A day in the Life of Twilight Sparkle

Chapter 1

As the sun poured through the window of her loft Twilight Sparkle threw back her covers and sighed. She rolled out of bed and stretched her back, after several audible pops Twilight sighed and headed for the window She went to the window and opened the curtains letting Celestias’ sun fill her room and warm her coat. “Another beautiful day in Equestria.” Twilight turned from the window and trotted over and stood before the mirror on top of her dresser. She sparked her horn and her hair brush rose from its place in a lavender glow. She ran the brush through her mane. She looked in the mirror and made sure every hair of her Purple mane was in its proper place, but saw that her mane was parting wrong around her horn. Instead of her mane parting next to the pink stripe; it was going through the stripe. Twilight huffed and fixed her part. She gently sat her brush down and rolled her head in front of the mirror. “Perfect.” She turned from the dresser and went to the bedroom door and opened it. As she did the smell of haybacon and waffles wafted in from downstairs. “Oh!! Spike must have gotten up early today.” The thought of her number one assistant put a smile on her face as she trotted down the stairs.

Upon entering the downstairs library of her home she noticed that Spike had indeed been up for sometime as the cleaning was already done and the morning paper was lying on the Coffee table. She could hear the young dragon humming away over the sounds of breakfast as he worked in the kitchen, humming an unfamiliar tune. She slowed her trot to a leisurely pace as she entered the Kitchen. “Good morning Spike.”

Spike almost jumped out of his scales at the greeting, he turned slowly his cheeks a bright red and a sheepish grin plastered on his face. “G.. Good morning Twilight. Heh, um guess I didn't hear you come in.” Twilight covered her muzzle with a hoof to hide her grin, but from the look on Spikes face she was not hiding it well. “Did you sleep well Twilight?”

“I slept grrreat,  what about you?”

“I slept fine, but since I went to bed so early last night I woke up around four and couldn't go back to sleep. So,” He continued as he stepped off a stool, pan of haybacon in hand and went over to the counter and slid the still sizzling strips onto a plate. “instead of of just lying in my basket I decided to get up and start on my chores.”

As Spike put the finishing touches on Breakfast Twilight used her magic to set the table. Two places one for her and one for Spike. Once the young drake had finished Twilight levitated two plates over to the table, one for her which contained two waffles slathered in butter and and maple syrup and four strips of haybacon and the second for Spike which had a waffle with green emerald shards protruding from it and four more strips of haybacon. Being a Dragon Spike didn't have the same nutritional needs as ponies he only had to eat gemstones but having grown up around ponies his whole life he liked to eat like they do because he enjoyed it and it was something he could share with his friends.

As the plates settled on the table they each pulled up a chair and went to work on their breakfast. It was quiet as they began eating but Spike broke the silence with a question. “So what's on the agenda for today Twilight.”

Twilight checked the clock on the wall and found that it was nearing eight O'Clock. “Well, we could use a few things from the market and...” Now it was Twilight's turn to smile sheepishly. “I don't know what else I can't remember what day it is.”

Spike frowned. “For somepony as smart as you are, you can be a bit scatterbrained sometimes. But don't worry your Number One Assistant has you covered it's Wednesday.”

“Oh, good, thank you Spike.” She thought for a moment. “We need to go by Quills and Sofas to pick up a shipment of Quills... and that's it apart from opening the library in a few minutes we don't have anything else to do. So how are you going to spend your day?”

“Well since Applebucking season is over and the Apples have finished their harvest, Big Mac and I were gonna hangout, the Canterlot hoofball team is having their spring training camp in Ponyville this year and Big Mac got us tickets.”

“That sounds fun. I hope you have a good time and tell Big Mac I said hello.”

“I will Twilight,” He looked at the clock and jumped. “Oh man I'm supposed to meet him at town hall at eight. I gotta run.”

“Ok Spike just turn the closed sign to open as you leave.”

“I will, see ya later Twilight.” And with a puff of smoke the young dragon was gone.

Twilight smiled and set to the task of cleaning up breakfast.

With the dishes clean and put away Twilight went into the library and walked to the front door. She pulled it open to make sure Spike had changed the sign, and of course he had. It was a beautiful day out so Twilight propped her door open with a rock. She took in the scene outside her door; ponies were out and about going about their lives The market was just opening; all the stalls were set up and ponies were beginning to show up. The Mayor and her aids were walking away from town hall no doubt to check on something important.

“Good morning Twilight!”

