Social media and me · 11:59pm Oct 15th, 2022

Social media and I.... well let's just say we've generally never gotten along.

I'm part of the generation that saw the early beginning of the internet. I remember the screechy dial-up modems, when you needed a landline to connect to the internet and all that ancient crud. I remember when you needed several floppy disks to play a game and a time when a 500-megabyte hard drive was just way too much space. What on earth were you going to do with all that space? :rainbowlaugh:

I remember when Myspace was a big thing, GeoCities was how you made your webpage, and forums were called bulletin boards. Wait what do you mean you don't know what forums are? God lord I'm old. :facehoof:

So when all the big social media platforms started making their entry, I was already pretty "eh not my thing" as a fairly anti-social introvert who saw no point in trying to meet new people easily and instantly.

The only social media platform for the longest time I initially joined was Twitter. I resisted long and hard joining Facebook. The rest? I don't even really look at them.

I only finally joined Facebook because most of my family was on it by then and they kept announcing gatherings and such only on Facebook, basically assuming all of us were on it, forgetting I wasn't. My late sister (on which Foxy Stripes and Dew Doe are heavily based) was the only one who kept realizing it and told me about them, often starting with "oh right, you're not on Facebook."

So I finally caved in 2013 and got on it.

So for a while, I was on both Facebook and Twitter. Eventually, I even took to Tumblr mostly because I saw how good it was for doing my pixel comics.

However, I quickly noticed that all three platforms were as I had long suspected, not my thing. I'm not going to go into anything controversial here, but let's just say I often felt like watching insanity left and right. I began toning down my use of them and eventually completely quit Tumblr and now have all but abandoned Facebook, only skimming the feeds for any family and friend announcements. The same has now happened to Twitter, the platform I've been on the longest. I don't post anything there anymore and just occasionally skim the feeds. I even went so far as to remove all social media apps from my phone because that's all I use my phone for, a phone.

Okay, I tell a lie, I did post three tweets in the past two months regarding stuff I had done on Pokemon Sword. So there may be hope for Twitter yet. :rainbowlaugh:

Facebook might not be completely out of the picture yet. I have sometimes enjoyed telling about crazy things that have happened to me in games, especially Crusader Kings and any other Paradox titles. Granted in those cases I've treated it more as blogs like the one I'm writing now, than any kind of "hey look what I'm doing now" or any kind of announcements or political and religious beliefs, beliefs I firmly keep under lock and key as I consider them private and nobody's business except my own. I'm Nordic; we are like that. :pinkiehappy:

I've actually been considering posting here on my blogs about that. I honestly enjoy blogging more than just making a quick post about the latest news or whatever.

Heck, I still have my LiveJournal account which I haven't used in years. Anybody remember LiveJournal? Anyone.....

God dammit I'm old. :twilightangry2:
