A single candle burns low in the night, it illuminates a lone unicorn stallion sitting a desk in a dark library, he silently writes in a book with his magic, while flipping the pages of another with his hoof. His body is blue and his white mane is cut short, a thin beard matches his mane perfectly. He continues on for minutes on end silently reading, silently writing, until everything suddenly goes black. The stallion doesn't seem bothered by this at all, he simply smiles and reaches up and touches the small hooves covering his eyes.
"Peek-a-boo guess who." The voice of a young filly rings in the stallions ear, he rubs his chin with his hoof pretending to be deep in thought.
"Hmm, I can only think of one pony who would be up this far past their bed time." The stallion reaches up and grabs the filly by the waist. "And that pony is." The stallion flips her up over his head and plops her down in his lap, the filly is dark blue with medium length pale blue mane, she giggles the whole time. "Luna."
"Starry that's cheating." Luna giggles, 'Starry' looks down at her playfully.
"May I ask what your still doing up my little princess?" 'Starry' with a raised eyebrow, Luna giggles at him.
"Nope you may not." Luna says with a big grin, 'Starry' puts a hoof to his chest in mock hurt.
"Oh come now Princess what must I do to learn this most vital of information." 'Starry' says in an over the top manner, Luna puts her hoof to her chin and thinks for a minute, her eyes light up as she gets an idea, she hops from 'Starry's' lap and lands on the desk.
"If ye wish to learnth my secrets thou must swear fealty to me." Luna says while making dramatic hoof gesture for emphasis, 'Starry' chuckles at the young filly.
"Very well I pledge my loyalty to you oh great and powerful Luna." 'Starry' bows his head, Luna picks up on of the quill 'Starry' was using.
"Then I Princess Luna dub ye." Luna touches the feather of the quill on one of his shoulders and then the other. Sir 'Starry' The Bearded."
"The Bearded?" 'Starry' un-bows his head and raises an eyebrow at the small Princess. "Why, Bearded?"
"Well you do have a beard." Luna says matter of factly.
"But why not something cool like 'Starry' The Magnificent, or 'Starry' The Amazing, or-" 'Starry stops talking when he sees that the young filly is pouting at him.
"But I think your beard is cool." Luna says while showing off her best puppy dog eyes. 'Starry' doesn't have a heart of stone so he caves before the cuteness immediately.
"You know what your right, The Bearded is pretty cool, I'll have to use that from now on." Luna's face lights up upon hearing this.
"You really like it?" Luna asks, her frown turns into a big smile.
"Yep I sure do." 'Starry' looks at Luna expectantly.Now are you gonna hold up your part of the deal and tell me what your doing up?"
"Oh ok. Ya see, the reason for that is... Escape!" Luna suddenly jumps off the desk, flapping her wings she soars out of library and into the hall, 'Starry' wastes no time quickly hopping out of chair and giving chase.
"Luna get back here!" 'Starry' shouts as he pursues the filly down the hallway, Luna turns down corridor after corridor, 'Starry' is right behind her, his long legs help him keep up with the much smaller pony. The two run/fly through the halls of the castle, 'Starry' could just grab her with his magic, Luna doesn't know why he doesn't. Luna turns around a corner and slams into something, the impact throws her off balance causing her to fall out of the air, 'Starry' rounds the corner just in time to see her fall, before he can grab her with his magic, she is enveloped in a gold aura and placed gently on the ground. 'Starry' moves his gaze from the small Alicorn rubbing the top of her head, to the pony she ran into, 'Starry' flinches when he sees the long pink hair and disapproving stare of a much taller pony, a white Alicorn.
"Celestia." 'Starry' says nervously. "I'm sorry did we wake you?"
"Luna." Celestia ignores 'Starry' and focuses her attention on the small Alicorn sitting on the ground, the sound of the older mares voice causes Luna to freeze. She slowly turns her head to face the pink haired giant, upon seeing the scowl being directed at her she forces a smile and a laugh.
"H-hey Sis whatcha doin here?" Luna tries another forced laugh but that only makes Celestia scowl more.
"Go to bed Luna." Celestia seems to finally notice 'Starry's Presence. "I need to talk to 'Starry' or a moment."
"Celestia don't be mad at Starry I'm the one who-"
"It's ok Luna." Luna turns to look at 'Starry' his gentle smile makes her feel a bit better. "You go on to bed, I'll come tell you a story in a little bit."
"You promise?" Luna says with a pout, 'Starry' chuckles at her.
"Yes I promise." 'Starry' pats her on the head. "Now go on now."
"Ok." Luna chirps with a bright smile. She quickly dashes off, she only hears one sentence spoken by her sister.
"Why do you put her through this?"
Later In Luna's Bed Chamber
Luna bolts up in her bed as she hears the door open, she smiles at the unicorn stallion walking through the door.
"I got you in trouble didn't I?" Luna asks, she hangs her head sadly, but a sudden chuckle from 'Starry' makes her look back up.
"Of course I didn't." 'Starry' sits down on the edge of the bed. Celestia just wanted to talk to me a bit."
"Your not fibbing are you?" Luna asks with another pout, 'Starry' waves a dismissive hoof.
"Of course." 'Starry' claps his hooves together. "Now let's get to that story."
Before 'Starry can start telling the story he feels a small pair of hooves pull on his fur, he turns around to look at Luna her face face is downcast, mostly hidden by her hair. 'Starry' opens his mouth to question the Princess, but she beats him to the punch.
"Are you going to die?" 'Starry' freezes upon hearing these words, the room falls eerily silent as 'Starry' just stares at Luna in shock.
"Luna what are you talking about?" 'Starry' asks with a sympathetic look in his eyes.
"Your not a Alicorn like me, so that means y- your gonna d- die some day right?" 'Starry' sees tears fall from the small filly. 'Starry' sighs heavily.
"Yes I am." Luna looks up at the stallion, her tearful gaze meets his sympathetic smile. "I may die some die Luna, neither of us can control that, but I will do everything in my power to make the day I leave this world is as far away as possible. 'Starry' reaches out a hoof a wipes the tears from the young Princesses eye. "So please smile Luna, because No matter what I will always be here for you."
'Starry' smiles at Luna, glad to see that his words have stopped her tears, he flinches in surprise when her tears suddenly start up again even faster then before, her mouth covers up into a huge smile, she flings her hooves at 'Starry' wrapping her forelegs around his neck in a tight hug, 'Starry' just sits their surprised silently listening to the young filly cry into his shoulder, he can only make out one sentence.
"I love you big brother!" 'Starry' chuckles lightly to himself before returning the embrace.
"I love you too little sis."
Luna slowly opens her eyes, she lifts her head from the desk she was laying on, she carefully wipes her tear stsined eyes as she gazes at the book her head had neen laying on. The Journal Of Two Sister's, a book that had been written after her banishment, no mention of her brother was in this book, at leadt no mention of him being her brother, she turns her head and glances at a large stack of books nearby, all studies and theorys about all kinds of magic, all written by a stallion she used to call Starry. The sight of the books causes her eyes to water as memories of her brother flash before her eyes, but the memory stuck in her brain doesn't involve her brother instead it involves Discords mother.
But the Element of Sin used its dark powers and placed curse on him. It killed him. Tears begin falling from Lunas eyes. You knew him as Starswirl The Bearded. Luna covers her eyes with her hooves, she tries to will the tears and the thoughts away, but one last memory slips into her mind, which only makes more tears. The Element of Sin caused untold devastation to the planet by choosing Princess Luna as its first bearer.
"Big Brother... " Luna quietly whispers, a sob rocks her entire body. "I-i'm sorry."
