The last research paper I worked on has published at last.

The process is REALLY slow. I finished all my work on this 3 years ago.

    https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2316969121

This one uses a lot of my histology and in-situ hybridization with RNAscope results.

But no more science for me. Now I build houses and driveways... and rip them apart too! It's a sort of yin-yang thing I've got going here.

A comedic scene from a new Clouseua story I'm fiddling with...

I just came up with this, and imagining Peter Sellers delivering the line had me laughing for 5 minutes straight.

Clouseau, "For you see, the murderer was... the bullet!"

    Guy in room, "The bullet?"

Clouseau, "Of course, no one would suspect the bullet of firing itself!"

Woman in room, "But that... that's madness!"

THE PIRATE KING BREAKS THE NETFLIX ANIME ADAPTATION CURSE!!!

Only the Pirate King could do it...

It's as good as possible. You cannot do such a goofy anime any better than this, and it's GREAT! I friggin LOVED it.

Last call for Bronycon items up on Ebay!

I'll be delisting all remaining MLP items Sept 1st to focus entirely on selling my huge stash of collectible magazines, which take up vastly more space than the MLP items. Everything here fits into a single flat box I can pick up with one hand. The magazines... weigh over 700 lbs total. Sooooo, kinda makes sense to deal with those ASAP!

G5 movie died with a whimper · 2:19pm Apr 15th, 2022

Well, after more than 6 months, it's clear that VIRTUALLY NO ONE watched the movie.

Only 3.4k total ratings on IMDB (compare with 21k for the "Halo" series which just started).

It ranks #2985 in popularity... lower than some old bad B movies. There was no spark for this thing. It looked like generic CGI, the story was bland and uninteresting, the villain was even less interesting and less threatening than a Diamond Dog.

Not even EqD desperately trying to prop it up could drag more than a fraction of the original G4 fanbase to watch it.

Basically: "It's dead, Jim." And really, after watching some of it (I was too bored to finish more than 20 minutes of it) I can conclude nothing of value was lost.

I won't have you slandering old bad B-movies.

Also, the interest and threat of the villain was supposed to be that he was literally just Trump, but then that guy went out with a whimper. Unintentional Period Piece, I believe the term is.

I wouldn't use IMDb as the be-all and end-all of a film's popularity. As vote brigading shows, IMDb's scores are incredibly easy to manipulate.

Sprout wasn't supposed to be Trump. He is supposed to be an analogy for people who rise to power by exploiting the fears of others. The physical resemblance to Trump is, I suspect, coincidental.

5650916
I kind of doubt something like that could happen accidentally; he would have been POTUS when work on the movie started. The fact that he's exactly the sort of person you say they were going for and was still in the public consciousness speaks volumes.

5650917
Absolutely nothing, and I do mean nothing, is coincidental anymore.

And it is very tiresome.

If IMDb is your source, then I dunno if anyone'll take this with a grain of salt, XD

5650917
People other than Trump have exploited fear to fuel their own political and national ends. There was that one chap who ran Germany for a bit, now what was his name again? Ilther? Hilter?

5650986
In all fairness, the getup Sprout started wearing once he was actually in charge of something is more Gaddafi. Another authoritarian who's recent enough that the show's actual target audience might potentially have heard of him.

5651010
Interesting interpretation. I thought the uniform was more 'banana republic dictator' than anything else, but that's just my interpretation.

5650916 You're missing the point that the NUMBER of ratings is very small. Only 3.4K TOTAL. That's EXCEEDINGLY LOW. Some absolutely AWFUL shows and movies that were panned by EVERYONE have more than that.

5650947 Shall we take a look at Rotten Tomatoes, then? There are few other places to go, because the movie wasn't even released in theaters and Netflix doesn't release viewer numbers. 11 critics, and several hundred audience ratings on RT.

Again, a VERY SMALL AUDIENCE. Fact is fact, no one cared about this movie.

I'm not paying much attention to the RATING, because as people admit, the reviews themselves can be manipulated. But the total numbers CANNOT, and those tell much more of the story of the actual impact a particular show has. If no one watched it, it didn't matter.

5651050
May I ask why RANDOM words in the COMMENT are written in BLOCK CAPITALS? I reiterate that a low number of reviews or ratings does not neccesarily represent low viewership; I suspect the EqG movies have similarly low ratings.

5651105 In general, it follows pretty closely. The correlation over hundreds of movies and TV shows is more than statistically strong enough to draw conclusions.

Production companies themselves make use of such data, and we can also follow on how much post-production material has been made. A very successful show or movie will be followed up with merchandise, and a lot of it. No one allows a viable market to go untapped.

There is also the fact that no additional new fandom has appeared. If anything, the remaining fandom fizzled out even faster. There's a follow-up series, by that's par for the course for pretty much any corporate property. Even abject failures of the worst kind somehow manage to get series made half the time.

The first couple episodes (if you consider 5 minute strips 'episodes') of the new Youtube show "Tell Your Tale" managed to garner between 370K and 1 million views (which is a rather weird up and down, but then the latest has only managed 127k in 2 days. That's a sign of quickly waning interest. And by a strange coincidence, right now there is a My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale livestream happening on Youtube... and there are exactly 16 people watching. That's a DISMAL livestream number. Random Youtubers with a few thousand followers manage more than that.

Then you can look at the ratio of likes to total views. The highest-viewed episode of "Tell Your Tale" with 1 million views... has only 7.8k likes. One can imagine what the dislike number would be if Youtube had a backbone. No comments, but they get away with the 'can't have comments on a kid's channel' excuse. In fact, it's hard to get any public comments on this series, because outside of Youtube, it's like it doesn't exist.

5651136
Hmmm. Well, with the Netflix series and the next film yet to launch, there's time for it to bounce back. There's still plenty of G5 content being produced on here, with the downward bounce being comparable to the downtime between EqG 1 and RR.

A very successful show or movie will be followed up with merchandise, and a lot of it. No one allows a viable market to go untapped.

The trouble with saying this about MLP is that the causality goes the other way around. The shows and movies are merchandise while the toys are the main product.

Eh, personally I liked it well enough, for the most part. Thought it had potential, at least; I'm still waiting to see what they make of it in the main series, and the upcoming special.

5651723
I think the series isn't going to do much either. Speaking purely by the technical bits the voice acting and animation are not as great as the movie or G4. The plot seemed contrived, the script was weird, etc. Though I believe they are going to address the crystal issue.

5676180
I found the series start special, ah... less auspicious than the movie, yeah. I'm still holding out hope, though, and the YouTube series has been kind of hit or miss so far from episode to episode. I suppose we'll just have to see how things go.
And we still have fanfiction. :)

5676183
To be honest, the only reason I'm still here is the fanfiction and my sister who watches G4 all the time (she's 6).

5676185
Heh, fair enough. :)
I mean, personally, sure, for MLP I've watched and plan to continue watching canon content (though even then, I've not seen and read everything that's been released) -- but there are other works where I've never personally watched/played/read/whatevered the canon work, and have no plans to change that, and still enjoy fanfiction of them.

5676180 The G5 series has started? I didn't even hear a word about it anywhere.

5676238
It's on Netflix. The only reason I know anything about it is because my sister found it in the kid's section on Netflix (she's 6).

5676243 Huh. What I found is that it was going to start Sept 26th. Maybe they decided to just dump it... or are these just preliminary shorts?

5676319
No, they had a full 40 minute start called "Chapter One: Season One." It was called Make Your Mark.
