Meet The Mares: Rainbow Flash · 1:15am Sep 27th, 2021

There’s only so much that can go into a story, especially one with as many characters as 16 has. So I’m opening the floor to asking these characters questions. Post your reply with any questions you have and Rainbow Flash will be happy to answer them (I’ll be editing this blog to add those questions). Snowcatcher's will be posted on Wednesday, along with part 2 of her chapter.

Interview subject #12: Rainbow Flash

Cutie mark? Author’s note: I can’t locate a vector of this character’s cutie mark. The below is the best I’ve come across. Can anyone assist with this? Starbeam Twinkle also needs her cutie mark vectorized.

Thanks to Feathermay, I discovered that pony names don’t translate to English quite as well as everyone originally thought. What’s the most direct translation of your name?

She Who Is As Flashy As The Rainbows.

There’s no easy way to bring this up, but I understand you had polio. What was that like?

Awful. Prior to polio, I was an athlete. I had goals and dreams. I was going to be a gold medalist in all of the track and field events in the Equestria Games. To put that in perspective for your readers, that’s our equivalent of the Olympics. I was just a filly yet I was routinely outrunning adults. I’ll never know how fast I could’ve gone. These days I’m thankful just to be able to walk. I had to learn how to walk all over again, and I still limp a bit.

It was a dark period of my life. There were times I wanted to curl up and die. All I would’ve needed to do was get out of my iron lung. The irony is I couldn’t have done so because I was too weak to. The iron lung kept me alive in more ways than one.

I rebounded. I reinvented myself. I’m stronger mentally than I ever could’ve hoped to be had I stayed on my chosen path. It still stings though.

You were on the very first busload of ponies brought to the consulate the day the portal opened. Is that correct?

That I was, darling. With visions of clothing your whole species. I’ve always been ambitious, and if I can’t win a medal in the Equestria Games, I need another lofty goal for myself. I haven’t gotten off the ground just yet, but I’ve made clothes for some of our guests. If they’re willing to stand still, I’m willing to create. Practice makes perfect – humans move in different ways and bend in different places.

Relationship status?

I’m in a long-term relation with my fillyhood friend, Sweetie Blue. It’s rough being away from her, but we’ll be reunited again someday soon. Either here on Earth if my fashion empire takes off, or back home in Equestria if her bakery is successful.

Favorite part of living on Earth?

Unlike ponies, your species rarely goes around naked. The market is there, I just need to tap into it.

What’s your favorite song? Specifically, your favorite song that our audience on Earth might know?

Vangelis’ Chariots Of Fire.

Favorite TV show?

Celebrity gossip is useful since celebrities are usually at the forefront of fashion trends, so I watch a lot of the shows on E!

Favorite movie?

Terry.

Favorite color?

All of them! Even black and white need not be boring.

Do you have a car?

I have a 2011 Ford Mustang convertible. It’s fast and when I put the top down the wind really gives me the sensation of speed that I miss. It’s not the same as galloping flat out, but there’s nothing that can perk me up faster on a bad day than getting out on the highway, dropping the top, and flooring it.

What do you miss about Equestria?

Aside from my friends and family, I miss the friendliness of everypony. In Equestria, you can trot up to a stranger and have a conversation. On Earth, you may get a conversation, or you might get yelled at. Not everyone likes little ponies.

Emil: What was the favorite food/drink that you discovered on human-Earth?

Ultra SlimFast, darling. I used to burn calories faster than I could take them in. Now I don’t, and I have to keep my mareish figure.

Dan: I understand you can't work out as intensively as you used to, but do you have any favorite workout tracks besides Vangelis?

I like to take a daily trot in the mornings. Some days are easier than others, of course. But that was the case even when running was my life. Some days I didn’t want to get out of my nice comfy bed to go for a run. These days, it’s easier to motivate myself to trot. I have a workout outfit that I made myself, and several workout mixes depending on my mood. Most days it’s electronic, disco, and some trance, but there are days I break out the classic rock. The days when it’s really hard to get going, it has to be classic rock. All good training montages in movies have classic rock soundtracks, after all. Survivor, Journey, etc. Don’t stop believing, indeed.

Dan: And can I have a chaste hug?

I don’t see why not. Hugs are great! Would you like a nuzzle too? And if it’s not too much trouble, maybe a little scratch behind my ears?

SportsCall: Have you ever considered working with or competing in the Special Olympics or even the Paralympics?

I’d like to volunteer. Competing would be difficult, not from a physical standpoint, but from a competition standpoint. Unless there were other ponies in the running, I’d have a big advantage, depending on the event. I’m doing a lot better than I used to. Most ponies don’t even notice the limp.

But I would love to donate some time to the Paralympics. We don’t have anything like it in Equestria, and maybe I can bring them there. That’s something for me to explore in the future. If there was a Pony Paralympics, I’d compete in a heartbeat. If I can’t win a gold medal, I want to set a record.*

*We’ll be something like this at some point in the future. I’m unsure if it will be part of her chapter in Act II, or if it’ll be a side story (that will depend on length, though I’m leaning toward the latter). She’s going to get a happy ending for all the pain and suffering I put the poor darling through.

Snowliasion: As ever, favorite colleague my dear ambitious magus?

Daisy Dreams. Even though she’s retired, and apparently absolutely hated her modeling career, she’s agreed to model for me when I’m ready to launch my fashion line. She said that her coming out of retirement to model will draw even more attention than if she’d never quit in the first place.

Spamotron: Do you know how far along adapting human vaccine methods to ponies is? Seems like something you would keep an ear on.

Medical technology has been trickling through the portal even longer than most of the population knew there was another world out there. Vaccines were one of the few exceptions, since that would have meant revealing Equestria’s existence to the drug companies. As such, pony adaptations of existing vaccines are still in the testing phase. As you can imagine, I’m very anxious to see them available. It’s too late to help me, but I wouldn’t wish what I went through on anypony. The sooner these are available, the better it will be for everypony!

penguincascadia: What do you think about New York City's fashion industry?

It’s very similar to Manehattan’s. I’m still practicing with human fashions, but from what I can tell the fashion industry is just as cutthroat on Earth as it is back home. I love strolling through the shops, looking at all the newest designs and trends.

penguincascadia: Are you a supporter of worker rights and unionization efforts in the fashion industry?

Unions are a foreign concept. Back in Equestria, we don’t need unions to fight for us just to get the basics like a living wage or health insurance. We have princesses that ensure their ponies are taken care of. Let’s just say that if I’d gotten sick here, I’d be bankrupt.

Hmmm... where to begin?
I understand you can't work out as intensively as you used to, but do you have any favorite work out tracks besides Vangelis? I'm most partial to Jeanette Biedermann's Run with Me and Trevor Jones' extended adaptation of the traditional The Gael (the 8 minute version. Not the 6 minute version lazily looped and uploaded) and the remix blending Yuzo Koshiro's My Lover with Tokio Hotel's Monsoon.

And can I have a chaste hug?
