It's been only a short amount of time since the centaur, Tirek, razed the forest of Everfree to the ground, and was defeated by the very ponies he hated, being sent back into the belly of the earth from which he escaped. And in that time, life has mostly returned to normal for the citizens of Ponyville. Normal that is except for the recently promoted princess, Twilight Sparkle and her assistant Spike, the baby dragon. Neither of whom know quite how to go back to normal since the incident.

It's been three months since Twilight and Rainbow Dash became a couple, once a week they go out together leaving Spike alone in the library. Left with only his thoughts to make him company, Spike faces the greatest enemy that someone has: themselves.

"Then Twilight looked up at me with this shattered look, and I realized....
Her foal is dead on account of I let him realize that we’re all just Winonas."

The first draft was a co-bronze-medalist in the the MLPChan /fic/ writeoff for December 2012.

The talented Ponychan /art/ denizen Spirit Shine provided us with a beautifully poignant portrait of Spike's First New Year's Alone as a picture prompt (also: was gracious enough to let me use the image as a cover). I ran with it and decided to have Applejack kill Spike.

It's not as bad as it sounds. Luna's there to keep him company.

When you live forever, what do you do with your time?
Do you love and lose, win and fall, hope and curse?
Do you seek to outrun the truth or face it valiantly?
Twilight Sparkle is dead, never to return, never to smile or pout or have that twinkle, that sparkle in her eyes again. Twilight Sparkle is dead and together, two creatures born with eternal life, two creatures brought together by sorrow and circumstance must try to overcome the simple fact that she is dead, that she has passed on and left them all alone.

But perhaps, through death and the passing of a loved one, something else can bloom from the ashes.

I absolutely detest writing out descriptions for my stories because I suck at capturing what the story is truly about in them.
Anyway, this is my first romance story, involving Spike and Celestia, so it's a peculiar couple indeed. This is also my first truly sad story so I hope I captured some feels.

When Twilight is called away for yet another dangerous adventure, Spike refuses to be left behind again. After all, he's a dragon, isn't he? The most mighty and fearsome race of creature in all the land! Why should he have to stay home and fret while Twilight risks herself to save Equestria?

Inspired by the cover image which was drawn by the very talented dm29. I definitely recommend checking out his work.

Princess Twilight Sparkle is gone. Equestria was in danger of an invasion from another world, and she heroically entered the portal, closing it from the other side. Spike searched for her for years without success, but eventually he had to accept, dead or alive, she wasn't coming back. All the while Equestria was in danger with the Elements of Harmony missing. So Spike found himself a new purpose.

His intent? To locate someone suitable to be the next Element of Magic and the rest of the Elements of Harmony. To accomplish this, he attends the greatest gathering of magic wielders Equestria has ever known, which was Twilight's first and only major project as a princess: Twilight Sparkle's Institute for Magical Research.

Of course, moving to a new place alone is not easy, and being a scary dragon (even a pony sized one) makes it even harder. Spike has to handle hostile guards, frustrating coworkers, and a pompous prince he had never expected to deal with again.

Twilight has finally had the talk with Spike, and it's been quite some time since he's opened up. But when Spike starts carrying around a Rarity doll, it is clear that Spike hasn't let go of his crush on Rarity quite yet, and he may need another talking to.

But Twilight doesn't know about how much thinking the little dragon has been doing since then. Or just how much Spike values Rarity's attention, and how badly he wants to keep his love for her. Because even if it's just a plushie, to him, it's all he has left in the world.

And he doesn't want to let it go.
