Star Trek Phoenix Fan Art! · 9:10pm Sep 14th, 2021

Some of you may have seen this already, as it has been floating around Twitter and Derpibooru, but Grand Moff Pony commissioned a piece of fanart for Star Trek Phoenix! It is specifically dated as during the events of episode 6 of season 1: Sunset has switched over to the Generations uniform, but the actual events of Generations has yet to take place.

This was drawn by the magnificent AmiShy whom you can see the Twitter of here and the DA account of here.

Thank you both to Grand Moff and Amishy for this beautiful work of art. It touches my heart in ways I cannot even describe.

Omgosh she's beautiful!

Very nice pic, but I did not recognize Sunset at first. Fur color is a little pale, in my opinion. Then again, I don't always trust my eyes...

Nice pic. Yet, I don't see her wings.

Let's see this "better than coffee"

And the mug says "Enterprise", so it seems this is set before her little incident.

5582057
All lighting in the scene is artificial; either photon discharge from the nacelles, or from her desktop screen...

Without a secondary lighting source strong enough, reflections from the ambient will wash out. Turn off all your lights while watching a laptop computer screen. Your normal color will also wash out as well...

It's actually well thought out.

Well played, sir!

I like this more than the published picture, even though no Twilight in it. It looks...real...

dang that is grate art work.

5582058
5582067
Correct. This is before she gets her wings. Notice also she only has two pips, and she's wearing the Voyager/Generations style uniform. It's hard to tell because the colors are washed out due to the low lighting, but she's Lieutenant Shimmer here, not quite yet first officer of the Phoenix.
5582083
It is! I admit I fell for the color trap for the first few seconds I observed it too, till I realized the low lighting. And then everything became clear.

There's so many little details about this that I love as well.

5582057
HeavyHauler said it best in his response. Her room is intentionally dark other than the monitor light and the ambient light from the nacelle outside the window. So it kinda washes things out a bit. :)

5582086
Well, she does make a small cameo at least. Check the framed picture on the desk. :)

This is an awesome picture. I love the view outside the window of the starboard nacelle, the LCARS panel, the PADD, the coffee mug, the books on the shelf, the picture, the plants, the box with her cutie mark, even the com badge on the desk. There's only one mistake: Sunset's rank insignia are on the wrong side. Rank insignia for all personnel below command ranks (admirals) are worn on the right side of the neck, with the com badge on the left breast. Beyond this nitpick, great picture.

5582083
Okay, I can believe that. Sometimes it's hard for me to see.

I still think it's excellent.

Okay, one more comment- where IS her quarters? By the perspective of the nacelle outside the window, it looks like her quarters are in the stardrive section, almost exactly between the nacelles. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

5582126
That's precisely where her quarters were on the Enterprise while she was a Lieutenant.

“I’m hoping it means I’m not the only one who’s been promoted,” I replied as I carried my stuff out the door. We swiftly made our way to the turbolift. “Deck 32, section 12.”

“Ah hope so.” Smith blew a sigh out through her teeth. “Ah’ve been workin’ real hard to make up for things since mah last evaluation. Ah’d like to think Ah’ve earned JG at this point.”

“You have in my book,” I said as the turbolift dumped us out. It took me a moment to locate my new quarters, but then I spotted it, with my name and rank etched into the door. As I stepped inside, I took a moment to examine the place. It was a little larger than the quarters I’d shared with Smith, with a desk tucked away in a nook like a small office instead of shoved against one wall. The living area had more room, with a large couch, and the bedroom featured a larger, comfy looking bed as well. There was also a single window looking out into space. From my low down posture I could clearly see the port-side warp nacelle.

This picture matched up perfectly.

5582126
You're not wrong...she's in the 'neck', starboard side...

5582132
Dewdrops...that's starboard...

5582103
You ain't lying...the choices of 'real' books, family photograph, (though it's hard to distinguish the human/humanoids; had to go with hair color), the lighting...

One little issue...that's not port side...

5582147
...the picture is flipped! Yes, that's it.

Or I can go and fix the passage.

5582122
Good catch. I missed that.

5582148
Unfortunately, it doesn't change the collar rank, though it does kill all the other stuff...if the artist would be willing, depending on layers, the rank could be on the desk, and the combadge in its normal place on the uniform. Or, wipe the rank from the collar and put it on the desk as well...

Don't change the deck/section numbers. They're already set to starboard...0 is bow straight forward, 9 is straight starboard, 18 is straight aft, 27 is straight port...so starboard 120° from straight ahead is her cabin compartment...

5582154
No when I say fix the passage, I mean I would just change "port-side nacelle" to "starboard-side nacelle" and leave it otherwise untouched.

5582154
Sorry I'm late to this. But the combadge/pip location issue was something I realized early on in the sketch phase. Either way we flipped the image one of the two would not be visible, and I did not want to reorient the entire canvas to redo her pose either. (meaning the pose she's generally in is what I initially imagined when detailing it out to the artist)

So knowing all that, I decided to compromise a bit and keep the pips visible but put the combadge on the desk. That way they'd at least be visible in some way. I know I looked up uniform references when planning this out. But if I messed it up anyway and put the pips on the wrong side, that's on me. The artist was only following my write-up, so I'll take the L.

5582158
It's just Trekker nitpicking. When I was in the military, (Army) we wore ranks on both collar wings. I figured Starfleet would do the same thing, but it probably looked too busy for filming...

Then came admirals...

US Navy enlisted wear their 'rates' (ranks) on the left sleeve, so there's that example...

Omg lol. I saw this on twitter last night but didn't read it was for this amazing fic. I left a commentbon it saying it would fit in well with this fic.

Wow! This puts my own feeble attempt at fan art to shame! Fantastic work!

[RE: I got a brain bug one evening at the office, and doodled up two “book cover” style pieces, one for each season. Definitely in sketch draft form, and definitely done by someone who has never been blessed in this form of artwork (i.e. drawing/cartooning)! It was my intention to do them justice as a composition in photoshop, but I haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe I should just suck it up and post it? :twilightblush:]

5582183
I will admit I'm eager to see them, quite eager, but I would rather you do them the justice you feel they need. No reason to rush; only post when you are ready for them to be viewed.

Nice! I just stumbled across the blogs about the story. I wish the story had been tagged in as I am sure plenty of people following the story would have loved to see it.

5582345
The story has been tagged all along. But bookshelf settings will sometimes make it so you don't see blog entries on stories even if the story is tagged.

5582363
I cannot wait until the hiatus is over. Hope you're doing well, mellonin.
