Chapter 1

"Oh thank you, thank you, thank you Twilight!"

Rainbow Dash was twirling about the air of the confining spaces of her friend Twilight Sparkle's library in a fit of excitement and reckless abandon as she knocked a couple of books from their perch atop Twilight's shelves. Down below was a purple mare catching the books with a skillful exhibition of magic before gently setting them down to move on and retrieve another endangered book.

Twilight Sparkle had just given Rainbow Dash something of infinite value to her: the next entry in the Daring Do novels. This was more than enough to solidify Twilight Sparkle as Rainbow Dash's "best friend EVER" for certain. The cyan pegasus pulled her friend into a tight hug.

"Thank you soooo much Twilight!" she praised.

Twilight found her cheeks turning a dark shade of red, and an awkward feeling rose in her gut. She shyly returned the embrace, a weak smile forming on her lips, "Heheh... You're welcome Rainbow Dash. I know how much you love Daring Do and I thought it'd be nice to get you the latest novel."

"Well, it's awesome! You're awesome!" Rainbow Dash declared, releasing her blushing companion she took up the book in her hooves, "Welp, I'm heading back home to read this baby. I'll catch you later Twilight!"

Before Twilight could even say good-bye, Rainbow Dash flew out of the library at top speed, leaving the unicorn all by herself. Twilight Sparkle sighed a breath of relief.

Good thing I left the window open... I figured she'd want to get to reading her book as fast as she could. But... I still don't quite understand...

Twilight had recently been stricken with quite the predicament. After Rainbow Dash's great revelation that she enjoyed reading, she had been visiting the library a lot more often than she used to. Oftentimes she'd check out fictional stories that she thought sounded "totally awesome" and Twilight of course helped with her decisions and directed her to what she considered some of the finest Equestrian literature, though some of those were written since before Luna had turned into Nightmare Moon 1000 years ago, and Rainbow Dash found those incredibly boring and hard to read. They spent a lot of time together reading in the library as well, but sometimes Rainbow Dash preferred the comfort of her cloud-based home to read in. Twilight was admittedly disappointed today had been one of the days Rainbow Dash had chosen to read at home.

After spending so much time with the pegasus, Twilight was quite aware that they were growing closer and closer to one another. She wasn't sure if Rainbow Dash felt the same way, but Twilight certainly felt something deeper than a friendship in this situation. She decided to inquire about these feelings via a letter to her teacher, Princess Celestia. What she got was a bit discomforting to her, as her teacher described the possibility of love. Love... Something Twilight knew nothing about.

Sure, she loved her friends, and she loved her family, but this was different. Those kinds of love she could wrap her head around and understand, but this... This went much deeper than she was aware was possible. Of course, as a natural-born bookworm, she decided to study this. Celestia's letter didn't provide much insight as to what love was, just that it was a very strong, indescribable feeling between two ponies. The description was so...vague. It didn't shed much light on the subject, at least not for Twilight. She turned to romance novels for some sort of help, but alas the stories all seemed too... Convenient and predictable. Twilight was not sure if they accurately depicted love or not, but she wasn't done looking for answers.

Today, however, she was met with the same confused, bashful... Odd feeling she got whenever she was around Rainbow Dash lately. Just the same as before. It was becoming frustrating. But at the same time, having Rainbow Dash come over also felt like a boon to the magical pony.

She enjoyed making her so happy with the book, for sure, and the hug was the highlight of her entire time in Ponyville, it seemed like, and those were the only two things sticking out in Twilight's mind at the moment.

"Hey, Twilight!"

Twilight snapped out of her involuntary daydream, only now noticing her heart rate much higher than usual. That was another thing that happened a lot whenever Rainbow Dash was around. Another thing Twilight still had trouble understanding fully.

"Helloooo, Equestria to Twilight!"

She turned around to find her draconian friend Spike jabbing at her side for her attention, "Oh, sorry Spike! I was just, eh... Zoning out..."

"You all right Twi?" Spike asked, his eyes flickered as they stared up at Twilight. He was obviously concerned, though he did know of Twilight's feelings for Rainbow Dash. Even so, her frequent bouts of zoning out were worrying to the infantile dragon.

But Twilight offered him a reassuring smile, "I'm all right, Spike. Thank you."

"Well... Okay, but I hope you're gonna help with cleaning up the library."

"Huh?" Twilight looked confused for a second before realising what the young dragon meant. Looking around, there were scattered books still left on the library floor from Rainbow Dash's display of excitement earlier. Twilight chuckled, knowing she must have made Rainbow Dash's day with that book. That made her feel happier inside than usual. With renewed vigour she began to work her magic, sorting books and placing them on shelves.

It was that simple at first, but then her thoughts started to wander again. Back to focusing on Rainbow Dash, and how happy she made her today, and how great it felt to be hugged by her... Oh, all this emotion was simply to much for her!

"TWILIGHT!"

Twilight was once against snapped back into reality by her loyal assistant, who was dangling in the air by a strong purple aura that was unmistakably that of her own magic. She had to double take, and looked around the room to find a lot of various other things floating in the air. Bookcases, her writing desk, a large number of books, herself... not to mention most of the room was doused in her magical aura! She let her eyes dart around the room. She was unsure as to how she was even able to perform such strong feats with her magic. It confused her to the highest degree of confusion itself.

Suddenly a sharp pain stung through Twilight's skull. This level of absurd magical exertion was simply too much for the unicorn in the first place, and everything came back to the ground with all speed as the purple aura dissipated with all haste. Twilight was the last thing to hit the ground, the amount of magic she expelled being far too much for a unicorn even at her level. The last thing she saw was Spike hitting the ground in front of her before her own vision faded.