Twilight shifted her gaze to see two mares approaching her. One was a mint coated and white maned Unicorn and the other had a Beige coat with a mane of dark blue with a rose pink streak.

“Good morning Lyra, BonBon, what can I do for you on this fine day?”

“I was wondering,” Lyra began. “if you had any new ancient history or anthropology books?”

Twilight smiled. “Still on the Human hunt aye. Well I don't have anything new in those two genres but we did just get a new book of ancient myths and legends. It had something in it about creatures that walked on two legs, I can't say anymore than that though I haven't gotten around to actually reading it yet, just skimmed the pages while I was putting it on the shelves. Interested?”

A large smile appeared on Lyra's face and she nodded. “Sure am.”

Twilight motioned them inside. Please follow me.” She led the two mares inside and had them sit on the couch in the reading area.

“If you'll wait just a moment I'll fetch your book.” She turned from the two and headed deeper into the library until she reached the Folktales section. She walked right to where the book should be and used her magic to pull it from the shelf. “Right where it should be.” The book floated beside her all the way back into the reading area. Lyra and BonBon stood as she returned. “Here you are Ms. Heartstrings one book on myths and folktales. I know first hand how sometimes these old tales have a shred of truth to them.

“Yeah, I still have nightmares about Nightmare moon.” BonBon said.

“How is Princess Luna doing these days Twi? I haven't seen or even heard anything about her since the celebration Princess Celestia held in Ponyville when you lot freed her from Nightmare moon's control.”

Twilight flinched she was not sure how she should respond. She did not know exactly what Celestia wanted the rest of Equestria to know about her sister. “Um.. well, she is doing alright, she is still acclimating herself. Alot has changed in Equestria over the last thousand years.” She plastered a smile on her face. She got a strange look from BonBon but Lyra was already cracking open her book.

“I bet, it will probably take her a while to get used to all the new technology that's been developed over that time.” Lyra added.

“And society at large has changed a lot over the years as well.” BonBon said.

“Alright well, Lyra let's get you checked out.” She led the two over to the checkout desk and lyra filled out the card in the book and gave it to Twilight.

“All done. It's two weeks to return it right?”

“Sure is.”

“Ok Twilight, I'll have it back in time don't you worry.”

BonBon sighed. “Lyra, you haven't returned a library book in time since I've known you. Don't forget before Twilight took over the library you had been barred from checking out books.”

Lyra dropped her head laying it on the book held in her telekinesis. “I know,” She perked up and threw a foreleg around BonBons neck. “but that's what I've got you for Bon, you keep me straight and make sure I honor my commitments.”

BonBon blushed the color of her cheeks in bright contrast to her beige coat. “Oh you,” She put her right foreleg around Lyra and hugged her. “you always know just what to say.”

Twilight just grinned as she watched the two ponies exit the library.
========================================================

Around noon Twilight decided to close the library so she could have lunch. As she walked a shadow passed overhead. She looked up to see a trail of rainbow color zipping through the sky.

“Rainbow must have just woken up from her nap.” She just watched as the rainbow blur sped through the sky doing flips loop de loops and all kinds of acrobatics. When she could tell the show was winding down she waved into the air and called “Hey Rainbow Dash!!” The multi colored blur disappeared for an instant before coming straight toward her. Finally the multi colored trail disappeared to reveal a Cyan coated Pegasus with a striking rainbow colored mane and tail.

“Hey Twilight! What's up?”

“Not much Rainbow just headed to get some lunch. Wanna come?”

“Sure Twi, where we headin?”

“I was just heading to Hayburger.”

“Alright, I could go for a hayburger with cheese and some hay fries.”

As Twilight walked Dash flew next to her, as they passed through the market they waved at Applejack and Applebloom, who were operating the Apple family's market cart, Twilight also spotted a few ponies she knew who came into the library often including. “Hi Cheerilee.”

An Earth Pony mare with a Magenta coat and two toned pink mane turned to face them. “Oh hello Twilight, Rainbow Dash..”

“Hey teach you looking forward to school starting up in a few weeks?”

“I am. It's always nice getting back in the classroom and getting to be around the fillies and colts teaching them new things I do enjoy it so.”

“I understand that feeling Cheerilee I love seeing the Foals faces when they find a book to read.”

“Boring,” Dash chimed up. “I hated school; I just wanted to fly I knew I needed to practice as much as possible so I could join the Wonderbolts.”

“I know Dash, and that's why you need me to help you do your taxes every year.” Twilight said with a smirk.

