Exotic fruits part 2: mangosteen · 7:49pm Jul 2nd, 2022
First it was cherimoya. And then today I was surprised to see fresh mangosteen at my local Chinese grocery store (Same place I bought the cherimoya. They also had rambutan, lychee, and longan for sale).
I haven't had mangosteen since I was last in Singapore. They're ultratropical fruits that almost exclusively grow in tropical Southeast Asia. Normally they're pretty dead looking by the time they're imported to the US, but these looked really fresh so out of impulse I bought a bag for...wait for it...$21. I know, I was pretty shocked when it got weighed on the scale at the cashier!
But I ate two just now and they're pretty fresh and sweet, just like I remember them to be. They're just as exotic as durian, but with a much more agreeable smell and taste. Remove the thick peel (like an orange peel), and then eat the soft, pulpy white segments inside, spitting out the seeds. It's sweet and floral tasting. Can recommend.
Update: just ate a bad one that was bitter
Oof
Oh, you like trying exotic fruits, too? There's actually this great YouTube channel entirely dedicated to the topic:

I think I’ve seen that channel before. Fruit tasting can be an expensive hobby especially when you live in a non tropical location!
