Fallout: Equestria - Rangers of Wintertrot - Tonto the Trotter

Inkwell was the Steel Rangers treasurer. Now he has to rebuild his group from scratch.

Damn, I can't help but feel they need to give Inkwell an Energy Rifle. They have Hailstorm, and Crosshair's sniper, then they have Inkwell packing heavy weapons, but the number of times they've broken isn't a good sign. That Raptor might have a few good energy weapons, maybe even some Alien Technology, eh?
I have this feeling that the Diamond Dog from the cover is going to be gained from some use of Cram. And, does Discord strike again? Hmm.

Next chapter to read is chapter six. I can't wait to find out where, when, and why that diamond dog on the cover is found and joins them.

In other words, I'm loving the story, shame about his power armor, but I'm sure he'll find a way to fix it.

I'll admit you really misled me with Hoofbiters until Mustang explained. My first thought was anklebiters, and I honestly thought they were about to deal with a roving pack of particularly nasty foals that had formed a gang of some sort. Having been a big Medabots fan back in the day, I can say that it may have led my imagination in that direction from the name alone.

That said, it's always refreshing to see creatures indigenous to the area popping up in stories. It's a nice breath of fresh air from the same bog-standard creatures we're all used to seeing in each iteration of the Fallout games. I was reminded a bit of land sharks by the Hoofbiters, with the ability to burrow in place of simply phasing through the ground.

Oh god, not the Spam analogue. I'm afraid I'm going to have to side with Crosshair on this one. HOW CAN YOU LIKE THAT CRAP, INKWELL? IT'S SO GROSS!

Dude, come on. You can't just put a big shiny button in there and not have it do anything. That's the most cruel tease you can possibly inflict on a person.

I was waiting that whole time to see if Mustang would also get the bishie sparkles to accompany the angelic choir. You raised my hopes and then dashed them quite expertly, sir. Inkwell's reaction garnered a chuckle from me, however. Why wouldn't you want to turn that back on? Crosshair is a wet blanket, as always.

A downed cloudship? Hm. Thunderhead? Raptor? I'm noticing that you've deliberately avoided mentioning what class of ship it is. You definitely made it a point to give it some degree of importance, so I guess I'll have to wait and see what your plans for it are in the future.

Well. Given the continued absence of one of the characters (a female character, no less) on the cover art, the stockpile of an enormous amount of gems, as well as your claim last chapter that she'd show up in this chapter (PHONY!), I think I have a good idea of who's giggling in the background. You've deprived us! Stop beating around the bush and introduce her already!

I really want to be able to say more here, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding stuff to talk about. I think I might be rusty, I haven't commented on anything in two and a half months, and I just can't find the words. Usually i just touch on the big points of the chapter, and that's enough to produce a big meaty comment, but it's not working this time and it's very frustrating. At this point, the most I can do is ask you what you want me to touch on if I missed it. Please, do ask. I really feel awful about it, and it's been eating at me, especially after the comments you left on 30/Epilogue. :(

need more!:flutterrage: ...um... please?:fluttershysad:

Protip:
The airship's class wasn't named.

3875805 Protip: It was mentioned in Fallout Equestria that the airships that were used by Pegasi (cloud technology) were either Raptors or Thunderheads. They lost Thunderheads only in heavy combat situations such as the griffon rebellion. I highly doubt they would leave a downed ship, such as a Thunderhead that still has precious materials pegasi need to survive on the ground. It is more likely a Raptor and deemed too high a risk to scavange, even if it may be possibly repaired, either due to the sheer effort of scavenging effort, followed by the needs to keep the workers silent etc.
It could be a Thunderhead, but I sincerely doubt it.

Protip:
I'm Tonto's editor for this story. I just might know a little more about the story than you, and maybe you should take that into consideration when reading comments by me about said story.

Just saying. :rainbowkiss:

3876573 Damn. I didn't know you were the editor, well, I'm assuming its pegasus at least. I don't think Grffions have any cloud ships, and if Zebras did, it would be kinda pointless.
Forgive my assumption on you not knowing the story. Didn't know you were the editor.

