The name H.P. Lovecraft is synonymous with thinking man's horror. He turned his greatest fears into some of mightiest works of fear and terror that have been ever set down on the page and in doing so gave birth to an entire genre of literature and placed terms such as "eldritch abomination" into usage. It is thus no small wonder that many writers on this site have attempted to copy his style through both original and derivative works of their own.
There is no shame in emulating a master of their craft, and by all standards H.P. Lovecraft was a master of terror.
One of the better stories written in the style of Lovecraft is It Sleeps Beneath Foal Mountain by the7Saviors. The story is done in the best traditions of the intellectual horror. Filled to overflowing with rich vocabulary, ponderous tomes, and discussions of the nature of reality.
We follow everyone's favourite intellectual, Twilight Sparkle, as her questions lead her further and further from the light and into the dark and twisted back corners of the nature of reality where she comes to question not only the nature of her own existence, but the nature of existence itself. The ending is grimly satisfying and makes the reader ask the question, "Would I have done as she did? Had I heard the song and read the words, would I have followed that same path?"
Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Read It Sleeps Beneath Foal Mountain by the7Saviors. It is well worth the read.
Just don't read it before bedtime.
