away.

Looking around the restaurant, the child smirked a little as she saw a whole selection of people scattered about, seemingly occupied with eating their foot in their sterile little environments. Whether it be a bench made of plastic or a wooden formica chair, everyone seemed so busy consuming that they barely lifted their heads.

“Alright sugar. I got our food.” Fluttershy chirped, walking over with all their assorted food on her tray.

Scootaloo patiently waited for her aunty to grab her sister then picked up the red cardboard box with all of her chicken nuggets in it. Curiously, she popped it opened and looked at the breading. Something about the way it glistened with oil seeping from its pours made her feel a little ‘off’.

“Is everything alright pumpkin?” Fluttershy questioned, calmly nomming her chicken sandwich; her crystal like aqua eyes glistening as she stirred concerned.

“Heh, nah.” Scootaloo grinned a little, then took a bite of her chicken nugget. More or less working around the big bib fastened around her neck, she calmly opened a pack of ketchup and used that dip her nuggest in.

Turning her head, she looked out of the big glass windows at the townscape. Nothing was really going on outside. It was just the same red and grey brick structures, sectioned off by sidewalks, with the sight of trees and the over-cast sky looming in the background.

Fluttershy contently chewed her sandwich for just while longer, then picked up her napkin. Leaning over, she carefully wiped the child’s face. “Heh, you had a little bit of ketchup on your cheek… and also some drool.”

The child flashed a sheepish grin at Fluttershy. “I’m not trying to be that messy, t-b-h.” She panned, picking up another chicken nugget. Dipping it in her ketchup, she brought it up to her lips. Swallowing, she reached over with both of her hands and picked up her small coke.

Finishing up her sandwich, Fluttershy leaned back in her seat a little. “Oh boy, I didn’t even think about your drink.”

Scootaloo continued to suckle at the straw, then peaked down at the small cup. Looking back at her aunt, she puckered her eyebrows.

“Coke has caffeine in it love- not much, but some.” The women smiled, parting her long pink hair from her face. Contently, she picked up her own soda took a small sip of it, letting the auburn beverage coat her tongue and run down her throat. “I suppose the energy crash will help you go beddie-bye for your nap though. Maybe we could stop by a park or something on the way back too.”

Smiling a little, Scootaloo nodded her head. “Eek. The part sounds like fun. Although, it’s kinda looking a little cloudy outside.”

“Ooh, is it?” Fluttershy questioned, turning her head to look out of the window. “Well, it sounds like we outta head on way if we wanna get some play time in. Come on Scoots-“ She paused, grabbing the diaper bag and slumping it over her shoulder. “grab your soda and follow me.”

Crawling off her booster seat and bench, the child idly swung her legs over the side and hopped onto her well cushioned trainers. “Woah.” She sounded, stumbling in place before rebalancing herself by grabbing her aunt’s hand. “Ready!”

***

Quietly, the child idly waddled behind her aunt as she was gently tugged by the hand. All around, monstorously high bushy green trees and prickly pines surrounded the nicely paved road that surrounded her. In front of her was her aunt, standing tail with a well-fitting casual yellow spring dress and a stride to her step. Also in the distance, was a very new and slightly bizarrely configured colourful playground and swing set that sat in front of one story brick building.

“Heh, are you excited to go swinging baby?” Fluttershy asked, her wooden flip flops clapping against the hard-concrete pavement as she walked along.

Scootaloo looked up at her aunt with a big grin on her face and nodded. She couldn’t help but feel a little tense. Her sun suit’s flurry of purple and orange ruffles may have covered her tushie well. But the upper halves’ flat white material offered barely any protection from the increasingly cooler breeze; let alone the fact that it bared no sleeves.

Toddling along in the way her concealed diaper made her, the child very cautiously reached her free hand over her other shoulder and rubbed it as she approached the chalky brown wood-chunks that coated the playground’s floor.

“Heh, wow. Looks like we have the playground almost too ourselves.” Fluttershy mused, helping her little one step over the place’s surrounding boarder.

“Hehe, yeah. Except for that guy!” She smiled, pointing at a man in a blue jogging suit who was running the path surrounding them.

Fluttershy nodded. “Now how about you climb up the jungle gym and show me how fast you can go down the slide.” She challenged her little one, walking over to big blue plastic slide. She waited for a second, looking up at the red-metal frame of the contraption for several seconds. Hearing her niece’s sneakers squeak in the distance she readied her hands.

Sure enough, Scootaloo came sliding down fast pace given the situation. Fluttershy gave herself enough to room to grab her niece’s shoulders as she flowed off the hunk of slipper plastic.

