//------------------------------// // 8 Library // Story: For science // by Znegil //------------------------------// We moved towards Ponyville while a happy Twilight was telling me about recent experiments she had conducted. At some point she suddenly stopped. "I think we are close enough now. I should be able to teleport us the rest of the way." "You can teleport and even bring me with you?", it was hard for me to believe she could do such a thing. "I practiced a lot in the last month. You are pretty big, but I think I can do it." "Is size the limiting factor or mass?", I asked. "Mass has only little influence. It's the size of the field I have to create around you.", she replied. "Is this field like an additional skin to my body or is it a cuboid with my maximum height, depth, and width?", I wanted to know. "It's a cuboid, why?" I sat down on the ground and brought my limbs as close to my body as possible until I was in fetal position. "Then this should make it a lot easier for you.", I said to her while my head rested on my knees. "It will make it a lot easier.", I heard the surprise in her voice. "It is so nice to have someone to talk to who understands such concepts and can even make suggestions... Since you haven't teleported before you will feel a little dizzy. I suggest you keep your eyes shut while we transport and a few more seconds afterwards." I closed my eyes. "Okay, I'm ready." I heard a slight humming sound, and in an instant everything felt different. Even with my eyes closed I noticed the change in brightness and how the surrounding sound changed. The air had a slight smell of metal like somebody was welding moments before, but soon the smell of old books overpowered it. I was happy for Twilight making me close my eyes, the complete change of everything visible could have been too much for me. I stayed in the fetal position with my eyes closed a bit longer. "What is this?", I heard somebody say; the voice was hard to describe... it was like a female imitating a male voice. "Spike, this is Stella, a human, we will learn from each other if Princess Celestia allows it.", Twilight answered. As the dizziness faded, I slowly opened my eyes and saw another odd creature. "You are... a big lizard?" "Lizard???", it snorted. "I'm a noble dragon!" "Well... you are quite... compact in size.", I carefully remarked. "Spike is still a baby dragon, but he is also my number one assistant.", Twilight explained while she hugged him from behind. "She is from another world Spike. She couldn't know you're a noble dragon." "I'm sorry Spike.", I apologized. "There are no dragons in my world." His mood seemed to lighten up again. "Well even in this world I'm not standard for a dragon." I stood up and put my backpack next to one of the walls. I heard a surprised sound from Spike. I guess he hadn't expected me to be that big. "Spike. ", Twilight addressed him. "Could you please take a letter for me?" "Sure, Twilight.", somehow he got a scroll and quill from behind his back; maybe he's got some magic too. "Dear Princess Celestia, Fluttershy found a...", Twilight suddenly stopped. "We should include Princess Luna too. New letter please." Spike crumpled up the letter and threw it into a wastebasket. Judging by his perfect hit, I guessed he was used to doing this. He produced another scroll from behind his back. "Dear Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, Fluttershy found a visitor from another world in the Everfree Forest. Her name is Stella. She came to us through a portal, so she could learn about our world. She is willing to give us knowledge about her species and world in return. I would like to have your permission for her to stay and to learn from each other. Your faithful student, Twilight Sparkle." To my surprise Spike burned the letter using a green breath of fire, the smoke flying out the window. There was a slight smell of sulfur lingering in the air. "Why would you burn that?", I asked. "It's a magic flame; the letter will reappear next to Princess Celestia.", Spike explained to me. "Pyro-teleportation?", I asked confused. "That's an interesting description for it.", said Twilight. "It's a powerful spell Celestia used on him. You need a lot of magical power to make a spell permanent. Princess Celestia should answer pretty..." Spike burped a green flame, and another scroll appeared in midair. Twilight instantly used her telekinesis to grab it and levitated it to her. So much magic is used like the most common thing. "Dear Twilight, that's most interesting news.", Twilight read aloud. "I will wake up Luna, and we will meet you in the library within an hour." I wasn't looking forward to this meeting, but I trusted in Twilight's judgment about this situation... and it was too late to run anyway. "Well let me show you the guest room so you can put your stuff there.", Twilight said and led me up some stairs after I grabbed my backpack again. "It's right next to mine." She opened the door to a small but pretty room, the sun shining through a huge window gave it a nice warm tone. I put my stuff next to a small bed. I guessed if I laid in it diagonally it would be nearly big enough. "Sorry, I never guessed I could have such a big house guest.", she apologized. "It's fine.", I told her. "You saw before I can make myself pretty small. If it doesn't work for me, I still have my sleeping bag." There were some rows of books next to one of the walls. Twilight followed my gaze. "We use it as a little storage room when no one is here... so nearly all the time." I took one of them and opened it, the same strange characters as in Fluttershy's books. "Could you teach me to read these? For some reason we speak alike, but I can't read this." "Sure, we can start tomorrow... do you think you could bring me some books from your world?", she asked in a hopeful tone. I took out my journal and opened it. I had made a page containing the times the portal opened, two columns, Equestria and Earth. Twilight peeked inside it. "I can't read your writing either, seems like we have to teach each other." I looked for a good time to go to my world. Nighttime in the Everfree Forest was out of the question. "I think I could go to my world tomorrow morning and get some books for you, the library in the research center is quite big. I could come back eight hours later, six hours in my world." "That would be so great.", she let out a squeal of joy. She put a hoof to her mouth. "Sorry.", she said smiling. "Don't be. It was awfully cute.", I told her while unpacking a few things. "As if anypony would call me cu... wait, did you just say time moves differently in our worlds?", she asked surprised. "Eight hours here are six hours in my world." "That is so fascinating, maybe...", a knock on her front door interrupted her. "I guess the princesses have arrived. We should go downstairs and talk to them." I followed her downstairs while I was hoping for the best.
