I deleted the previous blog post after I looked closer and found the original fundraising site to be shady. This one is through gofundme.com, which is a known quantity. So let’s try this again:
Hey, folks. Longtime readers of Turnabout Storm may recall that the story was originally written through its first 44 chapters by RavenRegios, aka ChromeRegios. To make a long story very short, I started helping her edit it and then took it over when school and life got to be too much for her, but we’ve stayed in touch ever since.
She lives in the Philippines with her husband and son. They were hit hard by the pandemic, losing a couple businesses they were trying to start up due to very severe lockdowns and what amounted to martial law. At this point, their home needs some TLC and they’re both working odd jobs, but money is scarce. I’ve set up a fundraiser to help out:
Please contribute if you can. The dollar is strong against the Philippines Peso (PHP) right now, so even a little can go a long way for them. Full disclosure: The way it will work is, it’s under my name, and I’ll send whatever donations are received later. The reason for that is the site is not available through the Philippines, and those that are... well, that last site skimmed 18% of donations, which sounds like a racket to me.
18% Yeouch! That's almost a fifth of the money.

Exactly. I just wish I’d looked closely before I made a donation myself. Oh, and there was a 30-day delay on the withdrawal of funds once the fundraiser closed. Yeah, that’s the definition of shady.

Even if they are legit that's probably a move to milk every penny they can. They get interest and hope you forget about it so they get to keep it longer.
I'm so glad stuff like this is easy in Canada's banking system. I can send money via email or text for free to anyone with a Canadian bank account. Hell, you can even set it up to be automatically deposited. Makes stuff like splitting a food order at work easier with debit than cash.
