On Opaline... · 1:08am Sep 30th, 2022

Hasbro took a step back from the Disney logic of "Princess=Good, Queen=Evil" in the latter stages of Friendship is Magic, as well as G5.

After eight episodes, I look at Opaline and wonder who's going to write her better; the showrunners or the fans.

So far she's reminded me of the Stepmother from Cinderella, the Queen from Snow White, and Mother Gothel from Tangled.

The villains who know they're evil, and are such for the sake of evil (and the audience) is a trope that might fly for ten year olds and under, but great villains are those whose motivations you can understand, the ones you love to hate.

I hope the writers can make Opaline live up to those comparisons.

still surprises me that she's evil. Like, I never thought we'd see another evil alicorn after luna became nightmare moon in fim.

History repeats itself more than you might think.

I just hope they can do her justice.

totally. Hopefully, they'll find a way to make her join good as its quite unfortunate she's evil.

I'll bet on Misty's redemption before Opaline's.

Yeah, if Opaline is still holding onto that plot after so many years, I don’t see a reformation happening. If the show didn’t have young kids in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if she ended up getting killed. At least if they were smart. Seals tend to fail eventually.

How much is this bitch based on Amber Heard?

Sealed evil in a can is a trope with a long history of failing miserably.

I've only gotten 3 of the newest episodes under my belt but I think it's safe to say that I don't particularly care for Opaline. As someone else mentioned she feels evil for the sheer sake of being evil. Also her color job is too neon for my taste, and sometimes appears kinda splotchy in the actual show.

Now Misty, she's still a bit too vibrant color wise but she appears to have more to her personality just being the crony.

That said, I had a thought about who might make a decent villain, and I considered Sheriff Hitch, in particular his occasional bouts of rule-based paranoia. I envision a situation where he starts his spiraling, but unlike in the episodes Sunny and Co. aren't available to bring him back down, they might be off exploring some old ruins or visiting Zephyr Heights. They come home to Maretime Bay to find it in a state of total lock-down, Hitch more-or-less forced martial law and anyone who so much as blinks inappropriately according to the new rules (an insanely long list that even Twilight might consider slightly excessive) is subjected to house arrest or something.
