Sombra's Playlist (For and By the Shadow King)

Hey there! First off, I want to apologize for not putting up any recent work here on the site. Yes, I have been working on the new chapter of A Pup Named Fenrir as well as the next story in my "When Darkness Falls" head-canon series. I'm just feeling burned out and have decided to take a short break while I refuel. Don't worry, y'all are stuck with me...for now...

Sombra's Playlist (For and By the Shadow King) · 4:12am Oct 25th, 2022

Any-who, this was a little side-thing that I thought up while in between writing. I wanted to start this off with some songs that I think that my version of Sombra would enjoy:

“Hail to the King”-Avenged Sevenfold: Not only is this an epic banger but I consider it Sombra's unofficial theme song. Heh, I can imagine him coming out like a WWE wrestler while this is blaring in the background.

“Animal I Have Become”-Three Days Grace: Sombra's certainly made quite the transformation and this song brilliantly illustrates it

“Enjoy the Silence”-Depeche Mode: I think this encapsulates Sombra's true desires, that being to settle down with Twilight and just enjoy being with her. If you want to subscribe to the drug use interpretation, then it works to describe how he views the purple alicorn as something to dull his pain and make him forget about everything else.

“The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988”-Johann Sebastian Bach: A beautiful piece of symphonic brilliance...and a cheap Silence of the Lambs reference.

“Dig”-Incubus: Oddly enough, I associate this song with Sombra and Celestia instead of Sombra and Twilight. They have a very strained and complicated relationship that can hopefully be mended one day. Hopefully.

“Midnight, the Stars and You”-Ray Noble and His Orchestra: All work and no play makes Sombra a dull colt.

“Only You (And You Alone)”-The Platters: C'mon, you guys know the drill. Twibra...!

“We’ll Meet Again”-Vera Lynn: A classic 1930's tune about hope and something I can see Sombra listening to morosely as he tries to get his issues sorted out so he can get back to his purple paramour.

“Behind Blue Eyes”-The Who: Nopony knows what it's like to be the bad stud, to be the sad stud behind red eyes.

“I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire”-The Ink Spots: Sombra has lost all ambition for conquest and revenge and now just wants to set the flame in Twilight's heart. She is really his one desire and wants her to be the one that she loves. Twibra foreverrrrrrr!

“Sorcerer’s Apprentice”-Paul Abraham Dukas: Aside from being an enchanting piece from my favorite childhood movie (Fantasia), I also found humor in it as Sombra was also the apprentice to a sorcerer. Except there was betrayal and murder instead of a cartoon mouse and a magic hat.

“Hurt”-Johnny Cash: To this day, this cover gives me chills. Like Johnny Cash, Sombra is an aging (1,000+ year old) rebel that is looking back on his life and all of his many regrets.

“Someone to Watch Over Me”-Ella Fitzgerald: Yep, another Twilight-centric song, plus it again reinforces the idea that Sombra is a stallion out of time.

“Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien”-Edith Piaf: Another classic from another legendary singer, this number translates to mean, “No, I Do Not Regret Anything”.

“A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square”-Nat King Cole: There have been many covers of this song but I grew up listening to the Nat King Cole version (thanks Grandma!)

And here are some songs I can picture Sombra singing covers of:

“Hell to Your Doorstep”-The Count of Monte Cristo (musical): As soon as I heard this *snap!* a lightbulb went off in my head and I knew that I'd found the primary anthem for Sombra. Its themes of outrage, betrayal and single-minded vengeance are just too perfect.

“Mordred’s Song”-Blind Guardian: A tune portraying a more sympathetic version of Mordred from Arthurian myth and also ties in nicely with this version of Sombra. What really struck me about this song, aside from the "bardic metal" quality, a nice mix of fantasy and European folk music combined with power metal guitar shredding, are some of the lyrics, i.e., "why am I alone", "pain inside is rising", "no one asks if I want it"/"if I like it", and "turn off the light"/"and murder the dawn".

“The Man I used to Be”-The Count of Monte Cristo (musical): Like "Hell to Your Doorstep", this just seemed perfect as a triumphant post-reformation ballad for Sombra.

“Ready As I’ll Ever Be”-Tangled: The Series: I can picture Sombra rallying his multi-species army to march on Canterlot and sate his righteous vengeance, leading to his fateful battle with the Royal Sisters and his millennium-long imprisonment. Sombra would fill the Varian role, Princess Garnet as Ariana, Princess Celestia as Cassandra and Princess Luna as Rapunzel, with various unnamed soldiers providing backup vocals.

Annnnd, that's what I've got so far. If I think up more, I might put up a revised list and if there are more fitting songs, then please feel free to put them in the comments down below. Thanks!

Stay groovy, colts and fillies!

Love,

MisterEdd

P.S. TWIBRA! 😜
