Hero peered down the sights of his rifle, watching the muddy fields. Pharynx and Fortuna were right beside him.

“See anything?” Fortuna asked.

“Nah. At best, probably a crow or something.” Hero sighed and fired at a flock of flying crows, missing.

“Damn, you execute a bug and still can’t aim?” Pharynx raised up and fired, but he too missed.

Fortuna rolled her eyes. “Boys, calm down.” She raised up, her head poking ever so slightly out of the trench. She pulled out her revolver and fired, knocking a bird out.

But just as soon as the bird hit the ground, a loud pop rang out and Fortuna’s head exploded in a shower of gore. The two boys squeaked and ducked down.

“Fortuna!!” Pharynx cried. Pharynx tried to raise up and fire, but Hero pulled him down.

“Phar! Calm down! She’s gone!”

Pharynx stared at the body, his heart racing. It all happened so fast.

Melody sat in a tree, scanning the changeling trench. If any charges were to happen, she’d be the first to shoot. However, her attention was drawn elsewhere. A muzzle flash drew her to right side of the trench. She looked through her scope. Another flash.

“Come on you dumb bug… poke your head over that trench…”

Just then, a head raised up slightly, a revolver aiming upwards. Melody zeroed in. Just as the muzzle flashed, she squeezed the trigger.

Pop!
