    One Year

It's hard to believe it's been a year since my dad died. Sometimes it feels like a decade ago, sometimes it feels like it was just last week.

Missy's Wager · 9:50pm Oct 3rd, 2022

"Yo! Penn! Wait up!"

Missy pushed herself to fly a little faster to catch up with her friend as he paced urgently down the hall, headphones in both ears and a laptop bag slung over her his shoulder. He didn't seem to hear her or notice her at all until she flew out in front of him, waving her arms to catch his attention.

"HEY!"

"Oh, hey..." he gave a melancholy smile as he slowed his pace enough for her to keep up with him. "What's up, Missy?"

"Well, I was just wondering how long we're gonna have to sit on that cliffhanger you left us!" Missy folded her arms with a pout. "Seriously, it's been MONTHS since you last updated Multiverse!"

"S-sorry about that..." Penn rubbed awkwardly at the back of his head. "I've been wanting to work on it, really! It's been driving me nuts and I feel like I'm gonna explode if I don't start writing out my ideas again! I'm going to get to it as soon as I wrap up my to-do list."

"Great!" Missy grinned. "So what's on the list? Let's get it done as fast as we can!"

Penn hummed to himself as he began counting on his fingers. "Well, first I need to go to Calculus and Chemistry... check if there's any homework... I've missed so many assignments I'm failing most of my classes."

Missy nodded. "Okay, not great, but you're smart enough to catch up! That sounds simple e-"

"Then I need to go work doing deliveries tonight, probably for as long as I can. I've got my monthly tuition payment and a few other bills coming out soon and I'm flat broke."

Missy felt her confidence in Penn's promise failing. "Okay, so not tonight then-"

"Then I need to fix that slow oil leak that started a few days ago. Pray it's just the gasket and not the actual oil pan that needs replacing, I can't afford to replace the whole pan! And THEN I need to make enough cash to replace the throttle body, since that's also been giving me trouble and making the engine run rougher..." Penn continued, nearly catching himself rambling off into car talk. "Since that car is both my home AND my means of making a living, I CAN'T let it get damaged by bad parts and leaks."

Missy cringed as Penn's hand came up, slapping himself in the forehead. "By the time I can afford those parts, my phone bill will be coming out of my account, I bet, and I'll need to make sure I have enough to pay it, so that's even LONGER that any and all free time is gonna be dedicated to delivering food!"

"I think I understand-"

Penn took a deep breath. "Of course, by then even MORE homework will have piled up, so I'll need to take a couple days off to catch up, then work furiously a couple more days to make up for that so I can continue to eat regular meals..." He took a deep breath. "If I can't afford to get an apartment, I at least need to fix the heater so I can keep a LITTLE warm before winter hits, Utah doesn't mess around with the colder months!" He groaned. "Ugh, I would have killed for a nice fleece blanket last night, and it's barely October!"

"OKAY, I GET IT!" Missy shouted, finally cutting off his tirade. "Your to-do list is longer than my arm and almost all of it is critical to your continued survival!"

Penn let out a long sigh. "Yeah... that about sums it up. I thought I'd fall into a rhythm once the semester started, but things just... keep mounting and piling up as fast or faster than I can deal with them." He put a hand to his forehead again. "Honestly, if I'd thought ahead I would have taken more time to build up savings before I started classes... A lot of this would be easier if I'd made smarter money choices."

Missy took her own turn to sigh and roll her eyes. "Well, hindsight is 20/20, and 2020 SUCKED. Just gotta keep moving forward, right?"

Penn smiled and reached up to ruffle her hair. "That's right. I can get ahead, it's just going to be an uphill fight for a while. Think you can be patient until I have free time to write again?"

Missy tried her best to put on a pout. "Fine... but you better give it your all! I'm not gonna wait forever!" She floated up a little further, pointing an accusatory finger at him. "It's October the Third! I'm going to give you until November First to 'get ahead' and put out an update! After that, I'm haunting your sorry butt until you put out an update! Got it?"

Penn gritted his teeth slightly, but she could see the slightest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Is that a challenge, little Missy?"

"You KNOW it is!" Missy declared, outshining his slight smile with a toothy grin of her own. "And if you lose, I'm gonna dole out a punishment you're REALLY gonna hate!"

Penn raised an eyebrow. "And what's that?"

"I have NO idea, but it's gonna suuuuuuuuuck!" she teased. "Maybe I'll go on the blog and post your whole planning document for the fellow adventurers to see!"

"I already-"

"UNCENSORED!"

Penn gasped in horror. "You wouldn't... that would spoil all the biggest twists!"

Missy floated down to eye level again, smirking and giving him a slight boop on the nose. "Try me, buddy. It's Halloween Season and I'm stressed as heck as it is. I'd LOVE to cause a little mischief and blow off some steam."

Penn narrowed his eyes. For a moment she could see him wavering, but his resolve soon steeled itself.

"You're on, Missy."

Hey there, fellow adventurers! Missy here!

I know it was a bit of a roundabout way of saying it, but we just wanted to let you know we're still here! Penn's been on the ropes lately burning the candle at both ends with school and work, but I know my buddy, and if he doesn't get back to writing soon he's gonna lose it! So we're going to give it our all to get you guys an update for The Multiverse in a Nutshell by the end of the month! Penn needed SOMEBODY to tell him to get creative again! He's been holding on, but he hasn't really been LIVING, you know? All work and no play makes Penn a dull author! So I took it upon myself to get him back into proper gear!

So for now, enjoy this little glimpse into the life of an author and his characters! One way or another, I'll see you soon! I'm a spirit of the season, after all!

Lotsa love,
Missy <3
