GREETINGS, GOTHAMITES, AUTOBOTS, DECEPTICONS, PONIES, WHOEVER YOU ARE! Mr. J himself is back once again with a second cartoon show to do episode reviews for!!! I had a refreshing day today, and I hope you guys had a great day as well. Man, I am already starting to miss doing reviews for Transformers: Animated already, and it’s only been one week. But... it’s alright. While some good things come to an end, other good things come to a full start. This series in particular being one of them. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you my personal take on the very first episode of this Disney series called The Owl House!!

This show was created by a talented individual—Dana Terrace by name—and features brilliant voice actors/actresses who gave life to these characters. Not to mention the gifted animators, script writers, and editors that made this series one of—if not the most popular and well-known modern Disney show. I have to say... I really enjoy this series. While it is currently on hiatus after the release of season 2A, I thought it would be best to do episode reviews for what we have gotten so far and let you guys know just how I feel for each of the episodes.

So, allow me to share my personal thoughts on the series premiere: “A Lying Witch and a Warden”.

First off, I find the main character to be both relatable and entertaining to watch. Her name is Luz Noceda (voiced by Sarah-Nicole Robles).

I really like her enthusiastic and optimistic personality. Her love and passion for creativity and being supportive makes my heart soft. I also like that she is actually the first bisexual main protagonist in a Disney show. Props to Dana (who is also bisexual) for doing her best effort in representing LGBTQ+ to let the community know that they are valid and are not alone. There is nothing wrong in being who you are.

In this episode, we see that she isn’t that well appreciated or liked because she is constantly invested in the fantasy world and showing off her own creativity... that somehow annoyed everyone at her school. Not even her own mother was pleased with that. Don’t you feel hurt when nobody likes what makes you being you and you feel rejected because of that? This is why you should always be around those who actually support you and love you for who you are as a person.

Suddenly, she stumbles upon a random portal that transports her to the Boiling Isles where she meets a daring criminal witch named Eda Clawthorne (voiced by Wendie Malick).

This hot lady is both sassy, sarcastic, wild, humorous, and overall entertaining. It would appear that Pacha’s wife went to a whole new level in being badass and lovable since her time in The Emperor’s New Groove. Haha!

Anyway, Luz eventually also meets a little demon figure who calls himself King (voiced by the legendary Alex Hirsch who also voices Hooty).

What’s the matter, Bill Cipher? Can’t do anything? Too bad! Because you’re gonna be cuddled and hugged by Luz the human throughout the rest of the show!

In order to get back home, Luz must help them complete a mission which of course created trouble for them as Warden Wrath chases after them for a period of time.

However, by the time all the shenanigans was done and over with and Luz had the opportunity to get back home, she refuses to leave them and begs Eda to become her apprentice in order to learn how to be a witch. You can tell that she honestly did not want to go back home because she felt that she wasn’t appreciated there and had no friends there. But with Eda and King, she felt more at home and would feel even more at home as the season goes by.

In this first episode, we have an idea who Luz is, where she’s from, and why we should care for her as the main character and why we should sympathize with her. We have a clear idea who the other main characters are and see who they are through their personality and dialogue. Dana and the others showed clearly that they were about to have the absolute fun of their lives by making this wonderful show as demonstrated in this episode.

While the voice acting and animation are just perfect, the pacing felt like it was going a little too fast. Regardless, the plot was solid as well as the quality writing of the beginning of the story. Well done, Dana Terrace!

Overall, I enjoyed this episode which warrants an A- grade! For those of you who are interested in giving this show a watch for the first time, give it a chance and see it all in chronological order to get the story so far.

Peace!

Hmm. I am intrigued.

As someone with Latin American ancestry, I really apreciate Luz. Her character isn´t stereotypical nor sexualized and doesn´t have a temper, like lots of latina characters are. Good job Dana!

I like how she´s POC, bisexual and neurodivergent. She´s the proof that a character whose minorities overlap isn´t forced, that´s a harmful idea that limits good representation. All you have to do is not centering that character on their ethnicity, sexuality, etc and give them an active role in an interesting story and make them human!

Don’t you feel hurt when nobody likes what makes you being you and you feel rejected because of that?

Yes. I was practically went through what Luz did in school. Luckily, my family accepted me the way I was.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the 1st episode of season 1. I look forward to reading your reviews of other episodes in the future.

Heh..... I remember back during the stretch before the first half of Season 2 of The Owl House began, I would make it my mission to watch all of Season 1 so that I would know The Owl House story thus far before Season 2 began. X3

And I did it during June 2021 and I was able to finish it before Season 2 began within a matter of days! :D
