Addict - Song Review · 10:39pm Aug 13th, 2021
Today, I'm doing a new series that everyone might like: Song Review
Ever wanted to see how your favorite song holds up? Well, look no further than this series. In this one, I get to type a review of whatever song is chosen by either myself or others, including you.
Remember the new rules:
First, if you haven't seen, read, played, or heard of any of these songs and/or the media that they appear in, there will be spoilers. You have been warned. Also, keep in mind that I haven't seen, heard of, and/or known a lot about every song out there, so if you have a song that you want to show me and I haven't known about him or her yet, please be sure to lend me some information through either reply or via PM.
Second, This is all just my personal opinion and you don't have to agree with me if you don't want to. Just please be nice, constructive, and considerate, especially when telling me why you disagree in the comments down below or via PM.
And finally, any great song counts, even fan-made or original songs.
Anyway, let's start this series with one of my favorite songs of all time: ADDICT from Hazbin Hotel
While I haven't seen much of Helluva Boss and still waiting for more Hazbin Hotel, this song has always gotten my spirits up in a strange way when it comes to my waiting. This song is an absolute bop and I can't wait to tell you all why:
Story Overview: Let's start with the story that this song tries to tell. It features one of the main characters of Hazbin Hotel, Angel Dust, along with his best friend, Cherri Bomb, singing about the fact that since they're in hell, they have enough freedom to commit whatever sin they want without consequences. But it also tells a more tragic side to Angel Dust about his horrible, toxic, and abusive relationship with his boss, Valentino, and how he uses stimulant to temporarily heal his pain despite it being the exact thing that caused it and his death in the first place. He also, deep down, wishes that the Hotel could help him with his pain despite him pretending that he doesn't need it in order to avoid pity.
It might also talk about Cherri's own tragic past about how she lost either a partner or friend through some unknown cause, whether through the extermination or when she was alive.
I personally think this is a very simple, yet deep story for a song to tell. It delves into a certain character or two and develops them from what they were when we first saw them.
- Melody: The melody is a very well-composed one. It has this cool, reverb vibe to it and fits the scenario it's trying to tell. It also sounds like a frantic party is going on and everyone is having the time of their lives, in a more chaotic fashion. It also has a very sad and depressing undertone to it that foreshadows the reprise. Speaking of the reprise, this part of the song has a very slow, piano sound that's coupled with Angel Dust's autotuned singing.
- Lyrics: The lyrics are so well-written, especially in the French version (Sorry for not bringing this up, but it does have a French version with completely different and even sadder lyrics for the reprise). It talks about the fact that they might as well party while they're in hell and how traumatic substance abuse and actual abuse can be to a person in a depressing way, especially in the French version.
- Emotion(s): The emotions are both very simple and complex at the same time. Exuberant and flamboyant with a hint of sadness and depression.
- Theme(s) The themes are the same as the story overview.
- Message(s): The message is also the same as the story overview.
- Overall: This song is a fun, party, EDM masterpiece with a touch of heartbreaking and sad undertones and I can't believe that, despite the source material, it went over my head before I knew about it.
What do you guys think? Do you agree or disagree? What favorite songs do you want me to review and why? Let me know in either the comments or via PM. Thank you and have a great day.
