Mr. Freeze · 2:39am Oct 8th, 2021

Good evening, everyone! This is Mr. J!

Tonight, I really want to share with you guys how I feel about one of DC’s most iconic villains of all time: Mr. Freeze. For those of you who are unfamiliar with him, he is one of Batman’s most formidable villains in Gotham City and one of the most notorious criminals from Batman’s Rogue Gallery. His real name is Victor Fries when he was but a regular man. To be honest, he is one of my favorite DC villains of all time and one of my favorite Batman characters in general. What I love about Freeze is not just his ice cold powers but also his cold, calculated personality and badass design. In case you’re wondering, I’m talking about this version of the namesake from The Batman (2004).

Why? Because that show was the one that introduced me to Mr. Freeze. Everything about this version looks more appealing to me because this is probably the only version that didn’t commit his crimes simply because of his wife Nora. Here, he seeks to rule over Gotham City as his frozen empire and thereby become the emperor of Gotham. Most versions of the character have a tragic element to their backstory which specifically shows Freeze stealing money and resources so that he could find a cure for Nora who was cryogenically frozen to preserve her body.

Now, I understand why most fans are drawn to that version of Freeze from Batman: The Animated Series because it added depth to the character and gave him a reason why he was a criminal and how he became a super-villain. Don’t get me wrong. I like that version of the character too; it’s part of the reason why I enjoyed watching Batman and Mr. Freeze: Subzero.

However, my issue is that he is become the mainstream version of the character to the point where almost every iteration of the villain shows him as sympathetic, not actually evil, etc. It just gets overused and boring for a while. That’s why the 2004 animated version feels so unique and fresh to me because it’s unlike most Batman shows where Freeze is an anti-villain instead of being an actual villain. It’s kinda similar to what Transformers: Animated did with Megatron in contrast to the backstory Megatron got in Transformers: Prime.

My point is that not every villain is supposed to be sympathetic or tragic. My favorite type of villains are those who are evil just because. True, a backstory is a good thing, but they also need an entertaining personality and demeanor that suits their character as well as proper motivations. Remember, some men can’t be reasoned or negotiated with; some men just want to watch the world burn... or freeze in this case.

That is why the 2004 version of Mr. Freeze is my favorite incarnation of the character of all time. Plus, I love the fact that he was voiced by Clancy Brown, one of my favorite voice actors.

Did you know that this version is actually faithful to the original version from the comics? He first appeared in 1959 in Batman issue #121 (created by artist Sheldon Moldoff and writer Dave Wood) where he was originally called Mr. Zero, a petty thief who had ice-based abilities. He was eventually renamed Mr. Freeze. His original story was revamped years later to match the one written by writer Paul Dini for Batman: The Animated Series to become the villain most Batman fans all know and love. For me, Clancy Brown’s portrayal of Freeze will always be number 1. It sucks that he didn’t have that many appearances in the show.

So those are my thoughts on Mr. Freeze. Maybe when December comes around, I might make a crossover G5 MLP story featuring him. Just an idea I thought of.

May you all have an ice evening.

Mr. Freeze, one of my favorite Batman villains too. Although he's a villain, he has a purpose, in most incarnations at least. He cryogenically froze his gravely ill wife hoping to keep her alive until he could find a cure. Finding that cure was his top priority, he didn't care what he had to do or who he had to kill in order to save his wife. He'll go up against foes he knows outmatch him if he thinks beating them will help him cure his wife. In Injustice 2, he even seems willing to fight Brainiac in order to save his wife, and Brainiac is one of the most powerful villains in DC history

Of course. By the way, have you ever watched this show (The Batman)?

5592985
No, I haven't. I don't remember what the actor's name was, but my dad doesn't like the version of Joker who robbed a bank only to burn all the stolen money. I feel that version of Joker is one of the best, Joker doesn't care about money or power, he wants to prove a point, that everyone has a breaking point, that there's evil deep inside of everyone, and that all it takes for them to snap is having one bad day. 'One bad day' is the closest thing to a catchphrase that Joker has IMO

Bro, first you make a compelling argument about this version of Mr. Freeze. And second, bad ice joke, dude.

You’re referring to Heath Ledger’s version? He played him in The Dark Knight.

Also, give this show a watch someday. It’s my favorite Batman show of all time. You won’t regret it. :raritywink:

5592990
Yeah, that's him. And thanks, I might watch it

5592988
Bruh, learn how to take a joke. 🙄

5592992
I know how to take joke. I just prefer a little originality.

5592993
Well, they made that joke in Injustice 2, Mr. Freeze has said, "I will freeze the world to save Nora"

5592993
Not everyone has the same sense of humor that you have. You could have just simply ignored it and not make a fuss over it.

5592995
Imagine saying that to the actual Joker XD

5592995
Yep. But seriously, you do make logical argument about this version.

5592996
Lmao, he would waste my ass for saying that. 😂
Kinda ironic, huh?

5592997
Thanks. This version is underrated.

All the same, a nice break from the usual story of Mr. Freeze. Less emotional, too.

Aquaman is also underrated, people often compare him to Hawkeye, not as far as their characters go, just their popularity. Out of the Avengers, most people wouldn't have a lot of good things to say about Hawkeye, but at least Aquaman got his own movie.

5593003
I prefer Aquaman over Hawkeye honestly. Never really cared much for the latter.

Uh, the video is unavailable.

5593009
Crap, it probably should be only watched on the platform. No matter. Your point still stands.

And since I just looked up which came first, Green Arrow originated in the 50's, Hawkeye didn't arrive until at least ten years later, so Hawkeye is a ripoff of Green Arrow