Dash stuck her tongue out at Twilight. “Whatever Egghead I'm two awesome to...”

“Stop it you two.” Cheerilee cut in. “Am I going to have to separate you two.” The Teacher glared at them. They both backed down.

“Sorry.” Twilight said.

“Yeah sorry, but dang Cheerilee that glare could rival even Fluttershy's stare.”

"Will you excuse me I have things to do.”

They waved as Cheerilee walked away. The two of them continued on to hayburger.
========================================================

After lunch Twilight spent the rest of the afternoon watching Rainbow Dash run through a few of the routines she was practicing for the best young fliers competition. On her walk back from Dash's chosen training ground she felt a nip in the air as the sun neared the horizon. As Twilight entered the library she used her telekinesis to throw a few logs in the fireplace in case it got cold enough for them to need it later.

“Hey Twilight,” Spike began as he came down the stairs. “I was wonderin when you'd come back. I expected you to be here when I got back since the library was supposed to be open today.” The little guy came up and wrapped his arms around her neck. She put a foreleg around his neck returning the hug.

“Sorry to worry you Spike but business was slow today so around noon I went out for lunch, I ran into Rainbow Dash on the way and we ended up spending the afternoon together.”

“No worries Twilight, I'm just glad you had a good time.”

Twilight could not help but smile, Spike was always such a sweetheart. “So how was your day Spike? Did you have fun with Big Mac?”

“I sure did Twilight, we got to meet the Canterlot Royals star running back Onyx Bolt. Big Mac had two of his rookie cards, he signed both, and the big guy gave me one.” Spike held up the card. An Onyx coated Unicorn Stallion was pictured, He had a jet black mane and tail, and a cutie mark of a hoofball with four onyx stones around it. He was a handsome stallion, slender but fit with a lean build but muscular legs. He looked like he could easily run through an fore hoof tackle or even a leg tackle. Along the bottom of the picture was a signature Onyx Bolt.

“That's awesome Spike. You better take care of that card; might be worth something someday.”

“I was gonna put it with my most prized comic. I should go do that right now.” Spike turned and sped up the stairs. Twilight headed for the Kitchen. She opened the icebox and pulled out the fixings for a daisy sandwich and a glass of apple juice. She went over to the counter and started building her sandwich.

“There it's safe and sound.” Spike said as he opened the icebox. He opened one of the drawers inside and pulled out a bowl full of different gems. He took it over to the table and took a seat as Twilight levitated her sandwich and drink over and she took her seat as well.

Spike threw a small sapphire in his mouth and bit down, the sound of the crunching gemstone was something Twilight had grown accustomed to over the years, so much so that it really didn't  bother her anymore. Once Spike swallowed he spoke.

“So what's on the docket for tomorrow Twilight?”

“Well, I didn't end up making it to Quills and Sofas today I forgot about it until I was on my way home and they were closed by the time I got there. So we'll have to go there tomorrow and since it's Thursday that means a delivery of new books. That plus the library being open will probably take up most of our day.”

“Oh yeah, well,” Spike checked the wall clock it was eight o'clock. Her number one assistant polished off the rest of his gems. “I think I'll call it a night.” He pushed his chair back from the table. Twilight ate her sandwich as she watched Spike go over to the sink and wash out the bowl he had been eating out of. He laid it on a towel. Twilight finished her sandwich and juice, she stepped out of her chair as Spike approached. “Good night Twilight.” The young dragon said as he threw his arms around Twilight and gave her a hug.

“Good night Spike, see you in the morning.” She watched him leave the kitchen.
========================================================

“Ah, a nice warm shower before bed always helps me to relax.” She closed the bedroom door behind her and laid the towel across her back, and walked up to her mirror. She levitated her hair brush and ran it through her wet mane until it was straight. She kinda like the way her mane looked when it was wet but her brother had always told her that it looked better with the curl at the end so she had kept the style; but she was considering maybe changing the style but that was a thought for another day.

She went over to her book shelf and grabbed a book, she was almost finished with the newest Daring Do book by A.K. Yearling. She only had three chapters left so she settled into her bed. Reading was her favorite way to relax before bed. Twilight looked out the window the moon was full tonight and the sky was beautiful, if she didn't have so much to do tomorrow she would go up to the balcony and do some stargazing. Instead she just thanked Luna for the beautiful night and for watching over her dreams. With that done she picked up her book and was lost in the fantasy of the great adventurer Daring Do.
