My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale - Some Very Quick Thoughts · 4:42pm Apr 7th, 2022
It's... not terrible.
To be fair, there are only four episodes available at the moment, and it's very hard to quantify what amounts to five-minute shorts.
But, they're not awful. They don't seem to "shit" on anything (and anyone who says they do, well, they'd better give me more than that weird G4 worship or whatever). Sure, the animation is strange and not necessarily top-tier, but it's not somehow intrinsically offensive or elaborately dismissive of itself.
I know that there were some comparisons to Pony Life - to be honest, since I didn't really watch Pony Life, I'm not qualified to judge that comparison.
At the very least, Tell Your Tale seems to share a fair bit of continuity with the movie, with a few callbacks here and there, but its handling of some of its characters and side-characters seem to suggest a push towards extension of its lore, possibly leading into the main series.
So... yeah. It's not horrible, horrific, or anything of that sort. Passable.
To me, the best way to describe this series is they’re the equivalent to the breadsticks or salads served before the main course meal. They’re not terrible, they’re just enough to satiate your hunger.
Props to the new voice actors and actresses. I’d say they’re doing a great job adjusting themselves to the characters.

Yes, definitely props to the VAs. Sunny, Zipp, and Pipp all impressed me with how close they sounded to the movie ones, Pipp especially.
I think your evaluation is dead on. I have seen several episodes of Pony Life with a "give it a chance" attitude, and I think Tell Your Tale is much, much better. That may be a completely personal thing, because my tolerance for abstraction from original material is fairly low, and while Tell Your Tale bumps up against my limit, Pony Life blew way past it.
I agree the VA's did a very good job. The only thing I actively dislike about Tell Your Tale is the character design style. I could deal with the bean-mouth choice, but the bizarre legs and creepy ultra-flat faces are things I have to actively ignore when certain poses/positions are used. That too, may be a personal thing, but...

...really?
Will still keep watching, though.

The animation/art style remains, perhaps, the most contentious point among the curious and the willing - since I don't particularly have any knowledge of the aesthetic, I can only say that I hope it becomes more bearable with time.
Though I do like how they drew the crab. I liked the crab. He was the best character. He should do more.

Full agree here. I mean, all the critters looked better than the ponies, but McSnips-A-Lot outstripped the seagulls and Cloudpuff (who was a step down from his film depiction, but still agreeable).
In some parallel universe, he’s the protagonist of the show, and one must wonder what that is like.

I'll give that a third thumbs-up. Every Fluttershy needs an Angel Bunny.