Scootaloo, being the off-balance pseudo-toddler she was landed on her feet, but then fell back with a loud ‘woah!’ and the crash of her ruffled butt on the soft wooden chunks below her.

“Heh, are you alright sweetie butt?” Fluttershy asked, gently rubbing her little one’s thinny veiled butt.

Being her pain threshold was a little bit denser than an actual toddler the girl frowned but nodded. “I scrapped my calf.” She confessed, continuing to sit on the piece of earth with arms firmly tucked underneath each other.

“Awe, poor baby.” The aunt cooed, leaning down and giving the girl a little peck on her thick purple head of hair.

“I amma poor baby.” Scootaloo moaned, leaning over on her knees. Using both her hands, she pushed herself up and kept herself propped- albeit uncomfortably- sat her diapered tush on her bare calves.

Fluttershy smirked a bit, going the extra distance to pick her little one up by her bare underarms. “Ooh, poor thing.” She smiled, bringing her little one up against her chest.

Instinctively, the girl wrapped her arms around her aunt’s neck and her legs around her waist, respectively.

Not wanting to slow her little one’s fun, she began pacing over to the ‘younger’ side of the yard’s playsets. “Heh, it’s a really good thing we didn’t take you to the big girl park.” She smiled, looking down at the boo-boo on the side of her niece’s leg. “I mean, if you did that to yourself on a nursery school slide. I’d hate to imagine what’d happen to you if we got you in some real danger.” She teased.

“Heyyy!” Scootaloo fussed, blowing a raspberry at her aunt. “It’s not my fault these diapers are a lie. ‘Feels like real underwear’ my ass.”

Fluttershy held back her urge to giggle, as she carried her little one over to a set of barnyard themed spring-riders. “Heh, one- watch your language dear. ‘Ass’ isn’t really okay for a little one to say. Two- you’re thinking of pullups dear. Three- do you wanna try the moo cow or the bunny?” she asked, gesturing at a section of four individual pieces of play equipment.

Scootaloo shook her head. “Nah, they just give me the creeps.” She said, pointing over at a white-metal swing set. “Can I ride on the swing though?”

“Well of course lovey.” The aunt replied, changing her direction. Smirking a little, she uncomfortably kicked her foot a little, dislodging a stuck piece of wood.

Patiently, Scootaloo continued to cling onto her aunt. But, a few seconds later she was being carried to the right-side of the swing set; the side with the special need and baby swings. Pouting she whined. “Wait. But, I wanna ride on a big girl swing! It’s like the one big girl thingy I like!”

“Oh hush.” Fluttershy interjected, shutting down her nieces pleads on the spot. “You might be a big girl, but you’re not going to get very high up with those little legs of yours.” She said, continuing to carry her right-ward.

To Scootaloo’s surprise, her aunt actually bypassed the baby swings, instead stopping in front of a rather cumbersome blue-chair looking device.

“Heh, ugh…” Fluttershy grunted, lifting her little one in the air just high enough to comfortably set her in the contraption. Grabbing the safety belt from underneath her child’s diapered backside, she pulled it out and started hooking together the five-point harness.

“Wait-wha?” the child questioned, tilting her head downwards looking at the contraption that was holding her up in the air.

Fluttershy smiled, walking behind the swing and giving it a tinsy push. “Heh, you thought I was gonna plop you down in one of the baby swings, didn’t you?”

Scootaloo looked over at the hanging basic black seats an nodded. “Yeah, what gives?” She asked, a little amazed at sense of weightlessness the swing gave her.

Continuing to idly push the girl, the aunt looked up at the quickly cloudy sky. “Ooh, well for as small as you are- especially for a girl your age- you still definetly aren’t a baby dear.” She smiled, looking back down at her crown of her little girl’s hair. “Of course, that’s not to say I wouldn’t stick you in one if I got the chance. But, unlike the stuff we bought for your nursery, a regular baby swing won’t cut it. Even if we could get you in with a tight squeeze, we’d probably end up with the fire department cutting you out with a pair of bolt cutters. Hehe.”

“Yeah I guesss!” Scootaloo dead panned, tilting her head back to look at the sky. “I still don’t think I should have ended up with the special swing though.” She said, gazing up at the sky. The clouds were dense enough that she didn’t even have to shutter her eyes. She crossed her arms over her tummy, feeling a little cold in her seat.

“Heh, well you are a special girl with special needs dear.” Fluttershy teased, continuing to idly push her child. “Of course, that’s perfectly alright though. It’s healthy for you to move at your own pace.”