3876736
No worries. Just let the suspense slowly start eating away at you.

It makes the inevitable confusion and shock so much more wonderful. :rainbowwild:

3877082 Haha, now I think its time for

Amirite?
Well, it can only mean good for Inkwell, I think it should be an interesting adventure regardless. Is the Hellhound in the cover a Snowhound or a Hoofbiter? They sound vaguely similar. Vaguely.

Nice explanation for Cram!

Thanks ^^. It just seemed so obvious, feel free to use it in your own fic too =3.

Hey guys and gals, I'm here to tell you that I have uploaded chapter 8 of the Rangers of Wintertrot audiobook on my channel. http://youtu.be/l65032vZtTQ
-Peace!

Next Chapter Please? Please? Please?

I've got so many expectations for this. Also I REALLY REALLY HOPE that some how Jack Knife survived, just to annoy Inkwell to death....and maybe to cause some relationship hilariousness.

4536602 Oh, you're welcome!

4536602 Update?...:unsuresweetie:

Welp, I got bored waiting for an update, so I decided to say this: (Please let me know what you think!)

Hey there!
If your reading this then you are the newly "self" appointed Elder Inkwell of the Wintertrot chapter of the Steel Rangers.

Or to be more precise your One of possibly four Steel Rangers to survive the crash of the airship bringing you to Wintertrot. You don't know who shot you down (you really should look into that buddy!) and at the moment you really don't care.

As Elder, your current priority is to rebuild the Steel Rangers, both as a means to make something of yourself and to avenge your fellow rangers that did not survive.

However, in order to do this you've decided to throw a few rules from the codex out the window. Most of them consider with what is and what is not appropriate to recruit. Do to this, you are now labeled RENEGADE Elder Inkwell and this might lead to other Ranger groups being aggressive towards you.

Your current Steel Rangers consist of:
Star Paladin Mustang (Unicorn),
Knight Crosshair (Zebra),
Technically Scientist Ghouls of Stable 7.

So to put it straight these are your known objectives:
1) Rebuild the Steel Rangers
* Recruit new members
* Find a place to base your Rangers
* Find equipment to both arm and armor your Rangers
2) Find and hopefully ally yourself with the other surviving Steel Rangers from the airship crash
3) Find and hoard tech
4) Find all 13 Stables to hopefully to accomplish your other objectives
Found:
Stable VII (7)
5) Fulfill the shopping list for the Scientist Ghouls from Stable 7

Known Enemy Groups:
1) Snow Pirates
2) Super Ponies
3) Feral Ghouls
4) Most Snow Hounds
5) Wild Life

Recruitment Resources:
Do to you goal of rebuilding the Steel Rangers here in Wintertrot and your willingness to over come racial issues; you technically have access to all races in terms of recruitment. However, not all races might be willing to join the Steel Rangers and some NPC's might not be worth it.
Still, you will unlock the Equal Species award if you manage to recruit the majority of races presented in Wintertrot

1) Steel Ponies: The Steel Rangers are usually made up of Unicorns and Earth Ponies. Since your in Equestria there quite common to come by, but you'll probably have a hard time anyway to recruit them at this moment. It'll be easier once you've established yourself positively with the locals.

NEEDED TO UNLOCK: Through quests and interactions based on charisma you can convince ponies to join your cause.

Earth Pony: A common pony tribe around the wasteland. Physically tougher and bless with more endurance than the other tribes; they are more practical in nature. These ponies are down to earth and have the most farming or wildlife related marks in comparison to the other tribes.
Traits:

Unicorn: A common pony tribe around the wasteland. With their horns they can sling magic spells and not need to use their mouth to shot creatures. They are physically weaker than the other tribes and are limited by their mark and education in the spells they can learn.
Traits:

Pegasus: Pegasi are Enclave, and even if you do find a Dashite or a "ground-born" pegasus; there's no guarantee they'll join you. Still don't give up! Pegasi are usually dare-devils by nature so with your personality they just might sign up.
Traits:

