Exclusivity sucks, but... · 2:44am Apr 21st, 2022

So a couple days ago I picked up an Oculus Quest 2, and let me say...

Resident Evil 4 VR is genre-defining.

The game is 17 years old, has been ported to every gaming platform known to man, and yet, this could be the best way to experience it. The fact that they took an over-the-shoulder perspective with tank controls and translated it this well to VR is a simply incredible feat. This is one of the best VR titles to date, and should be the bar for VR shooters going forward.

It would also seem that I have finally begun to get my "VR legs" so-to-speak. I've been playing on full Immersive Mode, and can go 1-2 hours with only very mild discomfort. I can't go three hours, because the headset battery (wireless) doesn't last that long.

The other game that I picked up when I want to take it easy is Walkabout Mini Golf. A game about... Mini golf.

The physics are very convincing, and barely a round of 18 holes go by where I don't struggle to not turn into Happy Gilmore.

Ooh. I have no idea what all that technical stuff is but it sounds cool. Have fun!

Isn't that the version the developers cut all the flirting out of?

I just got to the cabin ambush, which I thought was the first instance of that (Luis calling out Ashley's "ballistics").

Eh, I can't say I'll miss it. Like, Resident Evil's writing has always been unbearably campy, so I'll gladly say goodbye to dialogue that has honestly aged pretty badly.

So what you're saying is that now we have a third actually good VR game?

It's funny for me of all people to say this, considering I've never played the game, but from what I've heard, RE4 has been a genre-defining game for a very long time. It was one thing to break the mold and redefine what a Resident Evil game is back when it was first released. Not to mention the game's dynamic difficulty that adjusts based on how well you're doing. Then there was a solid few years when the Wii port was the best version of the game because, HD graphics be damned, the WiiMote controls were simply the best way to play it for a while.

And now it has a VR version, and... wait, wasn't RE7 also really good in VR?

If you wanna try a fun VR game (though you’ll need a good computer and an Oculus Link to play it from Steam), I’d suggest “Deadness”.

Oh, and “The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners” is great too!
