A Very Awkward Morning

by Grenazers

Story

It is early in the morning at Sweet Apple Acres. While most ponies would’ve still be in their beds at this time, the apple ponies were starting to awake. They needed to get up this early, since they have a huge workload and it’ll require the entire day for them to complete it.

Applejack woke up with a tiring yawn and went straight to the bathroom to clean herself up. Once she was done she was about to head downstairs to make breakfast when she came upon Big Macintosh’s room.

Looking inside, Applejack sees her brother was still sleeping, slumbering peacefully beneath his blanket. From where she was standing she can hear his loud snores coming from under the blanket.

This was a rare sight for Applejack. Ever since she was young, her brother was always the first one to get up early in the morning.

Suddenly a mischievous idea pops in Applejack’s head. This was something she hadn’t done in a long time. She remembered when she was little, that whenever she catches her brother sleeping in, she would jump onto his bed, hop up and down while telling him to wake up.

This was something that always annoyed him and she knew it.

With her mind made up, Applejack quietly trots closer to his bed. Once she is near, she leaps on top of the bed and started jumping.

“Rise and shine Big Mac!” She shouts. “Time for you to get up!”

“Hey what’s the big idea?” A familiar voice angrily asks from beneath the blanket. Suddenly the blanket begins to push up, revealing Rainbow Dash. “It’s way too early for this!”

“Rainbow Dash?” Applejack said surprise to see her friend in her brother’s bed.

“Applejack?” Rainbow said, equally surprise to see her friend as well.

Rainbow looks around and notices that Applejack found her sleeping in her brother’s bed. Chuckling innocently she look up at her orange friend.

“Well this is awkward.”

Down in the kitchen Big Macintosh stood by the stove top, cooking up some pancakes for the two mares sitting behind at the table.

It was Rainbow’s insistent that they have breakfast first, before she explains things. Applejack begrudgingly agrees and waited patiently for the pancakes to be done.

During the whole time waiting, Applejack kept staring at her friend, all the while Rainbow tried to avoid making eye contact and just look around the kitchen.

“Alright you two, your breakfast is ready.” Big Macintosh then gave each of them a stack of five pancakes with syrup poured all over them. “Enjoy yourself now I got to head into town to run some errands.” He was about to leave, but then stopped at the door. “Oh wait a second, Rainbow I forgot to give you something.”

“What?” Rainbow asks while stuffing her mouth with pancakes.

Big Macintosh then walks over to Rainbow and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. “Good morning, Dashie.” He whispered as he walks off.

“You big dork.” Rainbow bashfully replies, blushing slightly.

She then immediately stop blushing and remembered who was sitting across the table.

“Dashie, huh?” Applejack said and took a bite out of her pancake. “Getting really chummy with my brother are you?”

“OK, look Applejack. I know what you’re going to ask, so let me get this out. I did not sleep your brother.”

Applejack raises one of her eyebrow. “Really huh, then what were you doing sleeping in his bed?”

The blush returns on her face. “What no, I meant sleep in the other way.”

“What other way?” Applejack questioned.

“Well you know that thing.” The blush on Rainbow’s face deepens.

“What thing?”

“You know the thing two ponies do together.”

“Like what?”

At this point Rainbow Dash’s face has become fully red. “Come on Applejack, do I really need to spell it out for you.”

Suddenly Rainbow heard the sound of chuckling coming from her friend.

“I’m messing with you, Rainbow. Of course I know what you mean.” Applejack chuckled.

“Not funny, AJ.”

“It is for me.” Applejack teasingly said.

The two mares then took a break from their conversation to finish off their pancakes before it gets cold. After they were done with their breakfast, they resume their conversation.

“So how long have you and Big Mac been in a relationship?” Applejack questions.

“Well not that long, only for a couple of months now.”

“A couple of months!” Applejack exclaimed, surprise at how long they been dating. “Now how in heck have I not notice up until now.”

“Well we’ve been mostly keeping this relationship to ourselves.” Rainbow explains.

“OK, then why didn’t either of you tell me?”

“We didn’t want to make things awkward for you.”

“How would it be awkward for me?”

“Well imagine you and your brother standing there and I come along and I’m all like: “Hey what’s up AJ” and we brohoof. Then when I get to Big Mac I’ll be like: “Hey stud” and then I start kissing him and you’re just standing there, feeling awkward.”

“Well you know you don’t have to do that.” Applejack pointed out.

“I know, but I really enjoy it.”

“Look Rainbow, I don’t care that you show my brother affection. You can make out with him in front of me for I care.”

“Well that’s nice to hear. Big Mac likes when other ponies watch.” Rainbow mention.

Applejack’s eyes widen from this disturbing revelation of her brother and her mouth drop open.

“Pffft just kidding, AJ!” Rainbow laughs. “Sure got you there.”

“Heh, you sure did.” Applejack reply, joining her friend on the joke.

Once their laugher stopped, Applejack ask Rainbow question. “Say, Rainbow can I ask you something?”

“Sure, what is it Applejack?”

“Why do you love me my brother?”

“What do you mean? Big Mac is a great stallion. What’s not to love about him?” Rainbow answered.

“Yeah I know my brother is great, it’s just that I never thought he was your type.”

Rainbow gave her friend a suspicious look. “What do you mean my type?”

“Well because he’s the exact opposite of you. He’s quiet and passive, while you’re loud and assertive.”

“Oh that’s what you meant.” Rainbow said as her eyes returns to normal.

“Yeah, what do you think I meant?” Applejack questioned.

“Well I though you think I was into… actually never mind, forget I said it. “Rainbow quickly shrugs off her response. “So you think I’m into ponies that are like me?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh please Applejack. I know I’m awesome, but I’m not that narcissistic.”

“Says the pony that has her own fan club.” Applejack remark.

“Hey I didn’t start that fan club, Scootaloo and those other ponies form the club themselves.”

“OK, but what about ponies that are like you. Like that Soarin fellow.” Applejack brought up.

“Soarin’s fine, but I mostly seem him as friend and teammate.” Rainbow explained. “Besides, he already has sight out for somepony. An honest mare if I heard correctly.”

“Well that mare sure is lucky to have a fine stallion like him pining for her.”

“You have no idea.” Rainbow smirked.

“So anyway back onto the original topic. Why do you love my brother?”

“What can I say? Big Mac is smart and awesome. Despite being big and strong he can really be gentle if you know what I mean.” Rainbow gives her friend a wink before continuing on. “Sure he doesn’t talk much, but that’s alright with me because I mostly do the talking anyway. Beside he’s the type that rather listen then talk as he is always there to happily listen to me rambling about my day, never getting tired from hearing the sound of my voice.”

Applejack then smiled. “Well Rainbow after hearing all that, I’m happy for the two of you.”

“Really, Applejack?”

“You bet, Rainbow. Honestly I think my brother spend way too much working on the farm and never have anytime for himself. Now not only does he have a fillyfriend, she happens to be one of my best friends.”

“Wow Applejack, thanks.” Rainbow reply. “That means a lot coming from you.”

“You’re welcome.” Applejack then collects all the plates and started washing them at the sink. “Well I gotta start working soon. Them apple trees aren’t going to buck themselves.”

“Yeah, I better go to. I got some stuff to do myself.” Rainbow said as she headed for the door.

“Can I expect to see you again later today?” Applejack question.

Rainbow then turns around and smiles. “Eeyup.”
