After the restoration of magic, Sunny Starscout gets funded to develop and produce a TV adaptation of the ancient Equestrian myths her father told her.
The result is MLP:FiM as we know it.
The historical record is extremely sparse, even after Argyle spent a lifetime researching it. Fortunately, the goal is not a documentary, but just entertaining historical fiction, so Sunny is free to fill in the blanks with fresh creative imagination of her own. For example, very little is known about the real Guardian of Laughter, apart from being an earth pony. Sunny models a personality for her on her friend Izzy Moonbow.
Whereas Argyle was a scholar, Sunny is an activist at heart, and she's not above sacrificing the literal plausibility of plot elements in order to get her friendship message to come through more clearly.
"We need a way to show the earth pony and pegasus viewers how soul-crushing it was to grow up in apathy-era Bridlewood."
"Hmm, Bridlewood itself is much later than the period we're portraying. We'll have to make up something to use as an analogy. How does 'rock farming' sound to you?"
Seriously, this would explain a lot -- potentially everything.
Unfortunately, with the glacial speed my writing muscles work at, it's pretty much certain I'll never get to write this. So I suppose it's up for grabs.
