    I'm still here

At home, have not been out today, and no plans of going out.

Just feel it's worth mentioning since I'm seeing things on the news about a shooting being filmed in an area in pretty easy walking distance of me...

    Internet

Just thought I'd mention my internet went down 12/13 hours ago, and is still down. Sort of have cellular internet, but a very bad connection...

Have the 4th off as a holiday day, at least, and went and scheduled the day afterwards off, just in case I need it for getting my internet back up and running.

Yay, hard drive problems · 5:49am Sep 15th, 2021

My blogs are always about computer problems, aren't they?

The computer most of them have been about is fine. I've got several computers, though. The one that had all the motherboard issues was the main desktop.

The other personal computer I use a lot is a laptop. It's a thinkpad that has in it not only a 240 GB SSD, but a 1 TB hard drive and a 500 GB hard drive.

If this seems odd, I'm dual booting. The SSD has arch linux on it, the 1 TB hard drive is the home directory for linux, and the 500 GB one has Windows 10 on it.

Except, well... last week, I had the laptop sitting on a counter, and knocked it off accidentally. It fell screen first! I was terribly surprised the screen didn't get damaged, actually.

I thought everything was fine, but it started freezing up for a minute or so, periodically. Only in Linux, too, but I mostly use it in Linux.

Checking dmesg showed a bunch of disk errors. Tried fixing them, but I think the fall damaged it. I set my laptop to copy a whole bunch of stuff off that directory, and it kept periodically getting write errors on this file and that, though a lot copied. I was going to copy more, but today, the computer was hung when I tried to wake it up, gave errors even detecting that hard drive on bootup, and I had to yank the drive out, and tell linux that /home is now on the ssd to get it to boot up.

Oh well, new 1 TB hard drive is on the way and should be delivered tomorrow, and then I'll set up a new home directory on that. I got a fair amount of my download folder and desktop off of there. Probably lost stuff, but a lot of the important stuff would be on my local server or main computer, which are fine...

Funny thing is that I actually got the laptop running cooler during all this, because I removed the heatsink, wiped off all the goop underneath, and applied new thermal paste.

Well that's unfortunate, hope it gets solved quick.

Well, I'll probably have things mostly in working order within the next few days, but I'll probably have lost files. Hopefully nothing important.

Assuming the hard drive I have being delivered gets here tomorrow and works, I'll drop it in, and try to see if I can coax the old hard drive to cough up any more files.

I am feeling kinda smart about having the os on an ssd and the home file on the hard drive, though, because I'd probably be totally reinstalling linux if I hadn't...