Bat-Pony: Rarest of the pony tribes, if you manage to find one its unlikely you will be able to get them on your team. Bat-Ponies are naturally omnivorous and perfect for nighttime operations.
Needed to unlock: [ERROR DATA NOT AVAILABLE]
Traits:
Note: Each type of pony counts as a separate species for the Equal Species Award

2) Steel Zebras: So, after searching through the crashed airship you manage to save a Zebra from frying in the explosion that followed once the ship's reactors went into meltdown. Do to Zebra traditions based on different tribal laws of their people, Crosshair is indebted to you and has joined your cause.
You have unlocked the ability to recruit among the Zebra tribes. However, this has also earned you the animosity of their enemies the Snow Pirates.
NEEDED TO UNLOCK: SAVE or Befriend a Zebra; particular quests may be needed to be done to convince them to join your cause
Traits:
a) Tribal bingo: For every Zebra you recruit, you gain 5% charisma when dealing with Zebras and are 2% more likely to join you
b) Multiple Cultures: Traditionally, Zebra tribes are divided by vocation and traits like how the pony tribes are divided. Recruiting Zebras from particular tribes will give you access to the strengths and weaknesses of each. There are 13 in all (Acquiring a member from each tribe is not needed for the Equal Species award)

3) Steel Hounds: Hell Hounds are dangerous on their own do to their ferocity, bullet resistant hide, their ability to dig through anything, their resistance to radiation, oh....did I mention their overall size, and their fear some claws? Well based on the title picture, your the crazy idiot who some how managed to recruit one and fit it with its own Steel Ranger armor. Congradulations! You've somehow managed to make one of the Wasteland's most deadliest creatures that much more dangerous!
Needed to unlock: [ERROR DATA NOT AVAILABLE]
Traits:
a) Snow Hound Diplomacy: For every Snow Hound you recruit in Wintertrot, you gain 3% charisma when dealing with Snow Hounds and are 2% more likely to join you
b) Teaching a Hound new tricks: Freshly recruited Snow Hounds are unarmored and untrained. You'll need to train them in the laws and regulations of the Steel Rangers. Steel Hounds take twice as much time to train then other races.
c) Paws for praise: Paws have some advantages over hooves, so Snow Hound Scribes will find it easier to write, take apart, and put together machinery.
d) Heavy Setter: Snow Hounds are much larger and stronger then most races other then dragons and buffalo; so can carry heavier weapons and other equipment.

4) Steel Buffalo: Tribal minded like the zebras, it is unknown if any live in Wintertrot. There bulk allows them to be equipped with heavy machinery and heavy armor. Also like some zebra tribes, they are close to nature able to derive potions and supplies from the landscape.
Needed to unlock: [ERROR DATA NOT AVAILABLE]
Traits:
a) Spiritual Awareness: Buffalo are close to their ancestors, 6% increase in offense when dealing with the "supernatural".
b)

5) Steel Gryphons: Gryphons are known to work as mercenaries and will fly in flocks. While it is technically plausible to recruit them. It be easier to just hire their services (It counts for the Award). Still if your really interested, finding abandoned Gryphon chicks or a lone Gryphon in need of help is your most likely path.
Needed to unlock: [ERROR DATA NOT AVAILABLE]
Traits:

6) Steel Dragons: Coming in all shapes and sizes, these guys are commonly seen as mercenaries, raiders, soldiers, or bankers do to their scaled bullet proof hide, and love of coin. Getting a Dragon on your team in no easy feat though, and keeping them fed with gemstones is a nightmare.
Needed to unlock: [ERROR DATA NOT AVAILABLE]
Traits:

7) Steel Changelings: Other than their shapechanging abilities making them perfect for spy missions, and their need to feed on emotions (love in particular), not much is known about their current location(s). It is presumed that like most insects (and Unity), they live in a hive-like culture possibly with a hive-mind that controls them. Even if you do find one, how are you going to convince it to join the rangers?
Needed to unlock: [ERROR DATA NOT AVAILABLE]
Traits:

8) Steel Minotaurs: Minotaurs are quite common in the wasteland. They work as mercenaries, grunts, and really any position that their physical prowers or terrifying physique is needed. Don't discount them for mindless brutes though, many have minds as sharp as their horns. As such they are a welcome addition to any group in the wasteland. These guys define the word "heavy", giving Hell Hounds a run for their money. Put a Minotaur in armor and give him a machine gun, you've got an instant tank.
Need to Unlock: [ERROR DATA NOT AVAILABLE]
Traits:

9) Alicorns: Alicorns are all associated with the Goddess of Unity and should be approached with caution. You'd be better of shooting them then trying to recruit.
Needed to unlock: The Death of the Goddess of Unity
Traits:

I thoroughly approve of this venture. To adventure!

