These would work well embedded at key points in the text at key points, as opposed to a non-explanatory preface that readers have to refer back to whenever a major scene changes.

Before I get into reading, I'd like to note that I detest songs in stories. Well, not quite; songs placed at the end of a chapter can be a nice way to finish up a chapter - no artificial emotion-inducing there! - but when you devote an entire chapter to what songs I should play around which characters, my optimism drains away.
Which isn't to say that I think what you've written is bad - I don't know, haven't read it - nor do I think that I expect it to be bad. I AM less optimistic as to its quality, however. When someone relies on outside influences to induce emotions, it gives the impression that he can't write them in on his own.
The exception is self-written songs, but even then it should be of the sort that can be read. Poetry. Maybe the occasional extremely ubiquitous song - someone whistling the star-spangled banner gives off the impression of being a patriotic American, but even then it shouldn't be there to INDUCE emotion - that's what the words on the screen are for. If songs exist in stories at all, they should exist to inform the plot (or characters, or maybe the setting) in some manner. This is a written medium. Don't distract me from the writing, or try to artificially enhance it.

Of course, I haven't even started on the story, so this could all be complete bullshit, but still. First impressions are important, and even if this turns out to be Wildbow-level writing, this gigantic song-list sours my impressions.
