Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 5 · 2:20pm Dec 26th, 2021

Happy Boxing Day! Needless to say, this one was prepped in advance. I appreciate all of you, but I’m not spending Christmas Day writing a card blog. Besides, who wants last minute gifts?

This week is also part of why I skipped the comics, since a chapter of d20 Pony means I can keep the analysis to a minimum. No offense meant to Rangelost; there’s plenty to get into, but this a case where it’s better for you all to experience it yourselves… though bear in mind that the contents can get dubiously safe for work.

In this case, we have an interesting blend of D&D interlude, slice of life with some familiar faces from Canterlot, and tournament arc. Definitely some… unique combat styles on display. Especially Tonsoria, a mare who fights with a giant pair of scissors. Insert your own Clock Tower joke.

Now, time to show you what I got you all:

Lodestone Enhancement 1W
Enchantment — Aura
Enchant permanent
As long as enchanted permanent is a creature, it gets +2/+2.
As long as enchanted permanent is an Equipment, it has “Equipped creature gets +2/+2.”

Masked Fencer 2W
Creature — Pony Warrior
First strike
Ward 1 (Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, counter that spell or ability unless its controller pays 1.)
Masked Fencer has ward 1 as long as it’s attacking or blocking. (Each instance of ward triggers separately.)

Immovable Cataphract can block any number of creatures.
W: Immovable Cataphract gets +0/+1 until end of turn.

Titan’s Fall 3W
Sorcery
Destroy target creature with power 4 or greater. Put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.
A pillar of light burst from the felled monster, and the heroes felt warm sunlight for the first time in weeks.

Griffin Gladiator 5W
Creature — Griffin Warrior
Assist (Another player may pay up to 5 of this spell’s cost.)
2: Griffin Gladiator gains your choice of flying or first strike until end of turn. Any player may activate this ability.
“Let’s see if you’re worth my time.”

When Titanic Tendril enters the battlefield, tap target creature an opponent controls. That creature doesn’t untap during its controller's untap step for as long as you control Titanic Tendril.
The titans’ minions take many forms, all hostile to ponies.

Tap up to two target creatures. Venture into the dungeon. (Enter the first room or advance to the next room.)
The tunnel seemed to stretch endlessly. Only finding a seam in the spell revealed the deception and the exit.

Lake Titan 4UU
Creature — Giant
Islandwalk (This creature can’t be blocked as long as defending player controls an Island.)
Whenever Lake Titan enters the battlefield or attacks, surveil 2. (Look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest on top of your library in any order.)

A skilled flourish that provides its own scarlet ribbons.

Fellblade Executioner 4B
Creature — Unicorn Warlock
At the beginning of your end step, destroy target creature you don’t control that was dealt damage this turn.

She cuts through the competition with ease.

Solid steel and weighted foam feel far too similar in the heat of battle.

Mirror Greaves 2
Artifact — Equipment
Equipped creature has haste.
Whenever equipped creature becomes the target of a spell or ability you don’t control, copy that spell or ability. You may choose new targets for the copy.

Instructional Grimoire 3
Artifact
(2u)(2b), T: You may exile an instant or sorcery card from your hand encoded on target creature with no cards encoded on it. If that card doesn’t have cipher, it gains cipher. (Whenever that creature deals combat damage to a player, its controller may cast a copy of the encoded card without paying its mana cost.)

Phoenix Quill RW
Artifact — Equipment
Equipped creature has prowess. (Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)
Whenever equipped creature dies, you may sacrifice Phoenix Quill. If you do, return that card from its owner’s graveyard to that player’s hand.

At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may create a token that’s a copy of target Equipment, then attach it to target creature you control. Exile the token at end of combat.
One good blade deserves another.

Whenever Dispelling-Hoof Disciple blocks or becomes blocked by a creature, destroy target permanent attached to that creature.
Whenever Dispelling-Hoof Disciple deals combat damage to a player, destroy target artifact or enchantment that player controls.

Ritual of Suffering 4BR
Sorcery
Your life total becomes 1. Ritual of Suffering deals X damage to each creature, planeswalker, and opponent, where X is the life you lost this way. If this damage would reduce a player’s life total to less than 1, it reduces that life total to 1 instead.

Stupid Complicated Game Alert: Titan's Fall can't be cast without a target, and won't resolve if the target becomes illegal. However, there's nothing stopping you from targeting your own creature other than common sense and there are plenty of situations where you might want to do it anyway... like having a big indestructible thing, because the counters are completely independent from the target actually dying (subject to the caveat from the first sentence, which didn't stop being true or anything).

Inside Baseball Alert: Of course a Titan would trigger on ETB or attack; by all accounts that was a fun cycle of limited bombs. IIRC the green one got hit by the F&L list, to give you an idea of how good that combination is.

My only complaint is random encounter isn't an instant.
Other than that, favorites are fellblade executioner and the tournament.

Does the Titanic Tendril prevent a creature from being untapped by other means?

Ah. I wasn't sure if it was just a wording change I'd missed. I haven't kept up with MtG much since I had a kid.
