Azure Memories

Chapter XXIII: Dresses

"Isn't this going a bit overboard?" Sapphire asked as Rarity worked on some dresses for the rest of the Elements. It had been a couple months since Twilight's little episode about her 'green sky' memory, yet so far, all the memories she recovered were about mundane things like walking with her parents. Even though overtime she gained a better handle of regaining memories. Six weeks later, she was able to recover two memory fragments instead of one per night. It was still a slow progress when there were tens of thousands of shards in her 'memory hall'. After her period of mania, Twilight weekly asked Sapphire if she recovered any unusual memories, only to be disappointed by the lack of them. Though on the water magic part, she decided to give it a break as she promised to do some research to see if there was anything special about ponies that could control the elements of nature and the sort.

The rest of winter went off without a hitch, though Sapphire did notice Sweetie Belle occasionally lying about in the Boutique, groaning about how bored she is when her parents dropped her off. Though whenever she noticed Sapphire nearby, she  gave her a forced smile, which was probably due to feeling guilty for the harm she and her friends caused to Sapphire. This roll of events came to an end however at the end of winter, where Sapphire experienced her first 'Winter Wrap-Up'. Due to the tradition of not using magic, Sapphire ended up on Applejack's team where she pushed a plow to clear the snow, and witnessed Twilight messing up the entire thing.Thankfully, it all got sorted out later when Twilight took on the role of organizing the town instead.

Shortly after the arrival of Spring, the Crusaders' grounding they received came to an end. They quickly went back to their usual antics, though it stopped for a moment when the Crusaders made preparations for a talent show, to which Sapphire attended. Though after what she had seen, she wondered what possessed the Crusaders were thinking with the show they came up with. Afterwards, things went on as normal until the Elements all needed to get some dresses from Rarity for the Grand Galloping Gala.

"Pfft, this is no trouble at all, darling. Besides, this is the least I can do for five of my closest friends after all," Rarity answered.

"Still, I think doing five dresses at once would be a bit much for anypony," Sapphire commented as she watched Rarity levitate a bolt of cloth over to herself.

"It may be, but when I'm inspired like I am now, these dresses are nothing more than a simple exercise," Rarity declared in a voice full of confidence. "It's a shame though that you can't come with us dear, for you would be a lovely sight to the nobility of Canterlot. Especially in one of my dresses, which would allow them to see the beauty of your lithe figure."

Blinking a bit before blushing at the comment, Sapphire replied, "I don't think they would be that interested in a pony like me, especially given my backgrou—"

"Nonsense dear. Why, I do believe that your history may attract more ponies then repulse them. Imagine the stories of the mare whose beauty was untarnished the by the ravages of the wilds. Surely it would only serve to aid you darling," Rarity commented, pausing long enough to give Sapphire a smile, one that Sapphire returned with a skeptical look in exchange.

"I think you're stretching things a bit there Rarity," Sapphire responded, while Rarity just rolled her eyes at that. "Though, are you certain that you don't need any help with those dresses?"

"You don't need to fret about this, I have everything well in hoof dear. How about you go out for some fresh air?" Rarity said, to which Sapphire frowned, for she knew this was a sign that Rarity needed to be alone to focus on her work.

"Alright Rarity, though don't hesitate to get me if there is anything I can do to help," Sapphire replied before leaving Rarity to her work.

"They didn't like your dresses? Really?" Sapphire asked as she viewed the dresses in question with a skeptical expression. "Is something wrong with that? They looked wonderful to me."

Letting out a sigh while she was working on a new dress, Rarity answered, "It's not that there was anything wrong with them, it just wasn’t what they expected them to be."

"Huh, go figure," Sapphire commented as she looked at the new dresses that were being made, grimace coming onto her face at the current state of the dresses. "Is it just me, or do these dresses look..."

Sighing once more, Rarity replied, "I know what you mean dear, they look absolutely dreadful, but please don't tell the others about what I said. This is just what they envisioned their dresses to be, and while I dislike the thought of even making such things, all this effort is still for them."

Humming to herself, Sapphire turned her attention away from the dresses and towards Rarity, noticing how tired she looked. "Are you certain that you don't need some help? You're not looking like your usual self Rarity."

"I'm fine dear, and I wouldn't want you to work on something like... this. There's no need for you to fret about all this, I will surely figure out a solution to all this," Rarity responded, which Sapphire frowned in doubt about the whole situation.

"If you say so, but my offer still stands. Until then, I'll be in my room studying," Sapphire said as she started to leave the room, giving Rarity one last worried look before making her exit.

Even though I thought that show was a disaster, I didn't expect Rarity to take things this hard, Sapphire thought to herself as she stood outside Rarity's door as she knocked on it. Shortly after Rarity finished the second set of dresses, it turned out that the other Elements set up a fashion show where a rather important pony in the fashion industry witnessed the dresses, which led to some extreme criticism that made Rarity broke down and locked herself in her room for days. Even when the other Elements showed up to check up on her, she still refused to come out. "Rarity, I think it's time for you to come out."

