Fluttershy buys a painting from a new stall in Ponyville markets. It's a quaint picture of a rural cottage surrounded by grasslands and farm animals. It fills her with a curious feeling of longing that she hasn't felt before. Why should she? Her life is already like it.
But new animals start appearing around her home, and her own animals begin disappearing. Why and how she doesn't know, but she has to save them. She has to save all of them.

Warning: Philosophically dark.

A lot has happened since Celestia and Luna disappeared nine hundred years ago. There are no wars, no diseases, no pain, no death. Princess Twilight, Discord, and Spike do everything to ensure that the utopia continues.

But even the most ideal paradises have ponies that wish it wasn't so.

Following a Changeling attack that scatters every resident in Ponyville, Applejack holes up in her family home with only Apple Bloom for support. The doors and windows have been boarded shut. A thick fog covers everything in sight. Soon the first visitor comes to her door.

Now the only question is whether they're actually who they say they are.

After years of hiding in the Everfree forest, Fluttershy emerges to a very different Ponyville. It seems as though everypony is gone. She knows only one thing, Discord has been living in her cottage, and he and Angel Bunny are all shes got now that everypony seems to have vanished from Ponyville.

This is a universe where after Twilight and friends gave up the elements, Discord took advantage of it, and everypony was forced to leave Ponyville. Fluttershy blamed herself for the incident and blocked it from her memory. She now returns to Ponyville and must pick up the pieces.

Decades after the founding of Equestria, the nation faces an existential threat -- a war with the dragons.

The dragons have proposed a truce. Luna and Discord are uncertain, but Celestia insists that they must give the dragons the benefit of the doubt, and accept the truce.

This turns out to be a mistake.

Hanahaki, also known as The Unrequited Love Curse, is a disease that affects those with unrequited love. Those who are afflicted with it will cough up their beloved's favorite flower's petals, and as the disease gets worse, whole flowers.

The only known cures are for the loved one to return their feelings, or to have it removed, causing the victim to lose all memories of their love.

If they don't, they'll die.

A shame Discord became afflicted with it.

These are the final pages of the diary of Fluttershy, collected from her home and from the waters of the pond by her retreat. We hope she returns to us soon.

Fluttershy has been having a recurring nightmare about her friends begging her to 'not trust him' and to 'help them before it's too late'.
At first, it seems that perhaps this is just one of those nightmares that Fluttershy has all the time and it's nothing to worry about. Discord assists her in erasing the unpleasant dream memories from her mind.
Yet, this dream simply won't be forgotten.
Fluttershy is then faced with the question...is seeing really believing, or can she truly not believe her eyes?

(This story takes place sometime after Princess Twilight Sparkle and before Twilight's Kingdom.
It was written after Twilight's Kingdom premiered and before Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks premiered. Any similarities are purely coincidental.
Furthermore, the relationship between Discord and Fluttershy in this story is very much platonic.)
