    Birthday Cake Will Be Served

Meant to post this earlier today, but today marked another trip around the sun for me.

    Good: I'm still here. :pinkiehappy:
Meh: I'm nearly 40 now. :fluttershbad:

Hope y'all are doing well. Hug each other, and tell someone you love them.

    *hugs all of you*

    EFNW Wrap-Up

Post-Con wrap up, post-con wrap up... :moustache:

Ladies and Gentlemen, we did it! 2020 was a total bust and 2021's doing its damn best to stage a repeat performance, but EFNW 2021 is officially in the books! Some top line stats:

Attendance: 1676 officially. (2019 had a count of ~1800, so this isn't bad at all given the circumstances, and being the first in-person con since covid)

EFNW Wrap-Up · 9:37pm August 17th

Post-Con wrap up, post-con wrap up... :moustache:

Ladies and Gentlemen, we did it! 2020 was a total bust and 2021's doing its damn best to stage a repeat performance, but EFNW 2021 is officially in the books! Some top line stats:

Attendance: 1676 officially. (2019 had a count of ~1800, so this isn't bad at all given the circumstances, and being the first in-person con since covid)
Charity Auction: $30k+ raised for the Washington state Autism Alliance! :yay: (this is the 2nd highest auction total in efnw history)

The new con hotel/venue was really nice imo, despite being much further away from the airport. The new "Writing Panel" room alone was worth it, as we got a real auditorium room to use! With stadium seating, power plugs everywhere, and full A/V capabilities! WAY easier to use! The panels all went over well, audiences were engaged and having fun, and Iron Author drew 30+ entries once again!

Especially after everything this past year, being able to see old friends and meet new ones was an almost cathartic experience. I know I wasn't able to chat with everyone I wanted to, but it was great to see/hear from Horizon, Bad Horse, Admiral Biscuit, FanofMostEverything, Rescue, Winston, Vivid Syntax, and so many others. And big props to Xepher for once again steering the ship through another successful con!

Now to close, something con-related but also very meaningful and important.

2020 was a rough year for everyone. It definitely was for me, with a 6-month work furlough sandwiched by my in-laws getting covid, general chaos in the world, and some tight finances. The fact that I knew so many people who were 20x worse off than we were though made the stress/guilt all the worse. Some days it felt like survivor's guilt to some degree. 2021 rolls around and I find out that the dementia issues we knew were coming are finally taking a significant toll on my mom - and as a result, my dad is beginning preparation to move themselves up to WA, and specifically into a 'senior living' setup that allows them to switch into progressively assisted levels of care as the need arises. This means they'll be selling their home, etc etc. As I blogged about this previously, I'll spare you a full re-telling. But needless to say, while we'll be glad to have family closer (esp. if they need help in an emergent situation), knowing my mom has to go through what she and her sisters had to watch their mother go through is painful AF.

On top of that, my wife and I will both hit 40 in a year or less. Reaching that milemarker while watching my parents begin to (in a sense) wind down their livelihood, is weighing on me like a sack of bricks. More than a few nightmares swirl through the mind lately, to be honest.

But at EFNW last weekend, my soul really did get a blast of fresh air. A burst of sunlight. Seeing so many good friends, shopping vendors, attending panels... it was amazing. Seeing at least 1/3rd the crowd was both NEW to EFNW *and* at their first ever MLP con was awesome. I honestly think G5 will indeed give this fandom a shot in the arm and a lot of new faces to befriend.

The true highlight though, is this adorable Rose plush.

This amazing plush was a completely unexpected gift from Olden Bronie, who is a good friend and one of my earliest followers. It turns out that Olden commissioned this from fellow author Winston, who in addition to his amazing writing has also taken up plush making.

I ran into the both of them at Monochromatic's table in the vendor hall, and Olden took the opportunity to surprise me with the plush! When asked why he went to all that trouble and expense, he said he just wanted to do something nice for a friend who's been having a rough time.

To say I was blown away by such a lovely gift made me just a bit emotional. I won't lie here - when I brought the plush back to my room for safekeeping, I just sat there with it and got just a bit weepy. But it was all happy tears, trust me.

I'm looking at the plush right now and it just makes me smile so much. To know that two friends, two of my oldest followers on here, came together to make something like that happen... it melts my heart in the best possible way. :pinkiesad2::heart:

I have 555 followers. 555 people who liked my work enough to click that button and hang around. I know not all of them are here all the time, but gosh darn I wouldn't still be here without your readership, comments, and support. I'll probably never meet most of you, but please accept all my thanks and all my internet hugs.

Thanks again, Olden, Winston. I don't deserve folks like you in my life, but thanks for being there all the same.

It was great seeing you again. I am sorry we didn't have time to hang out more. Perhaps next year we will have to grab a beer together and BS some.

Awwwww what a nice gift. And I'm glad you had a great time. I did too!

This was indeed a great success of a con. Glad to hear you had such a good time.

I'm glad you like your gift. Great seeing you and I had a fun time hanging out at EFNW, as always. Already looking forward to next year! Or maybe we can meet up again earlier than that at some point, if the public health situation at some point is such that it would be a good idea.

Enjoyed the conversation during the fire drill, GMP. Hopefully next year we’ll have time for that drink, too. Take care and remember, we’re here for you.