"I’ll say once again dear, I'm never coming out! My life is ruined!" Rarity cried out from her room.

"Rarity, it was just one... what was that word... oh yeah! It was just one reviewer, Rarity. You can't just let that be the end of your dreams," Sapphire said.

"You don't understand what the word of one important pony like Hoity Toity can do Sapphire. I'm doomed!" Rarity exclaimed, causing Sapphire to shake her head before she tried to say something else, only to hear something behind her.

"Pssst! Over here," whispered a voice, causing Sapphire to turn her head around to see Pinkie Pie at the end of the hallway, one hoof doing a gesture to tell her to come over. As Sapphire was about to open her mouth to say something, Pinkie continued, "Sshhh... stay quiet."

Nodding in response, but still confused, Sapphire trotted over to Pinkie before following her down the stairs. There, she saw that the rest of the Elements were gathered there. Staring at the group, she asked, "What is going on here?"

Taking a step forward, Twilight answered, "We're here to fix up Rarity's own dress as an apology for the fashion show. Since you're here, we were wondering if you want to help. Though we need you to keep quiet about this either way, we want this to be a surprise as well."

After hearing their plans, Sapphire's gave them a small smile as she replied, "I would love to, but I don't know a thing about making dresses. I normally just bring over whatever materials Rarity needs whenever I help her out."

"No problem there, sugarcube. Fluttershy here will be able to take care of that part herself," Applejack declared, in which Fluttershy nodded to.

"Alright girls, let's get to work," Twilight said as she looked at everyone before they went about working on their goal of finishing Rarity's dress.

Seems like everything is finally coming around, Sapphire thought to herself after watching the extravagantly dressed, white mane and blueish grey stallion known as Hoity Toity giving praise to Rarity's work. Shortly after the work on the dress that was finished, Twilight hatched a scheme to get Rarity out of her room to witness the dress, as well as managing to get Hoity Toity to return for a private fashion show. Sapphire watched the show from the sidelines to her own amazement at how well each dress complimented their wearers. Though, it was amusing for her to see Rarity nearly snapping at the thought of producing dozens of the dresses she had made at Hoity Toity's request.

Standing up, Sapphire was about to take her leave to let the others enjoy their success, when she heard Hoity Toity called out, "Hey! You there! Where are you going?"

Turning her head around, Sapphire saw that the stallion was looking straight at her. "Umm... I was leaving since I'm no longer needed here?"

The other girls were about to protest to what Sapphire stated, only for Hoity to get the first word in when he said, "And deprive the room of a unique and beautiful mare like yourself?"

Blinking for a moment, Sapphire started to blush as she replied, "What? What do you mean?"

"What I mean is that it is a shame that a pony with such a lithe figure isn't known to the world," Hoity declared as he approached the befuddled Sapphire. "I have seen mares of various figures, but none have managed to capture a figure that is fit yet natural in some sense. You appear to be thin, but no signs of being starved. Your body curves in all the right places, and you possess a beautiful and flowing mane, one that suits you greatly."

"Starved? He should see her during supper," Rainbow muttered to the others, only for Rarity to jab her in the side.

"Hush you, don't ruin this for her," Rarity chided as she watched the scene unfold before her.

"Uh... thank you for the complement?" Sapphire uttered out as Hoity started to circle her, inspecting her form.

"It is much more than a complement, dear. It would be a tragedy if a mare of your particular beauty would be denied in the world of fashion. Madam, I would like to offer you a chance at showing the world your gifts, for I know of some ponies in Manehattan that would love to be able to assist you in that venture," Hoity proclaimed as Sapphire just looked at him in confusion before glancing at the Elements, her eyes portraying her need for assistance.

"Sapphire, dear, he's offering you a job as a fashion model!" Rarity exclaimed, causing Sapphire to look at her and Hoity in surprise.

"Wait, me, a fashion model?" Sapphire asked. "But wouldn't that mean I have to leave Ponyville?"

"Nonsense my dear. Even though it would be convenient for all parties if you were to move to Manehatten, we can simply set up a simple arrangement. You may only need to visit the city once or twice a month, as well as the occasional fashion show. Your employer will guide you on what you must do to be a successful model," Hoity explained.

"But... I’ve never been in another town like Ponyville, much less a city like Manehatten, at least from what I can remember..." Sapphire replied, only for Applejack to step in.

"Don't you worry about that sugarcube. If you need anypony to help you in the city of Manehatten, why I have some relatives there that I reckon would be glad to help you out," Applejack said.

"Darling, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and could just be the career that you've been looking for all this time. Besides, it wouldn't hurt for you to give it a try, would it?" Rarity added as the other Elements offered their support.

"Well... I suppose I could give it a try, if nothing else..." Sapphire finally said, causing Hoity to smile at her before he turned around to face the door.

"Wonderful! Now follow me to the train station, for we're leaving tonight so we can begin your journey to fame!"

"Oka—tonight‽"
