If you were to take another shot at this, I suggest making a more closed in story, with a simple plot and motivation. Use that to practice your skills, and develop a feeling for the wasteland. Something simple like the main character hunting a pony, or being hunted by a pony. Nothing all that epic, but you need a real big story to do epic, and there are a lot of readers who are looking for more personal story's they could relate too.
