Twenty-eight years have passed since Twilight has taken over for Celestia and Luna and now the night she dreads is here. The Gala is always boring but it's far worse when none of her friends are able to come since they all have responsibilities with even Spike saying he's too busy. Despite this, the Gala will change how she sees one of her oldest friends and give her the happy ending she had been looking for for years.

Spike has been hatched, and a young Twilight Sparkle has gone home for the day after doing it. A few weeks are left before school begins, and it's up to Celestia to care for the young dragon, and in doing so heal some old wounds.

Even the slightest changes in the past can have a significant effect on future events, case in point:
what if Spike was never raised by Twilight Sparkle? What if he was raised as a bonafide apple on Sweet Apple Acres, brother to Big Mac, Applebloom, and of course Applejack? What if his arrival as a hatchling had inadvertently prevented the deaths of Bright mac and Pear Butter?

Life is pretty unpredictable for me, but that alone is the predictable part of it. Pretty early on, I learned that I should expect the unexpected, and enjoy the brief moments of peace when they were there. Such an outlook helped me early on to keep from going crazy with all of the stuff that's happened to us all.

As the years passed though, I found my own source of peace: my closest friends.

My best friends were always there for me, and I for them. We held each other up when we fell below the surface of the sea of life, and offered friendly smiles and listening ears to each other when we needed it most. Even with all the insanity we weathered over the years, we became closer in spite of it...or, perhaps because of it. In a world of hoarding dragons, I may be the only one that cherished a small group of ponies over gold or jewels.

Note: Ponies are considered adolescent/mature at a much younger age than humans (six and fourteen, respectively). I've made an oversight on this, and I believe this explanation will fix that. Also, this will be a Spike-harem fic, but as with all my other submissions, there is no clop; just a heads up.

Spike and Twilight have been together for their whole lives, but what happens when the time comes when the friends are supposed to split apart? A long walk in the night reveals what the future holds for the duo.

Spilight.

Five years after the events of Shadow Play, things have changed for Spike. He now has a pair of wings, he's the size of a teenage dragon...and he had to watch Rarity be engaged to another pony. Naturally, this crushed him, but it's four years after the fact.

Still, he has several regrets over how he handled things with Rarity. Wanting to know how to get past this, he takes up Applejack's advice and asks Twilight how to talk to girls in a romantic way. She agrees to help him get past his issues, but Spike soon discovers feeling he didn't expect, buried feelings that were there for years. It catches him off guard big time.

The question will soon become: Should he go forward with those feelings?

The eternal night is over. The Elements of Harmony have vanquished Nightmare Moon, the world was saved, and Princess Luna has returned to the throne, this time to rule by her sister's side as equals.

The fear of her people, however, remains. She see's it in their eyes, hears it in their whispered words. She accepts it. To her, this is her penance for the pain she has caused. To sink into the night and rule from afar... this is how she will atone for the pain brought to her subjects... to her sister.

Little did she know that fate had other plans in store for her. Plans that would be set in motion by a single sentence, a sentence that would go on to change her life in an instant...

“Luna, I would like you to meet Spike Solaris. My son.”

When everyone else turns out to be too busy to do it, Spike volunteers to babysit Princess Flurry Heart for the day. He does his job all right for the most part, but things begin to shake up a bit when Sweetie Belle stops by and insists she help Spike take care of the baby. After some hesitation, Spike relents and decides to let Sweetie Belle help him. The day goes on and Spike and Sweetie Belle babysit Flurry Heart together, almost like their own little family.
