Grammar Check Fail 2 · 5:00am Mar 18th, 2022

...in what UNIVERSE would "you is" ever be proper English grammar, Microsoft Word?! :facehoof:

Sometimes we question about their lesson of sentence

Da Bronx, obviously. :trollestia:

Southern half of the US that would work.

Slang for the confuse.

Sometimes you do wind up using "you" and "is" together in a sentence. Depends on the context.

For example, "The funny thing about you is that you hate all vegetables but love broccoli."

Yeah, but this sentence was obviously not such an instance--it's literally Microsoft Word suggesting I use "you is" where a "you are" (or in this case, "you're") should really be the only option. :derpytongue2:

I know why it was suggesting it to me though. Microsoft Word--or at least this particular version of it--sometimes struggles to keep its grammar rules straight when multiple may apply to a phrase at once, particularly whenever tracking instances where a plural or singular case may be necessary. In this instance, it's identifying the wrong noun as the one the "are" is linking to, and since that noun is singular, it thinks "is" should be required instead. It's basically trying to apply the right grammar rule to the wrong sort of phrase because something in the sentence is triggering a false positive. As a result, it's not really paying attention to that "you" the "are" is paired with at all, as it incorrectly sees it as unrelated to the matter.

This is fixed if I split the sentence with a comma, which nudges the grammar check into associating the "are" with the correct noun...but then it objects to the comma, because a comma isn't actually necessary for this kind of sentence.

The whole sentence would probably benefit from just being rephrased entirely, if only for added clarity (it's otherwise correct as-is), but it's a line of spoken dialogue where it makes sense for the character in question to say it in this way, so I kinda loose out either way. :twilightoops:

Anyway, I see this problem come up all the time in the program that I often tune it out (sometimes even ignoring it if its an instance where I know what I've written is correct despite what it's claiming), and normally this would be the same case too...but this is literally the first time I've ever seen it suggest "you is" in a place where even a first grader could tell you that wouldn't be correct. :rainbowlaugh:
