A scene out of the new generation IDW My Little Pony comic.
In it, they say that Princess Celestia and Princess Luna imprisoned Discord, apparently in glass this time, with no mention of his being reformed. This leads me to think that in this telling, Discord went back to his old ways, possibly following Fluttershy's death. Somewhere along the line, he makes good his escape.
And when Discord escapes he finds that magic no longer exists. And what does he do about it? Apparently nothing, that is until magic is rekindled. Shortly after this, he helps himself to one of the crystals. Apparently, he wants the world to stay the way it was. Which makes no sense whatsoever... except...
What happened to Cloudsdale? When magic ceased to be it would have devastated Cloudsdale. Sure there would be plenty of chaos, but that's not the sort of chaos Discord likes.
Could Discord's end game be to break Twilight's spell and undue the crystals? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

i agree this is just what Discord would want you to think.
There is the possibility Discord waiting to die. Something that’s only possible if there is no magic, then he can join Fluttershy in the afterlife.
With magic back so is his immortality.
This shows Twilight really messed up. If Discord was without magic then her Crystals stopped all magic, including the Dragons Those huge dragon bodies aren’t biologically possible without magic nor them bathing in lava.
So what happened when Magic poofed and suddenly all those dragons in the Dragon lands weren’t heat resistant anymore?
Similar situation with the Changelings according to the comics they were more magic then biological.
I hope the Hippogriffs/Sea ponies didn’t suddenly switch when the magic ended.
The more I think about the worst it gets, Twilight Sparkle ended up being far worst then any of the villains.

I don't think there was a total lack of magic. After all, ponies were still getting cutie marks. Still, though, I feel like the writers really didn't think through the implications of what a near-total lack of magic might do to Equestria. As for Twilight, surely she must have realized what would happen. Cloudsdale without magic would just fall apart and every pegasus in the air would plummet to their doom. The Chrystal Empire would collapse overnight. Smaller dragons would survive but they'd lose their fire magic and be forced to migrate out of the dragon lands. Every single race that was in some way dependent on magic would suffer and the entire world would be in upheaval. The fact that they now measure years by the cycle of the moon is telling as well.
A thought I just had on this... if what is being presented here is indeed canon to the franchise we could be looking at an AU.
