The Two Journals

Derpy was flying high above the clouds. She dove and twisted and turned in very unusual ways. She even flew upside down for a while. On a bad day with her wall-eyes condition she could see pretty much anything except for what was directly in front of her. Her hooves touched the condensed moisture of the clouds as she remembered what she had been flying for. It was Winter Wrap-Up time back home in Ponyville and she had been sent out to bring back the southern birds.

As she flew towards her destination, she wondered why she didn't see any other pegasi. All she saw were clouds and a big, blue sky. No other pegasi were flying with her. She disregarded this as her leaving too early. It would be fine, she'd take a break in South Amareica to make up for it. It wasn't too long of a flight, Equestria was already close to the equator of the world. South Amareica was even closer than that. The whole trip only took about two hours. Still, that's a long trek for a single pegasus.

She again wondered why there were no pegasi around her. They would normally break into an arrow formation to reduce drag, but she was flying solo. Flying solo made her nervous. The tales of Amelia Marehart flying solo around the world always scared her as a child. But she was a brave pony now. She could do it all by herself.

Her fears subsided the second she saw the city. It was quite large with tall skyscrapers piercing the clouds she was flying through. This did not look like South Amareica to her. Then again, she had never actually been to South Amareica. She had always flown north, or west to retrieve the southern birds. She continued flying, not distraught.

She landed in on a sidewalk on a bustling city street. Several ponies were trotting to and fro past her. She tried asking them several things: "Where are the birds?", "Is this South Amareica?", and "Have you seen any other pegasi?". None answered her questions. Finally, she got one stallion to talk to her.

"Excuse me, sir?" Derpy asked the bustling stallion. "Is this South Amareica?"

The stallion looked at the her. "No, this is Manehattan. Where are you from?"

"Ponyville."

"That would explain it. You've flown east, not south." He strode off into the distance with all of the other busy ponies.

Winter Wrap-Up happened today. Everything happened according to Twilight's plan. The only thing that went wrong was Derpy. Sometimes she just drives me crazy. She's a good friend and all, but she's not the brightest one in Ponyville. It's kinda sad, though. She is just happy all the time. It's hard to be mean or mad at her when she just smiles almost constantly.

Anyway, I found her a couple hours after we were supposed to get the southern birds. All the other pegasi came back with their birds, but Derpy didn't. I sent teams of pegasi in all directions. I personally went east. I probably cursed her under my breath too much, now that I think about it. She didn't mean to go east.

I found her in an alley of Manehattan. She was crying about how she had gotten lost and she didn't have the strength to fly back home. I put my arm around her and told her that everything was going to be all right. We flew home together, each of us taking turns in front (I flew in front most of the time, though).

Now she seems to be doing all right. I feel kinda bad for her sometimes. I'm glad that I'm as awesome as I am, because if that was me...

I just don't know how she does it.

I'm glad I have good friends like Rainbow Dash. Today was Winter Wrap-Up, and I got lost. I accidentally went east instead of south. I was very scared, but Rainbow Dash found me! I'm so glad she did. She even flew home with me! She's such a good friend. I don't know what I'd do without her.

I came home and had dinner with my daughter. We played games the entire night! She's such a great daughter. I wish her father was here to see her grow up. She's learning a lot at school! She always comes home excited about what new things she's learned. Sometimes she even teaches me what she learned. I love her so much.

- Derpy Hooves

Derpy was finding work wherever she could these days. With her degree and her condition, she barely scraped enough to send her daughter to school. She landed herself a job as a mover a couple months back. It paid well, and Derpy could do it relatively easily. There was one problem, though. She would frequently drop things. This would be a problem for a pony that is moving either from or to Cloudsdale.

Derpy picked up the box with her hooves and flew over to the house in the clouds. She placed it gently on some converter pads. The pads would be able to support non-cloud proof items on clouds. She went back to the moving truck to pick up another item for the pony that was moving. Her boss came around to inspect them.

"How is everything going back here?"

"Just fine, boss." Raindrops said, trying to look as un-guilty as possible.

"Good job. Just don't drop anythi-"

Just as he said that, Derpy dropped a box labeled 'FRAGILE'. The boss stared at Derpy angrily.

"I can catch it!" Derpy said as she flew towards the ground.

She was quite far off from the ground. The box was falling quickly, but she was catching up. She outstretched her hooves to catch the fragile box right before it hit the ground. She and the box got closer and closer to the dirt road of Ponyville beneath. Derpy was desperately stretching and flapping to catch up with it. She was very close now. Her hooves were around the box now, she just needed to get a firm grip and fly up before...

Derpy's in the hospital. She was a good weather pegasus. She was working three jobs, weather patrol, mailmare, and moving, to make ends meet. She has to send her daughter to school somehow. That no good father, leaving them all by themselves like that. Even with all of their troubles, they always were happy.

Using the past tense is creeping me out. She's not dead. She's just injured. She's not going to die. Well, more, she can't die. It was just a simple crash, I've been through plenty of those. But still... speeding down towards the ground from Cloudsdale as fast as you can go?

I don't want to jinx anything but...

That hurt. I was moving some boxes when I dropped one. While I was trying to catch it and fly back up, I hit the ground. I guess I can't be as fast as Rainbow Dash. It hurt a lot, but now I'm in a hospital. I have ponies taking care of me all the time now. It's mainly my upper body that hurts. That silverware that was in the box didn't help, though. I got cut up pretty badly.

I love my daughter. She's been at my bedside ever since I crashed. She's even helping me write this right now. She's pointing out mistakes and typos and what not. She's such a good daughter. I love her so much and she loves me.

I have a lot of friends in Ponyville that have been stopping by to see me. There was Twilight, Raindrops, my boss, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, a bunch of pegasi friends, and a lot more. I have so many friends here in Ponyville. I like them all a lot. I hope I can get better soon, though. I need to get back to work so Dinky can keep going to school. I love her so much.

Rainbow Dash's phone rang. It was the hospital. She flew quickly away from her house and towards the medical establishment. She bolted through the doors and galloped up to the front desk. She quickly made her way through the intricate maze of rooms and hallways to Derpy's room on the third floor.

Derpy was lying on the bed. She had a cast around her upper body. Dinky was standing right beside her. She was awfully worried. Derpy just looked tired. Rainbow Dash walked up to her.

"How are you, Derpy?"

"Rainbow Dash," she softly spoke, "I'm going to die."

"What? How? Why? You can't!"

"I know it, Rainbow Dash. I just do. I need you to find a way to take care of Dinky."

"Foal-sitting isn't my kind of thi-"

"Please, Rainbow Dash." Her words cried out in desperation. She closed her eyes and whispered one last time. "Take care of Dinky. I love her so much..." Her words faded out as the heart rate monitor slowed its tempo to a halt.

Rainbow Dash backed out of the way with Dinky as several doctors and nurses came in to try and restart the stopping heart. The monitor was drawing a straight line. The doctors tried everything. They tried regular CPR, but it didn't work. They tried mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but it didn't work. They even tried the defibrillator, but it didn't work. Nothing worked. Derpy Hooves was dead.

March 22

Derpy Hooves is dead. She just died suddenly. No one saw it coming except for her. I guess when you die you just know when it's going to happen. I never want to die. It's just so bleak. Not knowing what's on the other side, or if there's anything at all. I don't want to have to find out. And yet we all will.

Derpy gave me Dinky to look after right before she died. Her last words (and probably thoughts) were about her daughter being all right. I guess I'll look after the kid until I can find a foster home or an orphanage or her father. That stupid father...

Anyway, I can't really believe that she's gone. It all happened so fast. Two days ago I was rescuing her from Manehattan and now she's dead. It just makes me sad that that kind of thing could happen to such a good pony as Derpy. She hadn't done anything wrong. She was trying to raise her daughter. She was always happy. Nothing could bring her down, not even death. So why did she have to die?

Well, today has been a sad day. Not only did Dinky lose a mother, I lost a friend. I guess it just makes you appreciate the friends you have right now. Don't let them go. I should probably write to Princess Celestia about this. I'll do it after I've taken care of Dinky.
