Another story completed? · 6:09am Oct 1st, 2021
So my bio currently reads “Simultaneously able to type 94 wpm and still take four years to finish a story.” Well, I’ve done one better.
I had the original idea for A Week in the Rainbow Factory seven years ago.
Couple more thoughts below the break.
It’s not my usual fare, and that might be why I never completed it until now. Still, the Rainbow Factory has a special place in my heart. If the author’s notes from the original gdoc are right, it was the first pony fansong I heard, the first PMV I saw, and the first grimdark story I read. It’s one of those stories where it’s not just the story, but the fridge logic that really gets you. That might be why it’s so effective.
Anyway, seven years ago, I was listening to this remix, and a little scene came to mind towards the end of the song where a worker (for some reason, they were all humanized ponies) held a key in her right hand, as if about to release the little boy bolted down, and then she smiled and hit the button to send him down the line with her left hand, letting the key she held in her right drag over his body; his release so close he could almost touch it, but so far away at the same time. That scene eventually became this story.
I also remember choosing Raindrops as the Factory Pony because of a different story I read before starting. It wasn’t a grimdark story at all, but it definitely left me feeling weirded out. Not sure how this characterization is any better, but hey.
If you click just one link on this page, this song is still my favorite Rainbow Factory-related song.
And maybe if there’s another contest for the 15 or 20 year anniversary, I’ll get something done for that, too.
I got a long fic that’s taking me too long too.
I'm proud of you; at least one of us got something done.
