Random snippet to prove I’m still alive

“I got the time off!” The familiar voice emanating from the landline handset was jubilant.

A broad grin crossed Sunset’s face. “Great! Y’know, I can’t remember the last time both our vacation times lined up.”

“Four years, seven months, and twelve days.” The dry, and dryly humorous, reply came back instantly. “But who’s counting?”

So, uh, yeah, I’m here. I guess I should have mentioned it earlier, but it slipped my mind. Better late than never, I guess.

Yes, I’m still around, though I still have nothing substantive for Fimfiction—and I’m not sure when, if ever, I will again. All I’ve got at the moment is a handful of random morsels from my tiny but active mind.

    Not naming names [writing tips]

As I’ve mentioned here and there, one of the (many) rules I generally abide by when writing for Twin Canterlots is: avoid using real-world names wherever possible. It’s harder than it seems—especially when one considers indirect coinages as well as direct references—and I don’t always succeed, but in general I find ways to skirt them most of the time. Cook’s Tour and Brass Ring are complete, or at least as complete as they need to be. The former clocks in at around seventy thousand words, the latter at about seventy-seven thousand, counting “Oops.” Print lay-outs are complete for both as well; with “The Farmer in the Dell” and a chronology appendix in Cook’s Tour and “Conference” in Brass Ring, I was able to bring both volumes to almost the same page count—just four pages difference—which is pretty amazing. (I have proof PDF files for anyone who’s interested; just give me a destination to send one or both of them to.)

Right now, the stories and anthologies that await attention, in rough order of priority, are:

  • Finishing Lectern’s New and Used Books: Fall Semester with part 2 of the O&O game
  • Starting Lectern’s New and Used Books: Spring Semester
  • Continuing The Campus
  • Starting Off Campus
  • Starting Space Opera
  • Continuing Inspired by . . .
  • Finishing “Courtesy Call”

I’ll be taking a short break from writing before taking it up again, probably measured in days or weeks.
