Broomfield is a town that's going places. They've got a railroad now, which will make the town grow . . . but brings along a new problem: ponies not being aware of the train coming.

What they really need is a gate to prevent ponies from crossing in front of the train, but a gate means that somepony has to control it.

Rainbow Dash's birthday is tomorrow, and her friends are all scouring Canterlot Mall.

Make no mistake, most of them already have gifts lined up, but they want to show their appreciation for everything Dash has done over the past year. Including the pranks, the pointing and laughing, that time she made all their magic spiral out of control...

It'll definitely take something special to say everything they want to. It's just a matter of finding it.

Community service isn't exactly fun. Sunset Shimmer is learning that the hard way—especially when Saffron Masala keeps cooking extra meals that their soup kitchen couldn't pay people to eat. It's not fun, it's not worth it, and it's never ever ever going to change. And... for some reason, it seems Saffron's okay with that.

Now, six Wednesday nights out from the disastrous Fall Formal, Sunset decides that she might as well ask Saffron why.

In other words, it's a pretty terrible place and time for a renegade student of Princess Celestia to find herself. But Sunset Shimmer is nothing if not determined and resourceful. She will bend this world to her will.

That's the plan, anyway. Given how the heliocentric model is still a few millennia away from wide acceptance, maybe she can settle for finding happiness.