4830044 Yay for an being overimaginative....and playing too many war games!

4936135 weird the chapter go? Wwwwaaaaaa

4536602 Just a reminder, that followers are still reading this and eagerly awaiting your return.

Do what you need to do to come back to this story.

Is the story dead? :applecry:

4786930 this would make a really good FTL style (rouge like) game.

This story better not be fuckin dead, do you know how hard it is to find a Fo:E story not just about the steel rangers, but one where the main character isn't some hippie who cries after every kill and angsts around for the entire story?! It's pretty hard.

6731611 I've been helping editing, but I haven't seen much activity in a while. He actually rewrote the chapter...parts of it anyway several times. Haven't checked since the summer though.

6731819 that's more than what I was expecting to be honest, Thanks for the tip off.

So is this story still going to be finished, or shall it be abandoned? I'do like to see what becomes of our three Rangers here...

Aw man I just found this story. And I've power read through it only for it to be on Hiatus! Laaaaame!

Update plz?

I take it this story is dead, hopefully not. I really enjoyed what I've read so far.

Hey there, just wanted to know if there's been any update for this story? Is it still on hiatus, is it cancelled?

8428776 It's pretty much dead at this point. I didn't want to abandon it, but I also don't have any drive to finish or continue it. Three years have passed and I don't think I'll be continuing, I had big plans, but ultimately I lost interest in both the story and Fallout Equestria.

8428821
That's a shame but I understand. Thank you for the response.

8428821
sorry to hear that the story has been canceled, do you think you'll ever continue the story eventually?

Too bad, it was a good story.

I think someone should start this back up from the beginning it was a great read and a shame it won’t ever be finished

Is it ok if I revive this story it was very interesting

9655877
That depends on how good you are as a writer, you aren't the first to offer to take up the mantle of ROWT. And nobody who did, has actually been able to continue it.

9840703
That was partly why I wanted to write FoE: RoWT. A lot of the stories either leaned towards the darker elements too much. Or were really poorly written. The initial Rangers of Wintertrot was not well written and it was my editor Lesolan that helped me revitalise the fic. I'd also wanted to do a story in a winter-themed environment, to truly make my story standout. A lot of the times, when I read FoE stories I felt like I was in the exact same place, and that could get boring after awhile.

Comedy was important for me, as I had seen stories that just went full on towards those dark and depressing elements like FoE: Project Horizons. And became utter slogs to read through, until I just gave up. New Pegas by Calbeck was a story that managed to inject plenty of humour, though I wasn't a fan of all the elements of that story. But it worked for me 95% of the time. I think the only story that managed to include lots of darker elements, without making them feel unnecessary was FoE: Murky Number Seven. Given the setting of the story, it fit thematically.

I've pretty much retired from writing at this point. And while it sucks that this story will never be finished by me. I am willing to hand it off to anyone skilled enough to write it. I believe my editor was looking to continue the story, but I haven't really kept in touch. Since I've drifted away from the MLP fandom a lot, as well as a lot of the friends I made here.

9840738
i hope one day someone does finish this, i still find myself coming back to it or the audio reading i found of it. I love cold style theme to that you gave this fic.

10734318
Oh, you found those old audio readings? Ah, those take me back ^_^. There was so much stuff planned for the story, but I don't think it's gonna get the ending it deserves and that sucks. I am retired from writing, but anybody who wants to continue need only contact me.

10734665
I hope someday someone approaches you and tries to finish this, i really did enjoy it while it lasted.

10734886
Why did it get canceled
