Cost of the Crown (Song) · 9:38pm May 3rd, 2022
Original Version: Cost of the Crown by Debra F. Sanders and Mercedes Lackey
Key:
Thorax
I’ve heard the stars are beautiful seen from outside the cavern’s walls
They say they shine with great brilliance, ever above the kingdom’s halls
I may watch them from my window, yet their bright, enchanting glow
Reminds me painfully of freedom I lost so long ago
The royal antlers of bright orange are light above my brow
I once only considered the joyful spirits I could endow
But as the mantle passed to me, for which I had not been bred
I found it heavy on my heart, though light against my head
I claim to be the head of state, but truly I am the least
A true King would know his people fed before he sat to feast
A good King would know his people safe, before he takes his rest
Thinks twice and thrice and then again before just one request
I treat them all my family, and it’s them I swear I will defend
It is my solemn duty to be both Monarch and trusted friend
Though of my family, ranks high and low, from mere child to above,
The dearest are ones who choose to return my care with love
The fiercest is my soldier, quick to pounce at my command,
Who gives me aid and friendship, who always understands
But my people still have needs it would do me well to not deny
When it necessary I must send my family to danger, maybe to die
My friends, my loves, my child, it matters not, it seems
I still must sacrifice them all so pawn may become Queen
They know and they forgive me, which is more than I expect
With willing minds and love in their hearts they let fire wrap their necks
The tears that ache my eyes are all the ones a King can’t shed
Tears I shall cry in silence as I mourn those that are dead
Oh goddesses beyond the stars, if you can hear my hallowed cries,
If you still have compassion, don’t make me send any more to die…
If you still have compassion… please don’t make me send more to die…

Yeah. I debated doing this with Chrysalis but I figured she wouldn't be quite as torn up about it

Well, yeahhhh... but that's more Hero's Chrissy, not mine
Wow, haven't heard that song in years.