Rolling her eyes, Scootaloo loosened her posture as she sat back in her seat. She remained quiet, contemplating her aunt’s words as she held her tummy. Sure, it might have been cold, but as long as she kept still she felt warm. She rested her head on her shoulder and closed her eyes, enjoying the sensation the flight like sensation.

“Heh, ooh you’re such a cute girl…” Fluttershy cooed, noticing her little one’s eyes flutter open and close like she was struggling to stay awake. Noticing that the swing was heading back her direction, she gently brought it halt with her hand, deciding to take control of its movements with her own hand. “Just listen to the wispy wind and feel the sunshine on your cheeks.” She continued to whisper.

Loosing notability of her surroundings, Scootaloo passed out.

In what seemed like mere flickers of time, the girl found herself idly clung up to her aunt, then she was a little futher along with the sky darker and her surroundings drenched in rain, then much much later she found herself especially cold sitting tilted back in her car seat.

“Huh?” She questioned, balling up her fist and rubbing her eyes.

“Ooh baby, you finally woke up.” Fluttershy smirked, too focused on the rode in front of her to switch focus to her back seat. All around her, the formerly idle clouds in the sky had burst and she found herself and her baby surrounded by the cold pitter-patter of wet summer afternoon. “You just a little dizzy spell, no biggy.” She added causally.

Scootaloo took a deep breath, but smirked a little at a rather unbearable smell that seemed to surround her. Looking down at her crouch, her heart practically skipped a beat. While her sun suit did a good job obscuring any visual conformation, the odor was more than enough to confirm her fears. She pooped herself. “Mnnnnn.” She whined loudly, tearing up as her mind began to consume itself in patronizing thoughts.

Fluttershy, being the studious driver she was, ignored the moaning for a hot minute as she continued to swarve about the twisty backwoods roads. Coming to a stop sign a short distance from her house, she quickly turned around and grabbed a nearby pacifier off the seat next to her niece.

“Ooh, don’t be scared love.” Fluttershy coddled the girl, sticking the white pacifier’s nipple into her mouth. Glazing the rubber with her tongue, she wiped the spit off on her blouse and offered it to the girl, “Here you go, here’s your binky. Don’t worry Scootaloo. I know the storm is scary, but there’s nothing that Mommashy can’t handle.”

The child quieted her sobbing and looked down at the beacon of babyhood that was a pacifier. Reluctantly, she picked it up by its ring and stuck it in her mouth, then leaned back into the cozy cushions of her car seat.

A loud crack of thunder roared through the sky, which left Fluttershy with a nervous smirk on her face. Turning back to face the road she straightened her posture as she turned onto the road home. “Don’t worry pumpkin, we’ll be safe inside soon.”

Scootaloo took a little deep breath, but sucked it up by the time she and her caretaker found their way back to the house. Taking a passive role in the situation, Scootaloo simply continued to sulk in her uncomfortably messy sea as she watched the car turn into her aunt’s driveway and come to a complete stop.

Disengaging the keyes from the car, Fluttershy put her gear in break then hopped out of the car.

Scootaloo idly looked down at the harness that graced her chest. She reached down and began fiddling with safety mechanism, in an attempt to speed the process up for her aunt and herself.

“Ooh, Scootaloo.” Fluttershy cooed, a little panicked over her little one’s fit. Genuinely believing the girl was upset over the thunderstorm she reached in with her big white hands. “Ooh, let aunt Fluttershy get that for you.”

Flinching a little, the child held her hands right up to her chest as her aunt dealt with her seat’s safety harness. Suprisingly, she was yanked right up from her car seat and into her aunt’s wet rain covered embrace.

“Don’t worry baby…” Fluttershy cooed, slowly pushing the car door shut. “there’s nothing to fear about a little rain and thunder. Your aunty Fluttershy will keep you warm and safe.” She sheepishly reassured the child, taking quick unorthodox steps to her cottage’s front door.

Scootaloo meanwhile, buried her face in her aunt’s shoulder, a little impatient with the sensation of raindrops wetting down her hair, skin, and the fabric of her sun suit. Taking a deep breath, the child clung to her aunt to keep herself from moaning in frustration. She was annoyed. She needed a change AND she was wet.

Thankfully, with her Aunt’s agility, the two made it to the door with relative ease. Sure, Fluttershy accidentally left her niece’s diaper bag in the car. But, with how rainy it was, it wasn’t like they’d need it soon anyway.
