Fluttershy snuggled in closer to Dash. She’d very quickly lost interest in whichever action film they’d ended up renting this week, but at least her girlfriend was enjoying herself.

“Aww yeah, this is the best part,” Dash exclaimed, spraying more popcorn over the empty half of the couch. “You’ll love this part, ‘Shy. See, the bad guys think...”

Fluttershy never found out how that sentence ended, since the picture on the screen vanished, quickly joined by the lights. The silence of the night was soon interrupted by the shrill beeping of various alarms blaring from down the street.

“Oh come on...” Dash yelled, finally emptying the popcorn. “A power cut? Why now? Why does this... always...” Dash paused, as she felt something shaking in her chest. "’Shy?”

A quiet squeaking joined the impromptu symphony, as a brief flash of epiphany hit Dash.

“Oh, shit...” she started, her hand quickly meeting her face. “The dark... right...” Dash started glancing around the room, hopelessly trying to find her bearings. “You wait here, ‘Shy. I’m just goona grab a flashlight, or some candles or something...”

Before Fluttershy could respond, Dash was up, moving, and cursing as she ran straight into the coffee table.

“Umm... Dash...” Fluttershy ventured in the direction of the grumbling athlete. “Are you... OK?”

“I’m fine, ‘Shy...” Dash answered, rubbing her knee, before finishing the thought under her breath. “But that’s gonna be one hell of a shiner in the morning...”

Dash moved carefully after that, finally reaching the kitchen door. A brief respite from the invisibility came from the gaudy glow in the dark fridge magnets. OK, really need to say sorry to the squirt for laughing at those now... Dash thought to herself, before rooting through the cupboards for anything.

Meanwhile, Fluttershy sat on the couch, the only things keeping her company being the ticking clock, the shrieking alarms, and the darkness that kept her there.

How long has it been? she asked herself, as the click of the clock hands echoed through the room. And why has Dash turned quiet? Did she fall? I need to help her... she moved to stand, and turned to see Rainbow Dash stood three inches from her. She fell back onto the couch.

“Sorry that took so long...” Dash said, placing the tiny light sources on a coaster. “Couldn’t find the matches or my lighter, had to light ‘em with the hob.”

Fluttershy looked at the two candles on the table in front of them - the birthday candle left from Dash’s party last week, and the stub from last year’s advent candle. She smiled softly at the dancing flames, and quickly wrapped Dash in a huge hug.

“Thank you, Dash...”

Hours later, just as the candles began to splutter, the apartment spurred back into life.

“Finally,” Dash groaned, moving to sit up, spotting the DVDs menu screen on the TV. “Alright, I’ll just get us back to where we were, ‘Shy, and...” she said, reaching for the remote, before seeing Fluttershy, stretch out and give a short yawn as she roused herself from her unintended nap. Blushing at her girlfriend’s sheer adorableness, Dash just gave her a quick smile. “You know what, let’s just pick this back up tomorrow...”

Dash handed over one of the spare cushions, before lowering her arms over Fluttershy’s shoulders, resting her head against Fluttershy’s. Giving her a quick peck on the cheek, Dash closed her eyes and sighed. “Night, ‘Shy.”
