Spike feels like a Dragon without purpose and without anything to offer his friends. He leaves Ponyville without warning his friends, in an attempt to find his purpose on his own.
Princess Luna finds Spike and shows him the nightmares that his friends have been having in his absence, in an attempt to convince him to return to Ponyville of his own free will. Spike learns that dreams are the quickest road to the heart.

On Hearths Warming eve Spike found himself alone in the library after a gut feeling told him that he needed to stay in Ponyville. But as the time ticked away and Spike's faith begins to falter, did he make the wrong choice and is doomed to spend Hearths Warming without his friends and family? or will Spike finally get the one thing he has always wanted?

The "Nightmare Rarity" arc in the comics has just ended and Ponyville must recover. Even more than the others, the Elements of Harmony must recover. And most of all Rarity, the Nightmare's main victim. But Spike faced his own ordeal, so after a few days rest he goes to visit Rarity where the two proceed to have a private chat. Rarity expresses her gratitude and apologizes for the vulnerabilities that allowed the Nightmare to use her. And then...the two discuss their own future. Rarity has made a decision. And as terrified as he is of rejection, Spike's long unspoken question is about to be answered.

Spike is tired of how the Mane Six are treating him, and after learning some devastating news, he finally snaps and runs away. Unbeknownst to him, his leaving home will start a chain of events that will forever change his life. And it all starts . . . with heavy metal.

Spike the number one assistant, has left his home. Feeling a bit lost, somewhat confident and unsure of what lies ahead the young drake begins his journey on the path to improvement. On the path to discover what he wants to do in his life aside from his services to Twilight. And as Spike goes through his travels on Equestria and beyond the young drake begins meeting ponies, griffons and other creatures across Equestria that in some way or another have a descent understanding of what he's now going through. And with each new meeting and experience Spike continues to grow.

With each meeting Spike learns something new and does his best to apply it to his new experiences. But as he continues through his journeys he never once forgets about those he left behind. They in turn will never forget about him. For they'll always be with him in heart, till the day he can return.

Taking Place during season 4, the mane 6 have once again gone to the Crystal Empire leaving behind a very depressed Spike who wonders if his friends really are his friends at all. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna decide to take Spike with them on their personal one week vacation.
